Its Raining and by Tonight, Snowing!

Good morning,

I will make this quick as we are in the middle of weather updates during the Today show.  Rain is here and in some cases appears to be mixing with snow.

January 16th Radar.jpg

But it is all rain, at least for the metro.  It should stay all rain most of the day around Kansas City.  It will be a cold rain.(unless you live in St. Joe and farther north, then it will change over to snow).  Temperatures at 5-thousand feet will be below freezing but here on earth they will remain in the mid and upper 30s at least until this evening.  That means the precipitation will start as snow aloft but melt into a cold rain as it gets closer to the surface.

Even though it doesn't change over to snow until tonight snow accumulations still look impressive closer to Iowa and wimpy heading south.

Snow_Forecast.jpg

Watch the NBC Action News Midday at 11:00 am today for the updated forecast.  New data will filter in between now and 10:30. Gary and I will analyze the data and tweak the forecast for the midday show.

Have a great morning,

Brett

This is really complex, KCI NW winds but Olathe South so the front is right through the metro right?

Up in St. Joseph this morning, we have had a mix of precipitation. As of right now it looks to be just a light rain. The temperature is holding at 34. I'm curious if the change over is sooner, will snow totals increase?

Maybe some of the accidents in or around the metro area are being caused by the light rain and oil on the roads making some slick spots. Seems still too warms for any icy conditions on roadways yet. Maybe further north a different story??

The temps are not below freezing up north.

Excelsior Springs just had a heavy downpoor, most likely all sleet. Slickining the roads.

******* Thanks for the updates, if sleet is mixing in then yes the roads will become slick.  Watch out and be careful, Brett.

I don't know how many of you fellow bloggers are in KCK.  My hubby just got home from taking the oldest to school, and on the low lying side streets he says are very slick.  On 57th and Tauromee he witnessed a Durango taking sliding lessons.

Be safe out there everyone..... I'll be inside watching the blog, radar and looking out the windows

I could be wrong but I think people are confusing slick wet roads with icy roads.  I don't understand how there can be any ice on roads around KC that have been above freezing for almost 24 hours, not to mention the surface temps are still around 38 degrees.

Anyway, I haven't went above 39.5 and I'm hoping that's as high as it goes.  Come on cold air.

I am with you on the ...."how could it be icy when the temps have not been freezing for 24hours".....Hard to understand ..... However Police Officers were reporting a hard time walking and thier cars were sliding down hills when attempting to get to accident scenes.  The PD also closed several roads and ordered salt and sand crews between 80th to 96th on N. Brighton Ave.  One car also stuck a Police Car due to road conditions.  Due to slow speeds the car was not damaged. Not sure what happened but one could only beleive that in several areas up norht the temp dropped below freezing in pockets or freezing rain hit for a short period around the 7:00am to 7:30am time frame.   Just a thought.....  Anyone else experience this?

: ) ********* Roads could be icy since, yesterday morning the temperature was 12 degrees, and it appears getting into the upper 30s yesterday was not enough to warm up the pavement.  Be casreful.  Brett

Thank you T in Liberty and others for your reports.  I wasn't questioning anyone, just didn't make any sense to me.  We sure don't need anymore ice.

Brett, what are the chances of a messy commute going home tonight?  I saw you on TV this morning and it sounded like it wouldn't cause problems until after dark, but I wonder if might be a few hours earlier now?  ******** Possibly, since the roadways are cold, but the air temperature still doesn't drop below freezing until after dark. Just be careful especially anyone living up north.  Brett

I hear you nastyweather.  Maybe since it is cold aloft the rain will drop temps enough for an earlier changeover?  Wishful thinking!  Whenever its warm aloft and freezing at the surface , depending on how shallow it is, it usually warms up, maybe we will have a reverse effect.

Radar is kind of interesting, the area of rain to the south is stopping just to our south, pretty much, and there is an area of lighter precip. to our west-northwest, and a dry band oriented SW-NE over us kind of weird looking, still waiting for things to ramp up.

Does anyone know where the cold front is located now? What are the chances of this producing more ice early and then change to snow? That could really make for some traffic problems. Well here in Lenexa it is 39 with light to moderate rainfall. I hope every one enjoys this exciting situation and how close it is to the LRC.

More EVIDENCE!!

Brett, Gary or anyone out there in the know.  I was a little concerned with the reports of ice, but after hearing kelleyann I checked the Storm Watch (http://stormwatch.com) stations.  Sure enough 2 of the stations are now showing north winds and Johnson Dr. and K-7 is 37.4 with falling temperatures and north wind.  Is the cold air ahead of schedule?

I am guessing that evaporative cooling taking place below the heavier showers caused a shallow layer below the base of some of the heavier precipitating clouds to drop below freezing, resulting in spotty sleet and  slick conditions encountered this morning.

With the rain now and then the cold and snow coming, do you expect a quick drop in temperatures this afternoon?  With the streets already being wet, that could lead to some real problems this afternoon.
