Here's a good piece of trivia that might win you a wager or two at the bar or your next family gathering: what's the most-rented DVD of all time, according to Netflix?
You might guess Pirates of the Caribbean, Spider-Man or any of the three Lord of the Rings movies. They're all huge in terms of DVD sales, along with the original Star Wars trilogy. But none of those even made the top ten among renters.
Instead, it's the 2005 Oscar-winning best picture Crash that takes top honors, and it does so across the board. In Netflix's survey of ten of the nation's biggest cities, Crash is number one on every list. Hotel Rwanda, Walk the Line, and Mr. and Mrs. Smith finished high on every city's list, too.
So why is Crash popular to rent, but not popular enough to buy? You tell me.
