A negatively tilted storm, Springfield getting hit hard!

Good late evening bloggers,

Springfield, MO is being hit hard tonight.  January 7, 2008 and a tornado outbreak is in progress.  Our bloggers have been coming in with the reports.  Here is one from Jim in Clinton.  Thanks for this report Jim!

I get ky3 at Springfield here at the house and the damage reports are streaming in.  Yet the 3rd tornadic cell entering Springfield.  Roofs blown off of the schools and the Ky3 cam outside of their studio filmed insulation and debris hitting the cam!  Very active night for us.  Jim in Clinton.

You may be able to see some January lightning to our south.  The tornado watch will expire at 9 PM.  But, a storm system is approaching!  This storm is rapidly becoming negatively tilted.  You can see this below!

9 hr ruc.gif

I drew in the trough axis.  This is at the 500 mb level. When a storm is negatively tilted it will be much more dynamic, providing enhanced rising motion, and if there is enough moisture available it will produce heavy precipitation.   Notice the tilt from Wyoming, across northeast Colorado, to northwest Oklahoma.  There is an X (I sort of drew over it) over the eastern Oklahoma Panhandle.  This it the center of the strongest part of this storm.  This is NOT a powerful storm, but it is just barely strong enough to produce a nice area of precipitation.  It will be cold enough for snow over western and central Kansas.  By the time it gets here we may be just a little too warm, but it will be quite close early in the afternoon.  We will be tracking this tonight on NBC Action News at 10 PM.

Have a great night.  This is interesting, but really we are looking at around 1/4 inch of rain during the morning, unless you live near that band of heavy thunderstorms just southeast of Kansas City.  This area could see close to one inch of rain.

Gary

Temperature is down to 38 and it is chilly. Any chance of more than an inch out of this storm for us in the north?  We got up to 56 today, but that high didn't last long before temperature starting going back down.  Majority of the snow has melted so I'm ready for some more.

Didn't notice new blog was up :-)

I have seen situations like this where a small "linear" area receives these types of storms and the SPC puts the area in a Moderate and/or High risk for severe weather. They have placed the whole I-44 MO corridor under a PDS tornado watch... but the 0100 SPC Day 1 Convective Outlook still only has them in easy-to-write-off "Slight" risk brush.

This seems very familar, except much warmer when these locations had the ice storm on December 10th and the next day the next system moved farther north and dealt the bad ice storm to NE KS into NW Missouri.  Although this is because of the front and the storm, not 2 storms right?

If this were a repeat then areas in NE KS and NW MO will get plastered with precipitaiton tomorrow.  Also, parts of Missouri have seen zero degrees the same week that parts of the state have seen record highs.  Another amazing aspect is the battleground in air masses that has set up this winter in the state.

The ground still isn't frozen here in NW Missouri since there has been consistent snow cover.  I can't imagine what this pattern will be like when the warm air makes it farther north toward spring.  Or is this spring now?

If just we would get that much moisture in the artic air someday... that would be an amazing site to see. Of course, that probably won't happen because the cold air can't hold that much moisture and the precipitation shield would be less concentrated and more spread out / less intense.

If it did happen it would produce 25 to 60"+ of snow in one sitting, but, it would likely hit a line from Topeka to St. Joseph to Maryville, and totally skirt by Kansas City giving us only an inch or two :-( :-(

I think anything more than 30" of snow in one storm is very improbable in the  mid-west (would have said 25" but they did have that freak 28" storm over the Ozarks last year :-O), and 60" is near impossible. We just don't have the gulf moisture supply that can fall rapidly enough to be from one storm system, even a cut-off low would probably dry up, and even if we did the gulf moisture in that extreme of an amount would override the cold air over time. We don't have any orographics either like the Sierras have, and we don't have any good bodies of water like the great lake region has.

Spring Forecast #1.2
Updated January 07,2008 10:41pm

**3-6 Major Severe Weather Outbreaks**
**6-8 Minor Severe Weather Outbreaks**

A Late Freeze around April 20th ( Thanks Scott!)

Above Average Precipitation

Below Average to Average Temperatures (during the warm cycle a few days could be above average.)

**Major Severe Weather Outbreak possible dates:

March 27,2008
April   14,2008
May    20,2008
June   07,2008
March 01,2008 (which was tonights storm)
April   24,2008 (Tonights also)

The minor ones would be the smaller storms in between the big ones, and small storm systems that pass during the dry cycle.

**This just using some of the data I know about the LRC, and using Jeremy's ratings of the storm systems. I will be changing this alot as we get close to the spring time.**

When things wind down a bit...could you blog about the events of tonight...in particular how this event unfolded as it relates to low CAPE environments...it looked like the CAPE in the most hardest hit areas was around 500 or so.....this is very hard to forecast I am sure , let alone determine a mod-high risk for the SPC SVR Outlooks...with that said...these events seem to be happening more frequently in the midwest especially during the winter months i.e. Feb 2007 and January 2008 for recent events...this setup could have easily been over us....it would be an interesting blog which would spur some good discussion in my opinion....

And, March '06.  It would take too much time to analyze this event.  But, I am sure someone will do a study on this.

REALLY storming here in Belton...last thunder boom completely vibrated the house.  My 90 lb. pit bull has somehow wedged himself completely under my computer desk...big tough guy, eh?  I'm hoping things quiet down after this little round so the little one doesn't wake up...:0/

wow, some of the dew is frozen on the cars here and I am listening to the radio station in Springfield right now, they are issuing a tornado warning right as I type, UNREAL, (kudos to Simplykristy for the radio link by the way)  If this stuff keeps up they will have to start giving the spotter training classes in November!  I hope the best for all the people going through this.

I'm in St. Joe, the temp is officially above freezing but  touched some of the dew on the car that I got a ride home in from work and the dew droplets were frozen, although the dew on the windows was liquid, so I think it is just cool enough for the frozen dew.

Well I guess I am going to hit the hay for a while, so I can get up early and see if it is doing anything neat later this morning, it appears by the radar trends that when we do start seeing stuff up here it will just be a light rain for awhile.
