Deep Freeze

Tonight will be the coldest night of the season in many locations.  Temperatures are already in the single digits in a few spots.  With winds gradually easing up tonight and skies clearing the temperatures will fall into the single digits above and BELOW zero across the viewing area.  The best chance of dropping below zero tonight would be from around Lawrence to St. Joseph and then up to the Nebraska and Iowa borders.  In Kansas City we will likely end up in the 3-7 degree range depending on wind conditions.  Below is the RUC forecast temperatures for 6am Wednesday morning.  Notice the pocket of cold air around zero degrees just north and west of Kansas City.  Have a great night...stay warm...and Gary will be back blogging tomorrow morning with an update on the LRC!

Ugh...if I wanted the cold temps, I would have stayed in Chicago!  ;)  Oh well...it is winter and all.

Glad to hear that Gary'll be back tomorrow.  Sounds like you've had a long couple of weeks, Jeremy.  Get some rest, you deserve it!

Rest...with kids...lol.

That gets me cold just reading about it...Do you thinks thereis going to be any arctic blasts colder than this one?..id rather have temps in the 60's..keep up the good work...and enjoy your break..You deserve it.

With another active period on the horizon and it still being January...the coldest air is likely still ahead of us.  In reality this is just a 48 hour cold blast.

Finally, I am back in my home in O.P.  What a crazy two weeks of road weather!  My trip got extended for a few more days in Iowa for my wife to visit with her family.  This morning with the 40 mph NW winds on I-80 and the fresh snow up there, we counted about 40 vehicles (cars, trucks, tractor trailers) in the medians and side of the road.  I am truly glad I rented a good vehicle for the trip.  It was a dream.

One thing I don't want to see again...blowing snow...it gets old after awhile.

Blowing snow can be a nightmare when driving.  The skies can by sunny and just the blowing snow across the road can cause icy spots.  Glad you made it back safely!

Jeremy--Thanks for all the reporting.  I have one more day off to hopefully get a little work done outside tomorrow.  It will be chilly but the snow is halfway gone from the backyard.  Currently as of 9:50 pm the wind is still out of the north and it is 14 degrees out.  I can't wait to hear more on the LRC.  I sense more bad weather is on the way!!!  Michael/Berryton/Topeka

Michael,

Thanks for the update.  Stay warm tonight!

When is Gary back?  I would love to see some updated LRC forecasts for this year

One station is saying that the worst of winter is most likely already behind us and that we could have a big warmup in late January.

What is the LRC saying?

Gary will have a new blog tomorrow.

Still hanging around 9 degrees or so... interesting how there is a leveling off period in a cool down at night, but still a lot of night to go so we will see.  Good job Jeremy for holding the fort while Gary was gone,  I will welcome mild and rain, better than mild and boring, as long as there is more fun afterwards snow wise;)

Good cold winter's morning to the weather team!! Welcome back Gary-I hope you had a great vacation and Jeremy I loved your comment above-rest with kids-indeed-it is kind of an oxymoron LOL-but I hope you get some rest and I know you will enjoy the time with the kids!!! Awseome job these past couple of weeks!!

Currently sitting at 5 degrees with just a touch of a breeze outside-for sure it is a cold winters morning with a decent snow pack here.

A couple random musings this morning that I hope make some sense!!

1. Looking at this morning's surface charts-that is a pretty strong area of high pressure stretching from Minnesota down into Central Kansas this morning-the high in central Kansas is at 1045 MB on the surface charts-when I went outside this morning it said hello Bill how are you doing-wow-it will get your attention for sure!!

2. Looking a bit ahead and looking at my score card here at home, the thing I have been looking at on the longer range models is the return of the strong upper level low/polar vortex to invade the Hudson Bay-if I have looked at things correctly on the past 500 charts (a big if!!!! LOL) one event that occured on 10-7 and then again around 11-14 was that an upper level low/polar vortex came into the Hudson Bay and sat there for a pretty good period time-to me this kind of kick started the active pattern and got Canada primed up with very cold air. Looking at the long range GFS and EURO both are hinting at this feature to indeed return around the 14-16th of January-right on time!!!! When this can be charted in actual time, I think it will spell the beginning of the 2nd active winter period. Amazing indeed!!!!

3. The next 2 weeks: a warm up should be expected-I kind of threw this out here Monday but climototlogy would dictate that we will warm up-even the most drastic winters here have a 2-3 week period of very warm weather-but more than that, I think we are for sure in warm phase of the LRC but have kind of benefited the past 2 weeks with the remaining cold air in Canada filtering down here-now that Canada is normal to slightly above, the warm up can begin-but even with that we did have 2-3 very strong cold fronts in November. Whatever the case, a big warm up after a month of what was the most part way below average temps. is for sure expected.

Just some random musings that I hope make a little sense!! In the end, I should really not care what happens the rest of winter. I have been lucky and have had close to a month of real winter weather-for this area, looking at climotogical records, 4 weeks of winter is pretty darned good!!! However, being a winter weather freak as I am, I am for sure watching for the second active cycle (and even seeing what curves the next 2 weeks has with Canada being colder than in November) and hoping it all comes together for a couple more good rounds of winter weather. I do indeed think that we will with this pattern having cold air and SW energy in the mix. Whatever the case, it has been a fantastic month for the winter weather lover and much fun in the snow has been had by 2 boys and one adult/kid!!!!

Have a great day and welcome back Gary!!!!

Bill in Lawrence

Bill,

Good analysis!  Let's see how cold it gets across Canada in the next two weeks.  The pattern will become favorable for building some high pressure areas very soon.
