Labor Day Weekend Fishing Forecast

Happy Friday,

Here we go, the last weekend of the month.  Looks like the weather will cooperate with our fishing fortunes.  Cool mornings, warmer afternoons.  Fishing may pick up a bit.  Water temperatures are cooling a bit, now ranging from 76 degrees at Smithville Lake up to 83 at the Lake of the Ozarks.  Most of the reports are for fair to slow fishing but some late reports had some species of bass hitting early and late in the day.  I've had these pictures in my possesion for a couple of weeks but this is a good weekend to share them, This is my neighbor Aaron Todd  with a whopper of a Largemouth Bass.  He caught it at a farm pond up in northern Missouri.

We were using powerbaits and topwater lures.  I was using something called a motochug, it has unbelieveable action and man when I tossed that in the water, "WHAM!"  Here is what I caught,

Good luck this weekend !  Have a Happy & safe Labor Day Holiday.

Brett

The bass are biting very good on topwater lures. If I were going to recommend the BEST topwater lure out there, it would have to be the Rage Tail Shad by Strike King. This lure has had amazing results all Summer, and just a few weeks ago, I caught my biggest bass ever on it, 13.2 pounds at the resivior where I live.

This lure works so well that it makes me not want to fish when I run out of them becuase you dont catch as many quality fish with other stuff. The Rage Tail Shad is a soft plastic topwater bait, that gives the appearence of a dying or injured fish, as it has the unique side to side motion that is heavily over exhaggerated. If you are planning on fishing a while with this lure, plan on bringing a bunch as the fish will tear them up in no time. They get worn out pretty quick, but still manage to keep their motion.

There are two things I would say bug me about the Rage Tail Shad, and it is the quick wearing out (you will have to keep reajusting the hook).

And and when a fish bites you are tempted to set the hook quickly....NO....wait a few seconds, and then set the hook hard and fast or you will likely miss it.

Beware, you will have withdraw when you run out, so be sure to stock up.

I have used that lure before and have had some luck. My favorite topwater would have to be the good ole' buzzbait. The bass just explode on them! Some of the buzzbaits are rather expensive, and I do buy some of those, but the majority of my buzzbaits are the $1 ones at wal-mart. They catch just as many as the 6 dollar ones.
