Special Weather Statement updated at 10:30 PM

Good late evening bloggers,

UPDATE BELOW:

There is very good trend going on right now on LIVE:ESP.  We are going to up our snow forecast for most areas on our 10 PM newscast.  More in just a few minutes as I am on the air at 9:32 PM and 9:57 PM right before our newscast on NBC.  Once again, an INCREASING area of heavy snow is taking aim on our local area.  Here it comes!

Below is ESP radar at 10:08 PM.  You can still see the rain/snow changeover line near or just southeast of  Harrisonville, MO.  It will pass through everyone before midnight.  And, notice the large area of heavier snow moving in from the west.  2-4 inches will be likely throughout the Kansas City metro area.  1 to 2 inches will be possible for those of you south of a Pleasant Hill to Paola line. And, 5 inches will be likely for areas a bit farther north.

ESP 1010 PM.jpg

The roads are becoming slick and hazardous.  Be careful out there.  Please watch Brett Anthony in the morning and him your snowfall totals in the blog.

Arctic air is heading our way and the storm systems have just returned.

Gary

Well I just got the call to go plow snow. Like I didn't see that coming. I hope the day crew has done a good job so far. Thanks to the weather team and the LRC I have know about this snow for a long time. And I already know about the next up and coming snow events. Not to mention a chance for snow in late march. Good late evening Weather Team!!!! How are you holding on?? You have done just a tremendous job with this event and the updates have been fantastic!!!

It is a winter's night here in SW Lawrence-we currently have moderate snow and a very stiff North Wind with a temp. of 22 degrees. As of now we are closing in on 2 inches-had one moderate band come through about 6:00 and then a 2 hour lull.

Looking at the radar, big caveat here as always LOL, the heavier snow has just cleared Manhattan but another band has developed West of there and there are some stronger echoes that have developed between Manhattan and Topeka. Also, there is still some development betwen Wichita and Emporia. It seems the whole area is moving East-North East. I think Lawrence should see this moderate snow for another 2-3 hours at least if not a bit longer. Think being the operative word here!!!

One thing for sure, we now have a snow pack again here in Lawrence so it is going to be interesting to watch just how cold we get Thursday, Friday, and Saturday nights.

Scott: Great link-that is a very telling synopsis isn't it!!! I noticed that the 21Z RUC had the 850 low a bit stronger and a bit further South. As always, great blog entries by you!! Just great stuff!!!!

Pvt. Murphy: Many congrads to you!!!!

Well, time to call it a night-this is a great event, (been a blast to track the past 24 hours) but most likely not enough to call school-oh yea-school-darn forgot to grade those papers tonight!!! My hobby this time of year always seems to get in the way of my real job!!

Thanks again weather team for providing such a great place to learn and discuss the weather-you are all Tight!!!!

Have a great night!!

Trimble is 5 miles north of Smithville.  I have seen the flashing emergency lights on 169 from my front window for about the last 3 hours.  I live just outside of Trimble to the west.  We are pushing 2.5-3 inches of snow up here.  The temp is down to 25 and the wind is occasionally gusting to 15 mph or so.  If you want to check out my webcam tomorrow morning you can kind of see where the wreck was.  It's just to the right of the street light in the middle of the webcam and across the field that you will see.  Can't see anything now though except for the street light.

mstauss said:

Thanks Erik27 I'm glad you find the site useful,  I wish the time lapse resolution was better as well.  The time lapse comes from wunderground.com.  My webcam software can create a higher res video, but it's about 3 meg for the day and I don't want to get into bandwidth issues.

I just took a snow measurement when I let the dog out a couple minutes ago and I'd say we're easily up to 3 inches here.  Judging by the radar we could get a couple more and that would make Gary dead on for the 5 inches he is calling for here.  If that turns out to be the case it looks like Gary and the NWS were the only ones to get it right.  That will also put us at about 16 or 17 inches for the year up here, which is already several inches more than I had last year.

3.5 inches here just south of St. Joseph and snowing very heavy, 1 inch in about the last 45 minutes.  That brings the season total to 26 inches and this storm isn't over yet.  If we have several more hours of this we will be at 6 to 7 inches for this storm.

I can't remember a winter like this since maybe 1993.  The last really snowy winter here was 2000-2001, but I bet this one will set records if this is just the beginning of the second cycle.

Great entries-indeed, you do have to stop and smell the snow!! Personally, going for a jog on fresh fallen snow is just fantastic-soft snow under your feet-the clean cold crisp air-just amazing. And the quiteness during a snow event-taking a walk in the woods during a snow is just spectatular as well!!! It is a great experience to track a snow event but it is even better to get out and enjoy it!!! I should also mention the fun of building snow forts with two young boys and pulling them sledding behind a mountain bike LOL!!!

Have a great night everybody-if it is your cup of tea, enjoy the snow-I sure plan to!!!

I have a question that most likely has been asked in the past but would love for you to answer . It seems like here in Blue Springs that the snow almost always accumulates the most at night through the early morning hours. Why doesn't it seem to ever start in the early morning and finish in the evening. I know this has to be true because I'm always walking in the snow at this time it seems and not sleeping.

What is the deal with radar returns and lack of intensity in snowfall right now in Blue Springs? It looks like we should be getting a least some moderate snow but I stuck my head outside and it was hardly snowing? Is anyone on the west side of Blue Springs getting some decent snow right now? How about anyone in Independence? It looks like we might have 3/4" without measuring. We need to get something going for a least a couple of hours. This is killing me. Gary, did you have an answer to my previous question? Thanks

I was getting upset the last big snow St Joe had. I have lived around St Joe all my life and was always so mad, especially last winter, KC and South had all the snow and we didn't. I move down here, and wouldn't you know it, now St Joe get's all the snow and south KC doesn't...Grrr. But, the more I think about it, Im glad, we get warmer temps than St Joe and don't have to mess with the snow!!

About 1.0 inches of snow here in Blue Springs and snow is picking up in intensity. I will take 3 inches. My snow removal service really gets going with about that much.

Its falling heavily in LV, with 3.5 inches already we could be looking at possibly 5 inches, I'll be sure to send in final snowfall total in the morning.

Lee's Summit- East side--  exactly 1" at 4:25 AM.
It's interesting to note, we had no snow till 9PM which the change over line was only moving about 4 MPH.  I'll send in the liquid precip as soon as the snow ends here and the rain gauge thaws.
