8:15 PM January 16th, 2008 update

Good evening bloggers,

It is another tough night for the weather enthusiasts and snow lovers out there. It has been snowing on the Plaza and everything is covered in about 1/2" of snow.  There is a band of heavy snow moving across in showers near the state line at 8:15 PM as you can see below on the NEXRAD image.  The area of snow just west of a St. Joseph to Lawrence line is growing and moving east.  This is the area that we will track tonight on our newscast at 10 PM.  Will it hold together?  That is heavy snow and 1 to 2 inches would fall rather quickly as it moves across.  Areas farther south will still struggle to get more than one inch of snow.

NEXRAD TOP.gif

Thank you for keeping us updated on what you are experiencing.  Keep us updated.  We still think that our snow forecast is coming through so we aren't making any changes at this moment.

We started getting really heavy snow in Lenexa (79th and Lackman) about 7:35, and it ended about 8:10. Its picked up again now. I just went out and measured and we are right at 1", most of which fell in the last 30-40 minutes. It is really cool watching it come down. The flakes are huge! And with little wind, makes it look really nice.

David,

Thanks for the report!  You should end up with just over 2 inches for this storm.

8:25 in southeast Jackson County here... about 3 miles due north of Pleasant Hill.  Sill raining... with a small bit of snow flurries mixed in.  Temp is 31.6 degrees.  Fell from 37.7 to 32.5 in the matter of 25 minutes around 7:00, but leveled off and hasn't fallen much since.

I've had 0.22 inches of rain since this began this morning.  So, still waiting for the bulk of the precip to get here.  Looks like we are going to be in very low snow total area here in southeast Jackson County... as the radar images seem to have the intensity decreasing as it moves to the east.  Doubt it will hold together long enough to give us any substantial snowfall here.

In Olathe it is now moving back to heavy snow with big flakes. so we might pick up 3 inches from this system after all. I put down 2.7-3.1 as my prediction so it looks like Olathe might be on the edge of the 3 inches. and a possible snowday

At the International Airport-
Snow began to change over around 200pm, but did not start sticking to pavement until about 530pm. In between that time, there was some light rain/ice pellets mixed in.  There have been several breaks/flurries, and then intensification since.  There is easily 1 inch on the ground at KCI as of this writing...

One thing that is different about this storm as opposed to storms of the past is the fact that it is not struggling to move in.  Checking the radar I really do not see anything falling apart.  It just seems that this snow is going to train over us most of the night.  Very nice.

I just measured the snow and we currently have 1.5 inches on the ground. It's coming down at a moderate rate. After looking at radar, it looks like we are about to get hit with some heavier snow.  I'm still hoping for 5+ inches.

Check out the radar intensity in South Central Kansas... it's weakening as we speak.  Based on the current motion of this storm, any substantial precip we will see will be coming up from the Wichita/Emporia area.  I just don't see it holding together long enough to make it here.

well, here in smithville, its been snowing for oh about 5 or 6 hours now, not enough to actually accumulate to much, just around 3/4 to an inch I'd say (at least on my deck) roads are extremely slick out here, so if you're up by the lake be careful!  We had rain (which froze on the road) topped by snow, then topped by some sleet we had been having for a few hours, now its snowing again. So, not good for traveling!

We still have about 1.10 inches in Olathe around the Old 56 highway. If the storm thats west of us hits us with about the same intensity as it is now then we could get 3 inches of snow in Olathe. Whats ur thoughts Weather Team

Here in SW Topeka we have about 1.5 inches. The temp is 21F with moderate snow and some minor blowing snow. Based on radar trends I would guess we get about 3 inches total from this storm.  If so, that would push us to slightly over 20 inches for the season!  Mike

Gary--Here in Berryton moderate to sometimes heavy snow and blowing snow.  Charlie, one of our dogs, went out to do his business and came to the door completely covered in white (he is brown).  So we immediately brushed him off!  We have about 1-2 inches here.  I noticed on the main radar the dry slot closed up.  If this keeps up we may end up with 3-4 inches.  The next two weeks may prove to be interesting.  This storm is almost like the one right before Thanksgiving.  Michael/Berryton/Topeka ************* Michael, Thanks for the report! Get ready...the weather is going to be fun over the next several weeks! Jeremy

Yes the snow seems to have lined up in bands, this time, got to walk home in Heavy snow, the best walk of the year in my humble opinion;)  the flakes were so large you could see their shadows cast upon the white ground under the street lights, and in the north wind it was accumulating to the front of my coat, with "crespucular(sp?) like shadows being cast by the tree branches that blocked the street light from hitting the falling snow and of course the soft crunch of the fresh snow under my feet, ahh!
Here in a bit I will do a measurement!

Well I just got the call to go plow snow. Like I didn't see that coming. I hope the day crew has done a good job so far. Thanks to the weather team and the LRC I have know about this snow for a long time. And I already know about the next up and coming snow events. Not to mention a chance for snow in late march.
