60s in sight and Thursday preview!

Watch NBC Action News weekends at 8am & 5/10pm for all the latest weather information!

What a great start to the weekend!  Highs reached the mid 40s to low 50s across the viewing area.  The snow is quickly vanishing across the region.  Only big piles and north facing surfaces have snow remaining in most spots in the metro.  The next two days will eliminate the snow in most locations...even northern areas around St. Joe and Maryville should see the snow disappear.  Below is the visible satellite from Saturday afternoon.  The snow pack is now over mainly northwest MO.

Heading into Sunday the accelerator is pressed to the floor and temps are set to soar!  Most areas will be in the 50s, with an isolated 60 in southern and southwest areas.  Then by Monday most areas should top out in the low 60s with a strong south to southwest wind(20-35mph).  The mild air is streaming in out ahead of a large storm system over the West.  Below is the 500mb map for Sunday afternoon.  Notice the vort max dropping into the West and the mild southwest flow over the Plains and Midwest.

gfs28.gif

By Monday a trough will approach the area giving us a chance of showers and thunderstorms.  At the moment no severe weather is anticipated.  Colder air arrives by Tuesday behind a cold front along with a chance of a mix or snow.  The Monday rain and Tuesday mix/snow chance will be our focus on Sunday's blog.

A lot of people have asked about the Thursday storm which we have been talking about for a long time(weeks).  The 18Z GFS finally placed the track in a very familiar position for this winter season and one that we have been anticipating that the models would trend towards.  This storm is still a long way out, but we are gaining confidence on the track.  The one thing that is still a big question mark is whether the storm develops and is negatively tilted...or will it be more progressive and positively tilted.  Negatively tilted would probably mean more snow...positively tilted would mean a faster moving storm and less snow.  The 18Z GFS is more progressive...but still brings accumulating snow to the region.  Here is the 500mb map for Thursday.  Notice the vort max over north-central Oklahoma and that the wave is positively tilted.

gfs29.gif

This storm will have many different 'faces' on each model run, but we are very confident that a storm will occur in our area around Thursday.  Before we get to Thursday we have a lot of forecast challenges to focus on with the big warm-up and also a chance of showers and thunderstorms for Monday and a snow chance by Tuesday!

Have a great night and once again a huge thank you to everyone that watched the debut of NBC Action News Today Weekend Edition!  Keep in mind that airs each Saturday and Sunday morning from 8-9am!

Hopefully we get around 3-5 inches of snow for Olathe. is that a Possibility with this storm.

**************

At this moment I will not eliminate 3-5", an inch, a trace, etc.  Too early to give exact totals but I do expect accumulation somewhere in the viewing area.

Jeremy,

"The 18Z GFS finally placed the track in a very familiar position for this winter season..."

When you made that statement, are implying that the winter weather will track more to the north than the southern areas of the metro?

It may be too far out to tell, but I was just wondering...

Thanks,

Fred

***************

Fred,

At the upper levels the vort is taking a track like some of the others.  It could lead to heavier snow totals to the north, but still way to far out to get that detailed at the surface since the track, moisture, etc. are yet to be determined.

Hello Jeremy, is it possible this storm could be on Friday instead of Thurs if it slows down, Just wondering have to travel on Thurs, so hoping it hold off intel Friday.

********************

It looks to be Thursday...but if it is negatively tilted it would probably slow down and may be delayed.  Keep an eye on Thursday and Friday.

Jeremy...I don't ever recall seeing a forecast that didn't call for anything thursday...and I know they all have it now...some think it will be more impressive than others...but they all have it....and like I said...one station said that there would be a series of storm systems setting up out in the pacific....and that most of them would miss us or be rain...at first I thought that he got that straight from Gary...but when I heard the last part I knew that they were way off......that is...if you trust Gary...which I do....

I know you don't like to hear what the other stations say Jeremy...so I will try to limit my comments on them...but some need to be posted....

I also believe that it would be  helpful to your guys' station if you put out some snowfall number by tuesday maybe....that is, if the storm is still showing up on the models......waititng till the last minute to put out a snowfall forecast upsets the general public I believe...and they will watch other stations...just so that they can find out how much snow is going to fall...I know because I know people that do that.

anyway...I am not trying to push the other stations forecast in your faces...

I just think some things are interesting... ;)

Not any possibilty of an ice setup on thursday?

******************

Nothing can be ruled out this far out since the storm has not even formed.  But an ice storm like 54 days ago does not look likely at the moment.

Jeremy, the morning show was great.  I definitely like having the NBC Action team on in the mornings on the weekends.  With the possibly storm on Mon/Tues, are you expecting a fair amount of moisture in the area?

**************

Precipitation amounts right now for Mon/Tues look to be under a 0.25".  To me that is pretty light.

Hi Jeremy,
I got to watch a little of the show this morning, really nice not to have to flip around the channels now.

But while I was waiting for you to come on at 8 and channel surfing, I came across this story of a 10 year old boy out in Oregon who built his own snow machine.

He made 3 feet in snow in one night with a air compressor and power washer, amazing!  Couldn't help but think of all the snow starved folks around here.
Here's the link to the story

Jeremy.....Maybe you all have addressed this before but could you explain negatively tilted  vs. positively tilted?  I comes up often in the blog and I am not sure what it means.   Thank you   Debbie S. McClure

*****************

Debbie,

I know some past blogs by Gary addressed this in more detail and with pictures.  But a positively tilted vort max is aligned from southwest to northeast(leans forward).  Negatively tilted is from southeast to northwest(leans back).

im hoping for 3-6 up here north of the river in Parkville! Jeremy, Do you think that it will be widespread or will it hit the north of the river or south of the river hardest? I hope we get a nice huge snowstorm all over the area!

*******************

Hard to tell right now, but I think everyone should see some snow.  Like any snow event we probably won't talk total accumulations until about 2-3 days before the storm.  Although it does look like some accumulation is possible.

Sorry I never mentioned it before. The snowmachine is fairly simple if you have the right stuff for it(compressor, washer, tools, etc..). The snow it makes is very fine and powdery and reminds me of the tiny snow on Friday morning.

Hello Jeremy, I woke up this morning and It look like it snowed, heavy frost, what cause such heavy frost, Will it be like that tomorrow morning?

****************

The little snow we had yesterday morning melted in many areas and that low level moisture combined with temps dropping to the dew point overnight led to a frosty start this a.m.  The frost was so thick I did a double take to make sure it didn't snow overnight.

I have to admit I thought of you when I saw that story.  You make the snow and we can have a blogger party at your house!

When I was googling snow machine to find the boy's story on the internet, I found a site for a company that makes snow machines back yards too.

It seems like the 0z GFS has backed off significantly on the snow(and other precip) for Thurs.  Do you think this trend will continue?
Also, does this trend fit with the LRC longwaves?

Thanks, Eswar

-----------------

Eswar.

It actually fits the LRC almost perfectly.  If you look back at December 12th-13th, this storm was positively tilted as it moved through.  It will be a very close call.

Hmmm...Monday/Tues storm will be interesting.  I am going to pass on much if any snow nearby..but if the vort tilts a bit negative, I may revise this.

Oddly, I looked at some of the severe products.  The cravens has this area included in some slight risk.  The supercell composite also brings a 3 which is a bit high for wintertime.

I would not rule it out, though if the trough digs a bit further south, maybe Brent will be the only one to talk about it.

This is all prog analysis.  I don't see the temps helping with this setup too much based on progs for snow.

If the wind on Monday is suppose to be 25-35 mph, what are the gusts going to be like! I need to get a windmill generator.

I live on a open prairie in La Cygne with very few trees; and when the winds howls this fast the whole house takes a beating. I will be retreating to the basement as I hate strong winds. :)
