NBC Action Weather Blog

Late evening update

Good evening again NBC Action Weather Bloggers,

I am going to attempt to place a map in here a new way.  Look back in ten minutes to see if I can succeed.  If I do, then I can have yesterday's blog replaced with the maps I had lost on there.

7 degrees at 9 PM!  That is cold, but it is going to get a lot colder during the next week.

Oh my, a map!  The other maps from previous blogs will come back up sometime tomorrow.  In the mean time look at the noon 850 mb forecast for Friday.  This is showing a band of high relative humidity coming across at 5,000 feet on Friday. We will likely see a few snow showers as this happens sometime on Friday.  No significant accumulation is expected.

A strong cold front will move through on Friday.  It will likely drop to below freezing on Saturday morning.

Then, uh oh, here comes an even stronger Arctic front. Look how strong that Arctic high is by Monday morning. That is a 1052 mb high.  WOW!  The strongest of the season, and it will likely drop to 5 below zero, even 10 below zero across northern Missouri by Tuesday or Wednesday morning.  And, look at the curving isobars across eastern Kansas. This is an inverted trough/front/wind shift line.  It is forming in response to the flow around that western United States upper low.  Snow is almost a sure thing on Monday, but will it be a dusting or significant accumulations?  More to come tonight on NBC Action News and on Friday.

Well, it looks like this new way of doing the maps is working for now!  Have a great evening.  Bundle up, it is cold.

Gary

The maps came up immediately for me.  Hallelujah!  I was having map-withdrawal.  It is a very serious condition with no known cure.

I am so sorry that I didn't dress up the maps.  We will work on that tomorrow.  Have a great night.

Still in the single digits here in St. Joe, good troubleshooting by the way Gary.
The infrared sat loop for the region really shows the snow pack pretty well as it is refrigerating the air above it and it is also showing the lakes down to the south really well to. The thing that is really neat is that I think I can actually see the "warmer" air pushing eastward in Neb. ahead of the next front, with the warmer colors moving forward intermingled with the colder signature of actual cloud cover, one thing to consider is that if it does get windy enough tomorrow and the snow stays powdery enough, that could cause a bit of blowing around of the snow that has already fallen. Well good night from the frozen tundra of St. Joe!

Looks like St. Joe was down to -2 overnight.  The cold spot in the region(reporting stations).  Thanks for checking in early Friday!

Brrrr, I don't like this cold at all!!!!  Time for me to escape, leaving for Southern Texas/Padre on Monday, please make that snowy forecast disappear.  You all enjoy your cold weather, bundle up Jeremy, I know you don't like this any better than I do.  It's beaches and sunshine for me......keep safe!

Sorry, Jeremy.  Even the frigid temps won't help your Packers against my mighty Giants. Two down and two to go.  After the Pack, it's time to end the Patsies' unbeaten string.

I'm not a Packers fan...that would be my wife.  I am loyal to the Vikings.

A funny story though...our home in Wisconsin still has not sold.  We are now offering 2008 Packers season tickets with an accepted offer by January 31.  I'm talking about this odd incentive on CNBC today at 3:40pm.  Check it out!

Good chilly/snow pack morning to the Weather Team!!! How is it going this morning Jeremy?

Currently sitting at 20 degrees here in SW Lawrence this morning under a hazy star lit sky-you can really feel that humidity this morning that Gary was discussing last night. What a fascinating last 6 hours watching the surface charts-like I have always said, it dosen't take much to amuse me LOL

I noticed last night that we really plummeted between 5-8 and here at my house we made it to 8 degrees by about 9:00 (The Lawrence reporting station NW of here was at 4) then I noticed we began to level off at that time and from 8-10 we did not drop anymore-I began thinking to myself that we must have gotten back into a return flow-when I finally got time to look at the 3Z surface charts I noticed that indeed we were in a SW flow and there were some 20's in NW Nebraska and the Dakotas around 11:00 last night. I have always been amazed and will always be amazed how quickly we can respond to a SW flow here in Lawrence-we actually rose about 5 degrees during the night last night. For sure, this is a little thing when compared to a storm, but I have always loved following the surface charts and seeing how things react on that level-last night was pretty cool!! It also brought back a bad memory of the snow beast that wasn't in January 2004-it was one degree when the clouds began to role in and I was like here we go-then the dreaded WAA kicked in and by the time the precip. started we had sleet and 30 and then at the height of the storm rain and 35-thank goodness we had a surprise 4 days later but that storm will always for me be the one that got away-it looked like we were going to get 16 inches out of that storm...

That being said, latest surface charts now show the winds about to switch back to the NW and there are some sustained 25 MPH North winds in Nebraska-right now looks to be our warmest hour of the day-the arctic air is on the move!!! I think Concordia, Kansas has already gone to a NW wind so we are not far behind. Man is it cold in the Dakotas and Sotuhern Saskatchewan-there are some minus 20 readings up there-Unleash the hounds!!!!! LOL It is going to be a very cold and blustery day today for sure!!!!

It is funny I haven't even really looked at Monday or beyond-I have been "stopping and smelling" the snow and cold we have now-This is so awesome for a winter weather lover as myself that I am going to just enjoy the next 12 hours!! LOL To be sure, my "curiousity" will not be held back and by this weekend I will be looking at things full throttle-but for today-watch the front and the truly arctic come down and enjoy the snow we have!!!

Have a great day-great job with the maps-there is nothing more frustrating than doing all the work and then having the computer not run it-PowerPoint and I have had many battles in the class room over the years-it usually wins LOL!!! As always thanks for reading and thanks so much for providing such fantastic information on the Blog and even more interacting so much-the team has created quite the incredible experience here-each of you should take great pride in the Blog and how you have made it such a fantastic place!!!!

Oh, there is a knock at the door-it is Mr. Arctic front commin for dinner!!!! Again, Uleash the Hounds!!!!

Bill in Lawrence

**************

Bill,

Good morning.  The temps made a steady climb overnight.  5 in KC before midnight and now around 20 degrees!  The radar is showing a nice burst of snow around Omaha this morning.  I wouldn't be surprised to see a Wind Chill Advisory or outside chance of a Winter Weather Advisory today for the area.  This would be for the very cold air, strong winds, some blowing snow, and dusting to half inch of snow.  This will be very fluffy snow.  Keep us updated today.

Jeremy, I also am a die hard Viking fan. I was born and raised in St.Cloud, MN. I've got to give Favre props though on his season.

I just can't praise the Packers:)  That would be like a Chiefs fan saying good things about the Raiders.

Well, being a Bears fan, it is hard for me to say this, but i hope the packers win the superbowl.  That way i can say we beat the champs twice this year. As for the Vikings, we will get you back next year.

The Bears and Vikings both need a QB.
