Early morning radar trends....January 31

Good morning NBC Action Weather Bloggers,

There are a lot of radar echoes this morning, but it will take a while before our first snowflakes begin to fall.  The upper level storm will be tracking across Oklahoma, but we will get a northern extention of this storm as it approaches us later this morning.  Here is our forecast snowfall map based on what we are seeing right now:

blank radar map.jpg

LIVE:ESP is now showing an area of snow gradually moving our way and we are expecting it to spread across most areas between now and noon.

More in a little while....Meteorologists Brett Anthony & Jeremy Nelson will continue tracking this situation through the Today show on NBC, and on our brand new Midday Newscast later this morning.

Any indication that the ULL will shift NE enough to give us a bit more snow? Do you see strengthening or an increase in coverage a possiblity? ***** It looks like on Satellite imagery this morning, the ULL is strengthening but also tracking farther south.  If that trends holds look for less snow.  Brett

Brett, what's the best possible way of tracking the ULL on an updated basis to look for any shift change? ***** Look at a water vapor image if you can find one and compare it to the RUC.  Brett

Doesn't look to far south on the radar, lol.  I wish it wasnt, the radar area of snow is huge and right over eastern KS.  I hope this does have a suprise twist, lol.
Good morning Bloggers and NBC!  I will check back in when I get to work.  Have a great morning!

Gary and The Weather Team:

Good gray morning to all of you!! Interesting storm to say the least!! How are you all holding up??

A few random observations that as always I hope they stick and make some sense:

1. What a great pic on the water vapor imagery this morning-that upper level low is very evident but it does look to be diving south

2. Surface observations are very interesting: 7 degrees in NW Kansas with teens in Salina-I have warmed up to 33 degrees here and had a steady climb since about 3:00 A.M. This storm for sure strenghtened and brought up some warm air.

3. We do indeed have some decent returns heading for Douglas County but they still have more of an Eastern trajectory to them-at least to me-looks like areas to my south i.e. Baldwin, Ottawa, Lone Star will see more of the precip than Lawrence proper. I am probably way off with this but it does appear to me moving more east.

4. What will happen will happen but I think it fascinating how this ULL intensified last night-you could see it on the water vapor imagery at about 11:15 last night really gettingh its act together. If it was just 150 miles North....Still, this is going to be fun to follow and a great opportunity to discuss and learn-always interesting to see a storm kind of blow up on satellite

5. Not really about the weather but I posted this last night and I think it may have gotten lost so I will repost it again as I am of course kind of worried about it. I just want to throw this out there: I hope my posts yesterday did not come across as trying to challange your forecast-that for sure was not the intent at all. I was just looking at things and really voicing my thoughts out loud and seeing if any of them were even a stone's throw from being on the right track.  The more I think about them, I can see where they could be construed that way-if so, I apologize. I do often worry about going too over board with all my musings but in the end, I am a History teacher who happens to really love the weather especially winter weather but do not have much weather acumen in reality-but I did stay at a Holiday Inn Express last night....

One thing for sure, it is going to turn sharply colder later this morning and as that low kicks buy, the winds will increase. Oh what maybe could have been!!!! Have a great day-as always thanks for reading-this has been a great experience tracking and learning for sure!!!

Bill in Lawrence

------------------

Bill,

We didn't think that at all.  So, don't worry about it as you are valuable part of our blog experience.

The upper low is way down there, but it is likely going to open up a bit and go through a transition, and a shot of PVA will likely create a nice area of snow.  Let's see if it materializes.

Once the active pattern ends mid and late Feb. stand a good chance of being above average.

I'm in Salina and I've had probably an inch or so of dry powder... I would expect the KC area to be similar with maybe 1-3"... Its not so bad... Its going to be a pretty snow and not tons which will cause massive problems!

Looking at radar its very easy to tell there are snow band really wrapping up and going south of Wichita into Northern Oklahoma.. A very heavy band of snow is on the Vance AFB radar extending from Harper County Kansas into NC Oklahoma. That wouldn't suprise me if it was producing rates of over an inch an hour and maybe thunder!

Its the Southern parts of Kansas and Missouri's turn anyways, I'm not dissapointed because the Northern sides of the States have had alot more activity this season so far!

Whew, that was tough, had to clear off the 2 inches of snow overnight, tough drive in, but the road crews are keeping up. That 5-8 inches the NWS warned me about last evening was right on target! ****@!#?/@*!*       Now that is a pile of snow if I ever heard it!

THANK YOU GARY for being right on target again as usual!!!!!!

My suggestion like everything associated with the governing body is allow the private sector to now handle the weather forecasting now as well. it is obvious that our tax paying money is not keeping the weather computers up to speed as you guys once again nailed this and the NWS after scaring the bugebees out of those petrified by snow events falls short again.

Answer this, why in the summer when we have severe weather they issue a severe thunderstorm watch, maybe a few hours before it may occur, than if it looks likely as storms are on the radar and intensifying  they then upgrade to a warning. (this after the storms are active and moving toward a specific area) BUT like yesterday the darn storm was just a swirl of clouds in SW Colorado and lookout, we have a watch, and then not even seeing anything headed into us on radars and snow being hours away a "warning".
I have learned for the last time to tune out everyone, everything, and ONLY monitor you and this blog! The other stuff only excites snow lovers like me and then frustrates the heck out of us when it falls apart.

My only change in that thinking will be when you head up the "LEZAK WEATHER SERVICE".

I should have known all along, and now I do, to not pay any attention to anyone else.  You were steady on the 1-4 even when others were already building snow castles in there minds. Maybe you should hold training sessions for further advancement in forecasting.

EXCELLENT WEATHER FORECASTING GARY AND TEAM ***************

2" of snow is more of a hassle and mess than any fun!  Just screws up the roads!

Snowing in LS right now. My driveway and street is starting to become snow covered. Nothing heavy, but snowing.

We leave for St. Louis in a few hours. St. Louis is talking 6-8 inches by tonight.

We are heading straight into it looks like. I love the snow, but driving 4 hours in it with a 1 year old is not fun.

Wow, major let down from going to bed last night. I realized this storm wasn't going to materialize here in KC the way it was originally thought even up to yesterday, but I thought we could atleast squeeze 2 or maybe even 3 inches out of her...looking at the radar trends, don't even see that happening. All the (good) precip is staying in the well defined "comma head" and very little is making its way north. Doesn't even look like areas on south side of town will see an inch out of this, let alone the 2 or 3 that is still being predicted...

**************

Actually this morning Brett had a dusting to 2" in the forecast.  Anyways, there is good band of snow from parts of Jackson county southwest to Miami county.  Let's see how the totals pan out before we judge anyone.

I have tried to call you, your probably a little depressed your not getting the brunt this time.  My Oklahoma counties have 3-4".  SE KS & SW MO took a while to saturate.  Joplin is seeing heavy snow w/ about an inch per hour rate.  Along the I-44 corridor (at my house, yes!) going 4-7" w/ isolated 10-12" amounts.  I will enjoy it this time.

Snowing in Olathe right now...

I'm just thankful this isn't ICE. That's one of the worst things about living where we do, is that so many of these storms start out as ice. The last storm we had, I almost couldn't get off my exit ramp to go to work, and the car in front of me was burning his tires--I could smell the rubber! Not good. But, today, no problem. Now, as long as I can get up the slight incline on my street and my driveway, this shouldn't be a problem.

Weatherteam, thanks for all your hard work! These winter storms can be so difficult to predict!!!

Well all the cows were gathered around the hay bales - is there an old wives' tale about that?  When they lay down, it means rain!  What happened to the "birds are silent" tale from yesterday?  They sure were quiet this morning - not even feeding!  VERY unusual.  Maybe they know something we all don't!

Is the snow down at kansas oklahoma border going to break off from the other part of the storm and move north towards kansas city. Looks like a possibility to me. But what the heck do I know?

I think our snow is going to develop/expand over the area as some lift moves in.  The radar trend has been moving the snow over the city in the past hour.

Quick update in between classes: sun peaking out here in Lawrence-wound up with about 200 snow flakes!!! I knew in my logical brain that this storm was not going to produce not only from the models but more because of the team's analysis and your instincts,  but man my passion/love of snow really did think/hoped we were going to somehow pull a rabbit from a hat/catch lightening in a bottle on this one. If  things just tracked/formed about 100 miles differently....

Oh well-I've learned alot and it has been great to follow-good luck to everyone in SW Missouri on into St. Louis!!!!

Well I've officially lost faith for any significant snow (i.e. 4"+) for the remainder of this winter season for JoCo.  Oh well, maybe we'll get some exciting thunderstorms this Spring.  No significant damage would be preferable though.

Regardless, you guys didn't waiver in your forecasts yesterday and that's excellent.  Ironically, you may have been too aggressive with 1.5" on the Plaza, but you were much closer to reality than anyone else.
