Arctic blast arrives...evening model analysis.....UPDATED

Happy Friday Night In The Big Town!

Temperatures are going to crash to below zero over some locations tonight.  Then another strong Arctic front will slide in here in a strange way Monday night.  I will write this up in our blog tonight, so check back in later this evening!  Look below at the 8 PM surface map:

temps4.jpg

O.K., bloggers.  This set up for early next week is so strange.  We are caught between the northern branch of the jet stream and the southern branch.  The NAM says we stay in the southern branch and a very cold airmass sags back in here on Monday night, keeping us in the deep freeze next week.  A warm front will move northward into Kansas on Sunday into Monday.  It will become an inverted trough/front and change back into a sagging cold front Monday night.  We may make a run into the 30s Monday before we go right back into this cold air mass on Tuesday and Wednesday.

Below, you can see the 850 mb forecast for Monday evening.  A large area is covered in cloud cover at this level.  And, if we don't go into the northern branch above this level then it could be cloudy with some very light precipitation for a long duration.  I don't know if all of this makes sense to you, but now you can see how complex this really is for Monday through Wednesday. One thing for sure there are no major warm ups for another week.

Have a great weekend.

This is nice... I am going to take the kids sledding and don't have to worry about which day for awhile, its not melting for awhile.   Looking forward to the next snow!
16.4 degrees wind NW 6 mph.   Pressure is rising.

Yes, I should have issued an Arctic Air Warning!  Have fun sledding.

Boy...talk about a quite night here!  Anyway Gary, the next few days are going to be really nice with this cold air.  Question though...the "other station" at 4PM said one week from Monday, we could be headed towards 60 degrees.  She said that after next Friday, it looks that our cold spell will be over and we will start to head into a much milder pattern.  PLEASE tell me thats not right!?!  Looking at the models, around next Monday and Tuesday we warm up.  But to me there looks like there is a dip in the Pacific that is rather cold that looks to be entering the west coast about the time we warm up.  In your opinion, within the next 15 days, does it look like we will get cold again with ANY chance of snow that would be "big"?  I know it's a long way out...but just seen' if you know.  Thanks Gary!

Good evening Weather Team!! In the middle of Sleep Over part IV just when you thought it was safe to clean up the house..... so a quick check in:

Quickly approaching the single digits here in SW Lawrence-currently at 11-not sure what the official reading is for Lawrence but my humble abode is sitting at 11. No WAA to stop us tonight LOL Unleash the hounds!!

Jacob:

Just a couple of thoughts:

1. Remember, Gary and the team put out their thoughts back in early January and they have stated several times including yesterday with great maps and analysis that everything is on track.

2. I fully admit that I have not looked beyond today for the past 5 days but going off of memory, there was even in the stromy part of this pattern the opportunities for warm ups and combine that with the fact that we are gaining day light pretty quickly now it would not be surprsing if we did have a few days of warm weather between now and mid February. Also, Climatology tells us that after a big cold snap like we are now experiencing, we usually do warm up. Rarely, in any decade, have we had a winter where the cold like this or highs in the 20's locks in for a month-it just does not happen that often. So, taking the LRC and Climo there is for sure a possibility of having a day or two where we warm up maybe even significantly

3. Putting two aside, it is my guess that that particular forecast is based on one maybe two runs of the GFS one even being the off run. Furthermore, taking into account that 85% of those watching that forecast would want to hear about a warm up and there being one run of one model that supported it, the forecast was made.

Just my thoughts-hang in there man-the models will flip flop around like a Bass on a Buzz Bait-I am a believer in the LRC and will always be and that is what I will follow-and of course more importantly the analysis by Gary, Jeff, Jeremy, and Brett!!!

Have a great night-I hope that when the "sleep over" calms down I will be able to post some more temp. observations and maybe this weekend really dive into the next few weeks with the hope some of the ideas will stick LOL!!!

Thanks, now I have to go back and look for Jacobs concerns.

Sorry, one more thought:

I also think that it is telling that around January 3rd when many local media outlets, weather forums, and national media were talking about the end of winter for the lower 48 it was here that talk of the cold returning in about 3 weeks began to really rev up!!!

Just a thought

Bill in Lawrence

----------------

Bill,

Please expand on this thought next week, so we don't beat our own drum!  Isn't it amazing.  Not only was our forecast the exact opposite of those, but it is almost 100% right, which makes those others 100% wrong.   There is no middle ground and we are obviously proud of our forecasts.  We will continue using the LRC, and maybe others soon will see that it is indeed a major discovery.

Hey...thanks Bill!  Great points.  I'm not doubting Gary at all.  I strongly believe in the LRC and that will never change.  Just don't want warm ups!  Love the cold...and it seems that when ever it warms up...thats when we get our nice storms, and there is not enough cold air for snow...just stupid RAIN!  Thats why I don't like warm weather in the winter.  Or any time for that matter.

Oh nooo...Gary don't get mad...please...???  lol. :)

-----------

Jacob,

I won't!  Just be patient with this pattern.  Remember, EVERY other weather source we know of out there had no idea it would turn this cold.  It has happened, and this is not the stormy part of the pattern.  Remember that 45 day forecast.  So far it is right on, even amazing to myself.  So, let's just see how it sets up later this month and through the first half of February.  We are predicting the future and it is amazing the accuracy we have had this year.  It will definitely make it into my next presentation of the LRC.   Try to enjoy the moment.  Have a great weekend and we will worry about the long range when it gets into the shorter range.  The next storm early next week is absolutely strange at this moment, so let's try to figure out that first.

There's a chance even KCI with a deeper snow pack could see -8 to -10 before this season is over.  The potential is there down the road.

Good morning Jeremy and the weather team---It is minus 1 here at Berryton.  It was zero about 30 minutes ago and then it slipped under.   It must be about 10 more days until the "big" storm system arrives?  Is the pattern doing funny things that might cause a fluctuation because of the way the next Artic front is coming in?  The question will be, I suppose, will the next big precip be snow or will it warm up enough to just cause rain?  I just hope it isn't another ice storm. Keep on watching for us.  I look at the long range models but they change so much. They can't keep up with the LRC.  Thanks, Michael/Berryton/Topeka

****************

Michael,

Long range models have huge errors involved.  We like to use the LRC and have found success doing so.  The Monday system could bring freezing drizzle and some snow to the region.  I'll talk about that later today.
