As one of my college professors always liked to say when an arctic high settled over the Midwest.
If you watched Gary last night he forecasted -2 for a low in Kansas City and -10 for a low in St. Joseph, an almost perfect forecast which is very difficult to do when temperatures are crashing. The temperature at KCI was the coldest morning low since December 9, 2005 when it was -5. Here is a look at some of the lows across the region this morning.
- St. Joseph -12
- West of Smithville -8
- Lawrence -9
- Chillicothe -4
- KCI -4
- Minneapolis, MN -14
- Fargo, ND -22
- Sparta, WI -24
With arctic high pressure overhead today, highs will only be about 8-15 degrees across the viewing area. Our forecast for Kansas City is 12, St. Joe 8, and Clinton 15. It certainly isn't out of the question for KCI to stay in the upper single digits today, but with the wind switching to the SW this afternoon and full sunshine lower teens look fine.
Here are some cold weather statistics if you are curious. Number in ( ) is the high/low that day.
Last time KCI recorded a high temperature in the single digits: January 23, 2003 (9)
This was also the only time from 2000-2008 that a single digit high in Kansas City occurred. From 1990-1999 there were 10 times that the high was in the single digits. The coldest occurring on January 4, 1999 (4).
The last time the temperature was sub zero for a high in Kansas City was December 22, 1989 (-8). Sub zero high temperatures are very rare in Kansas City, but in January of 1912 and December of 1983 there were 4 days that had sub zero highs!
While we aren't in record territory with this cold airmass currently in place, I do feel that temperatures will be even colder over the next 2+ weeks. The -4 at KCI this morning likely will not be our coldest morning this winter season!
Later on this afternoon/evening we will focus on the precipitation chances for Sunday-Tuesday across the region. Until then stay warm and enjoy your weekend!
