Snow Totals...7:30 AM Update

For the latest weather information make sure to tune into extended weather coverage on NBC Action News all morning long.  Also, the midday show airs from 11am-Noon each weekday!

If you are about to head out the door this morning please use extreme caution.  While the snow has stopped falling, the roads are snow covered and icy in many spots.  I saw numerous cars in the ditch and also a few accidents on my way in to work.  A typical commute for me is 25 minutes...today it was 50!  So plan for some extra time and please be safe.

Thank you to everyone who has sent in snow totals overnight and this morning!  Please send in a final total and we will try to include everyone's on either the blog, WxPlus, or NBC Action News.  We would love to hear from bloggers all parts of the viewing area!

First off...

KCI Airport officially reported 3.5" of snow.  2.5" was recorded on Wednesday which tied the daily snowfall record for January 16.

  • N.Oak & Barry Rd, MO:  2.5"
  • Grandview, MO:  2.0"
  • Lee's Summit, MO:  1.75"
  • Blue Springs, MO:  1.75"
  • Belton, MO:  1.0-2.0"
  • Blue Springs, MO:  1.0 - 2.0"
  • Pleasant Hill, MO:  1.0"
  • Grain Valley, MO:  1.0"
  • Gunn City, MO:  0.75-1.0"
  • 10 mi. N. of Warrensburg, MO:  0.25"
  • Sedalia, MO:  Light Dusting

Stay safe this morning and make sure to let us know how much snow fell in your backyard!  Gary will have an update later this morning.  The weather is about to get very cold, and very exciting over the next 7-10 days!

Good Freshly fallen snow morning to you Jeremy and the Weather Team!! Posted this in the previous as well-sorry for the repeat!!

Quick check in as wouldn't you know that this would be the morning that I massively over slept!!! Lost of scrambling this morning LOL

This is not an official measurement but based on shoveling the drive this morning (waking up at 6:15 and still having to clear the drive makes for some great vidoe!!! LOL) SW Lawrence recieved between 2.5-3 inches all told!!

Oh, there's my first signal that students will be in my room shortly-am I ready-nope!!! Have a great day and I hope Gary that you Bret, Jeremy, and Jeff will get a chance to enjoy the snow-it is just gorgeous outside this morning!!!

Bill in Lawrence

P.S.: Can't wait to track the cold this weekend and see how the Monday event plays out-I think if my score card is correct, this is related to the warm front on sterioids event of 12-1??

Anyone happen to know how the roads are on 291 and 152 up north near Liberty? My husband has a Mustang and has to drive from 291 and Stark to I29 and Barry Road and wants me to take him.  I kind of hope he can just go himself...  The hill here at Stark can be an issue, so I'm hoping someone knows how that is??? : )

Anyone been on 169 and down through the Broadway Bridge?  I HATE driving in this stuff...any help would be appreciated (I drive a Hyundai Elantra, so its not a great snow driving care, either)

My wife sent my son to school this morning.  He called asking me why no one was there.  : )   IMO the road crews should have left the snow on the roads.  I think with the temps falling like a rock most of the wetness is refreezing causing quite a bit of havoc.

I'm curious by next weekend how much of a snow pack we'll have, considering it doesn't appear it will rise above freezing anytime soon and the start of the really good snow storms kick into high gear, according to the LRC.  More snow please!

Only bad thing about the LRC is it comes back to remind a person how disappointed they were with the lacking snowfall the first time around. Let's start all over with a new LRC and one that actually snows worth something in SE Jackson county.
Although after seeing the massive school closings, anything over 1.5 inches would shut the mtro down for a week at least, our senior community must be having a good laugh at us that with all the latest techno everything we cannot keep a school open with this measly amount of snow, and it is not that doggone cold!. The snowfall total for us in Sedalia is close to nothing but more than I expected, basically a good dusting. We still have a few flakes falling and adding to the dusting. So the official total I'm going with is a dusting plus a flake or two more. Driving home from work early this morning was interesting. I drove from Warrensburg to Sedalia and it was snowing moderately all the way to Lamonte which is about 10 miles west of Sedalia. As soon as I hit Lamonte everything changed to rain and by the time I got out of my car at home it was fairly warm out  with a nice gentle rain falling...amazing how the weather changes over a few miles.  Steve

Kellyann,

While temp is important, do not discount two factors in these storms..

One, the dominant longwave.  For this pattern, we are seeing exactly what has been the trend for the last two months for this part of the cycle.  [Thank you LRC]

That said, the pattern within the cycle is morphing a bit now as it is getting stronger and more amplified.  That has brought a slightly different track in the past - but maybe a bit later in the pattern near late Jan/early Feb.

Two, these storms we will see in the next two weeks are going to be a bit different - especially later in the period.  These are not so much the clippers that we have been seeing from the NW, but more of a SW origin.  Because of that, they will have a tendacy to have more WAA potential due to its path and warmer origin.

Then, it will all depend on this cold air we have in place.  I contend as a trend this year, it will remain rather shallow.  But..since we are in the strongest part of the cycle at the heart of winter, I am projecting the cold air to be up to the 700mb layer deep.

Even with the WAA, I am thinking we will remain cold enough for snow generally and stronger later in the trend..but that is what I think based on the trends I see.

Will we see some rain potential out of this specific storm?  Yeah..possible with the warm trend leading up to it.  That is a very strong trend in the cycle.  We will have to watch the temps, but the trend brings 10-15 degrees above mean just right before the storm.  So timing will be everything.

Remember how we got into the 60s in December leading up to this storm?  Go back a previous cycle to October.  Look at that warm trend on the 10th.

Heck..I know this is blasphamy..but go one more cycle back to August 15th.

Oops..its there too.

I could be wrong...but I don't think so yet.

kellyann said:

Scott, yes, you are right about the trends, very obvious for anyone to see I would think. I was thinking it would probably get nice and warm for a day or two and then get blasted ..that is within the next 2 weeks. Thanks!
