UPDATED: Snow potential on Friday

Good evening bloggers,

You bloggers are so funny.  I just was wondering if anyone was checking the blog.  but as I talked about in the last blog, with the ground so cold and temperatures in the teens during the morning any snow that falls will immediately accumulate and potentially cause problems.  But will it happen?

The new data tonight is quite impressive.  We are in the left front quadrant of the jetstream, which is south of Kansas City.  It is a rather interesting and potentially snowy set up for a brief time early on Friday morning. It is not easy forecasting a fast moving small snowstorm, and this is a strong possibility on Friday.  Someone could easily see one to two quick inches of snow, but the atmosphere has to saturate first.  The mechanism for this will weaken by noon.  Let me show you the jet stream.

300 mb 1.gif

Look at the darkest blue color in the little streak moving into northwest Oklahoma.  This will flatten out and not be a factor by around noon to 2 PM.  But, between 4 AM and noon we are in the very strong left front quadrant of this jet streak.  The left front quadrant is the strongest area of lift when looking at jet dynamics.  The right rear quadrant is also an area of lifting, but this lis way down off the Baja California coast which obviously is not a factor.

What does this mean?  It means snow is likely in our region, but not for everyone.  It just so happens that Kansas City is near the area that will have this lift combined with some limited moisture return, and most importantly it is EXTREMELY cold out there still.  It is only 8 degrees right now at 9 PM and cold air masses saturate fast with any lifting mechanism.

It will be an interesting morning to watch LIVE:ESP.  Radar echoes are already increasing north and west of Wichita.  I am going to bed.  Jeremy Nelson will be doing the weather, tracking this developing small snow event beginning at 5 AM on NBC Action News Today.   Somewhere near by may get 1/4 to 1/2 inch and it would be instantly slick out there, but other areas may be just left dry with flurries.  We are just bordering on the side of caution just in case.

The warm up is still on schedule beginning this afternoon.

Gary

Plese do tell. By the way, this morning at 4:30am I had 10 below 0 here north of Lawson. Talk about cold. Maybe we do need a little break from this kind of temps. But I will take snow any day. So please let us know what you think.

Gary, it's probably wise to advise your viewers that there is a potential for a dangerous situation tomorrow morning so at least they are aware of the possibility.  If it does not happen, then everyone can breathe a sigh of relief.  If you say nothing and the snow materializes, then everyone will be unhappy and say you blew the forecast big time.  If this snow does not materialize, at least you erred on the side of caution.  If it does materialize, it's another feather in your cap.

----------------

I agree, and you know that we always tell you what we think will happen.  These small ones are the trickiest, but we see a lot of signs of this happening. But, who will get targeted the most.  I will talk about it at 10 PM.

I'm excited about the potential for some measurable snow tomorrow but has anyone else looked at the monster snow potential for next Thursday from 6 a.m. through Friday at 6 a.m.? It looks to me like a widespread 6-12" snow with isolated 12"+. I know it is a long way off but it sure looked impressive to me on the GFS model prediction. Possible Winter Storm Watch by late Tuesday night? Anyone else with me on that one?

We are with you on this, but a week away is a very long time.  Confidence is growing.

Off the subject of snow for just a minute. As I was driving home from work today I got to thinking about the thickness of the ice on ponds and lakes in the area. Does anyone know the average thickness of the ice? Doesn't it take about 2" of ice for us to be able to walk safely on it?

If it does snow in the morning I sure hope it starts early enough so that schools will be canceled before all of the kids start getting on buses.  It sounds like the timing is going to be key!  I would love a snow day, BUT I am all for it waiting until we are safely at school as well.  Thanks for the great info Gary!

If anywhere between Topeka to KC and St Joe gets over 1" you will be my hero Gary!!    I just dont see it.   Not enough moisture and it moves too fast.

How many times do you get to be a hero for predicting a minor storm?   We shall see in the morning.

-------------

So one inch in that triangle and I am your hero.  Wow!  Or, if not, am I your goat?

I just want the snow lovers to know the sacrifice I'm doing for you -- we are putting our house on the market, so it's SURE to SNOW a lot in the next month -- at least in Overland Park!

(I'm joking about my egocentricism . . . but this year's LRC has NOT been kind to getting outside work done on our home.)

Good website on ice safety!  Having grown up in Minnesota, my own preference is for at least 6 inches to walk on the stuff.  Lot of spring fed lakes up there, so you could always easily hit a thin spot and not know it.  Better safe than sorry.
