Good morning bloggers,
Yesterday was quite wet in some spots, and areas just west of Kansas City did not nearly have as much rain. A small comma head formed just norheast of Kansas City with the metro area on the southern edge yesterday. Just 40 miles up I-35 there was a line where the rain changed to snow and for around 5 hours snow fell quite heavily. Cameron, MO had many reports of 4 inches of snow yesterday. Here are some rainfall totals:
- Smithville: 0.83"
- Overland Park: 0.71"
- Downtown KC: 0.64"
- Lee's Summit: 0.60"
- Lawrence: 0.09"
Kansas City has now had snowflakes coming down on 13 days already this season! Here are some seasonal totals:
- Topeka, KS: 17.3"
- Cameron, MO: 15.1"
- St. Joseph, MO: 15.0"
- The Plaza, MO: 11.3"
- Olathe, KS: 10.7"
- Overland Park, KS: 10.3"
- KCI airport, MO: 9.8"
- NWS Pleasant Hill, MO: 9.5"
- Grandview, MO: 9.0"
Please blog in your total and I will try to add to this list! Remember winter is only three weeks old. So, a lot more snow is likely this season, especially when you consider the pattern we are in.
The Arctic Air Watch continues for the second half of January. As discussed in yesterdays blog, the pattern is setting up almost exactly as it did towards the end of November and into December in the last cycle of the LRC. In order to get a true Arctic blast we would need one of those eastern Pacific ridges to just grow in amplitude and then hold for two days. This would allow a large Arctic air mass to form across Canada, which would then blast us. But, the last time through the cycle these ridges broke down fast, in response to the "long term" long wave positions that exist. This is why we will likely get this very cold air into the United States (but most likely not in one big blast) and then the storm systems, that happened in Decmeber, will likely return in a late Janurary/February twist. This means we will have some wild temperature swings, big storm systems, some Arctic shots, warm surges, snow storms, rain storms, and hopefully no ice storms. A series of storms, at least 4 of them, maybe 5, 6, or 7 are likely to return beginning later this month and through February 20th or so.
Also, here is an article about snow that fell in Baghdad, Iraq today! A once in a lifetime experience for many. This is well worth the read from MSNBC.
