4:00 AM Update

Good early morning bloggers,

Thanks for visiting the blog this morning.  I welcome your snowfall total updates.  Here is the latest on the forecast. The snow should end over most of the metro by 6AM.  The roadways are snow covered and snow packed.  It took me twice as long to get into work this morning as it normally does so please be careful.  Below is the Rapid Update Cycle model of RUC.  It shows all of the snow east of the NBC Action News Viewing area by 9AM.

RUC_Jan_17th.bmp

Clouds will hang tough over the area most of the morning. The sun should be out by this afternoon.  But it won't warm up much, due in part to the high albedo of a fresh snow pack.

The albedo of fresh snow is 80% to 90,  meaning 80-90% of the sun's energy that reaches earth is reflected back to space. Here's a look at afternoon temps today. Highs will only be in the low to mid 20s.

Back to NBC Action News Today.  We are on an hour early.  Check us out for an update.

Have a great day,

Brett

3 miles north of Pleasant Hill.  Heavy dusting here.  Can still see the grass in many places.  Maybe 1/2" total accumulation at best.  Once again... looks like we just missed on the "good snow" from this storm.  That brings our snow total for the season to 2 3/4".  Been a lousy 2 months for us snow lovers in SE Jackson County. ****** Maybe one of these storms will be a little farther south, Brett

I've been too busy to get out of the truck and measure but will verify my totals a little later this morning....Everyone have a good day, be safe on the roads!

Here at 130th and State Avenue in Western KCK I measured 3.25. Bryan **** Thanks, be careful out there everyone.  It looks like now that the snow has ended road crews are really making a dent, but watch for blowing snow.  Brett

Just arrived at work in Lenexa.  Made the drive from near Pleasant Hill to 69/I-35 junction in about 45 minutes (normally takes me 35 minutes).  Roads were snow packed in many areas, but overall they aren't too bad.  Didn't encounter many icy spots... just snow.  Will get worse, however, when traffic gets heavier as it was very difficult to see the lanes. ***** Great info, thanks.  Brett

Looks like about 2" here at the office.... compared to about 1/2" at home.

About 3.5" here by pflum. And now...on to Monday!!. The greatest part is that I don't have school!!:). Gary, do the trends show that Monday could be an accumulating snow? ***** The European is more promising than the GFS. Brett

I've never heard of albedo before and right now that makes me even colder to know so much warmth is going to shoot back upwards.  Brrrrrr ***** Yeah, this is one of those times where it really plays a role in forecasting the high temperatures. Brett

In Lenexa at 79th and Lackman, we have a solid 4" of snow. I took six different measurements in our yard, and they were all between about 3.75" and 4.5". Where did that 2" that you showed for Lenexa come from?  David **** That came from weatherfreak who measured the 2 at his office but didn't say where.  There has been a lot of blowing snow, so he may have measured a thin area.  Brett

I haven't ventured outside yet, but from the looks of things, I'd say we have a healthy 4+ up here in Maryville.  Guess I better go get my shovel...  :(

DWXTRACKER- I had the same situation here in western KCK, I got several different measurements across my yard ranging from 1 inch to 4 1/2 inches.. I think a lot of it is just drifting snow from the winds. I finally though settled on 3.25 inches in my area.

Our snow total in Platte City is now around 20 inches! At least in my yard.  THIS IS AWESOME!! Thanx again Snow God!

measured 3.9" here in trenton this brings us up to 25.5" for the season.. so if it were to stop snowing now, and not snow again, we would be 6.2" above normal for the season.. so i have a feeling with winter having a couple more months left, we are really going to blow away the seasonal average.

Glen,

Thanks for the update!!

I got up and slipped on my snow boots over my jammies and trudged outside to get some measurements and here is what I observed NW of Leavenworth. I is way to COLD to be outside in just your jammies!!..And after 7 different plundges of my ruler on the average we have 3.75 inches of nice light fluffy snow. I noticed Highway 7/73 is snow packed and slick and that people are still driving to fast for the conditions, Slow down and be safe!!!

Good Freshly fallen snow morning to the Weather Team!!

Quick check in as wouldn't you know that this would be the morning that I massively over slept!!! Lost of scrambling this morning LOL

This is not an official measurement but based on shoveling the drive this morning (waking up at 6:15 and still having to clear the drive makes for some great vidoe!!! LOL) SW Lawrence recieved between 2.5-3 inches all told!!

Oh, there's my first signal that students will be in my room shortly-am I ready-nope!!! Have a great day and I hope Gary that you Brett, Jeremy, and Jeff will get a chance to enjoy the snow-it is just gorgeous outside this morning!!!

Bill in Lawrence

P.S.: Can't wait to track the cold this weekend and see how the Monday event plays out-I think if my score card is correct, this is related to the warm front on sterioids event of 12-1??

*****************

The early week storm would be the storm that occurred the first weekend in December.  Should be fun!

Thanks for the report!
