Tornado Watch...Afternoon trends....January 7, 2008

Good afternoon everyone,

TORNADO WATCH until 9 PM southeast of Kansas City

The warm front made it all the way to northwestern Missouri.  There is a colder surge of air now progressing southeast across northwestern Kansas.  Once this surge catches up to the warm front it will take over and push the warm moist air to the southeast.  Thunderstorms will likely form as this takes place this evening with the help of an upper level storm that is not very strong, but negatively tilted and approaching Oklahoma and southwestern Kansas this evening.

surface 114 MON.gif

We will go into the details of the most likely spots to see heavy rain tonight.   Some areas could get over one inch of rain, while others may get less than1/4 inch.  This is what we will be going into tonight on NBC Action News at 5, 6, and 10 PM.

As the storm lifts out and east of us on Tuesday there is a slight chance of snowflakes mixed in or a brief changeover, but nothing significant is expected at this time.

Have a great day. Watch the newscasts tonight!  And, if you have any questions we will get to them later today.  The first two hours at NBC Action News are intense for us, so we can't really respond until after around 3:30 PM.

Gary

When I got up this morning it was 64 degrees! it was partly sunny...and the temperatures were rising....at about 11:30 to noon we were at 67 degrees!....maybe out high today...because the clouds rolled in and we have had off an on sprinkles/ light rain showers since then...

one thing that does make me mad...is that its raining it January!....it just seems to me like we don't get rain in January much....if it was colder...this would have been a big snowstorm for the southeastern viewers I believe...but I would fall over dead...if that happened.....

A few storms are developing in areas southeast of the KC metro area.
The GFS in the extended range looks a little interesting with a "potential" cold air outbreak down the road. However, it depicts the coldest of the air after day 7-10 in the Midwest core and the interior Northeast.

Last year we had two tornadoes near us in about a two week span in February-are we starting severe weather season this year in January? It seem's to me it has been starting a little earlier than normal the past few year's. Not sure if anything will materalize today, but it sure is warm and humid. Our high so far is 69.5. Time to sit and wait!
Oh-just wondering if anybody has attended any of the spotter training classes? I have been wanting to attend one for several year's and hoping to go this year and wanting to know what it's like.

yeah you have a point....I forgot about floods.......where I live we are not subject to floods because we are on a hill...miles away from any creek...literally...lol

but yeah...floods......and pretty devastating....
tornados are the worst....but they are so isolated most times...that theres not a lot of damage usually....

Ice storms can cause extremly widespread damage....but usually don't kill a lot of people......only the ones that are ...(sorry) stupid enough to drive during one....

Hurricanes are really bad also...but since we don't get them here...I didn't really factor in them....

snowstorms can cause deaths by people on the roads during one....

but in terms of affecting me....(which I know if kind of a stupid outlook) I would say that tornados would be the worst thing I could think of.....but again...thats according to where I live: out of danger from floods....hurricanes...and ice storm and snowstorm road related deaths...mostly cause I just don't go out and drive in them...

Gary,

I was a bit surprised to hear you say "A sign of global warming perhaps?" regarding today's warm weather during the 5pm broadcast...do you really feel that way about a singular, brief stint of warm weather in January?

Just talked to family in southern Lawrence county-they had no clue what's going on.  Now for me, I'm looking at the storm in Cass county heading for me. Certainly seeing lightning out of it. Hopefully that's the worse we see tonight!

At 6:09 PM, radar indicated a severe thunderstorm capable of producing a tornado just three miles west of Springfield.  The NWS there told everyone to take cover now.

kellyann, you are definatley welcome, if anyone knows anyone of one better, I would definately be interested.  Glad to have a computer at home to steady the LRC that I firmly believe in, its amazing.   I was exlpaining the long ranger to my parents and they just looked at me funny.  Probably not thrilled with it, but I am!
I probably won't post much, as I am still learning what the experts on this amazing blog have to offer....... thanks so much!

"Brent,

How much snow did you get in last year's big one down your way?

Gary"

I believe a good nine inches...

but I was reffering to 1912 when I said that...when kansas city had a 25 inch snowstorm...What I conside a big snowstorm is anything over a foot...not 6 inches...or 2 inches..or 8...

haven't seen one yet....

This is truely amazing having a tornado outbreak is January. The NWS shows 19 tornado reports as of 7:15; with that number continuing to increase. This is something you would see in March and April, not January.

Marlina, you will most likely see rain, if you look at radar you will see an area of growing precip towards SW Kansas, this is what will move in after midnight.

It sounds like the situation in Springfield is going downhill rapidly. As per latest NWS statement, there is a large tornado on the ground at the intersection of James River Freeway and Highway FF, and it is moving into the city at this time.

SPC is thinking about replacing tornado watch 1 with a new one, possibly PDS. Let's just hope things settle down for folks south and southeast-may be a long night for them. Need to call my family in Mt. Vernon again and see if they are ok-kinda worries me that they are so close to this bad weather and didn't even know what was going on around them!
