Storm is going farther north

Good very late evening,

I already have had to deal with a few very angry viewers saying that I just hyped this up for whatever reasons.  I know most of you understand how forecasting works and that we at NBC Action News, NEVER hype anything up.  We tell you what we think will happen and I know that most of the time we are correct.

This storm is going farther north, and we should have just gone with my theory and known this.  While I am writing this it is snowing heavily on the Plaza. The southern edge is literally the Plaza, but as the band rotates through later tonight many areas to the south will get some accumulations.  Areas to the north will be in the 6-10 inch band, like we thought yesterday.  It isn't over yet and the main circulation will move by during the morning rush hour.

We will keep you updated overnight.  Let's see where the bands of snow end up, but it is so similar to many of our storm systems this season that I have a feeling what it will be like in the morning.  Some of us will have a lot of snow, and others will be scratching their heads.  I would still say that the north side of the city will get 4 inches or more, and the south side may still end up with 2 to 4 inches, so it isn't like we were way off.

Have a great night.  We have poured a lot of energy into this storm.

Gary

Looking at the radar, it would appear that for you folks south of KC and east of 35, what you see on the ground right now is all you are going to get out of this storm. Why in the world is every snow storm hitting the exact same spot every time (i.e. north and west of KC)? Can not ONE of these upper level lows track a bit further south and get KC in a nice snow for once?

I hung on every word today and I can only follow your forcast online out here in Ozawkie.  I wouldn't trade your forcast for anyone's... not even out here in Topeka viewing area.  I'm not sure if I'm considered part of your North or West area... probably more like LONG DISTANCE NW area, but I still watch and believe in you!!

Right now we have pretty heavy blowing snow since about 9.  From 630 on it was freezing rain/pellets.  We have about 1.5" of thick wet snow now and the big flakes keep coming.  Mocha can't wait to get out in the snow and leave her paw prints in the snow!

Gary,
You never hyped the storm on TV.  You were going with what you thought was going to happen.

As a person who resides in the south part of the metro, I feel the frustration that our northern viewers went thru last year.  It's not our time.  Our time will come again.

For those viewers who are angry, don't take your anger out on the team.  The team did the best that it could.  Mother Nature has the ultimate decision on what happens with the weather.

Let's think about the people who have been impacted by the severe weather today and tonight.

It is snowing with a little bit of sleet.  It's a dusting so far.

On that note, I am out of here for the night.  Have a good night, everyone! :)

Now this is what the dragon likes to hear: logic and reason, something lacking from the blog every time the word "snow" is mentioned. While the Dragon thinks Gary should've (not "should of") stuck to his guns (i.e. his "original" forecast) instead of being led astray by the snowlust of the blog commenters, still, it is an inexact science, even with all the models, gizmos and doo-dads they have available.

It seems to me there was no hype, and that you hit this one 90% accurately.  Co-workers were telling me the other forecasts from around town, and once again you hit this one for me and left them all saying "guess we shoulda watched Gary"

You hit it for me and members of my family in town from Iowa.  We're all thankful and glad that they aren't stuck on I-29 headed home!!!

It's weird to look at the KDOT site and 90% of the state of Kansas is partly to completely snowpacked on the roads.  Can you guess where the other 10% that doesn't have bad roads is at?  Yeah that would be extreme eastern Kansas.  Of course that will probably change overnight.  I guess I'll still hold out hope for 4" in JoCo south of 435.

Good luck on the storm Kansas Citians.  I live in Breckenridge Colorado but spent 6 months of 2007 in your wonderful City on business.  I've become hooked on the NBC weather team's blog!

As I sit here in Breckenridge typing this...we are at 2 degrees below zero with 67 inches of snow on the ground....so I can't imagine anyone begging for more snow  :)

Your all's passion for the weather is awesome...I can't help but spend a few minutes a day reading Gary's blog.

For those nay sayers...cut the team some slack....they could cut the blog off all together and then where would absent K.C. fans go to read all the fun??

Take care everyone, hope you good a blizzard and if not....I'll live vicariously through you during the upcoming severe season.  The scariest night of my life was last spring during one of your terrible thunderstorms...we don't get tornadoes here and I don't know how you live thru that every spring!

Good late evening to all of you!! Snowing in Lawrence with a temp. of 27 and some pretty gusty winds-by the looks of it, we have close to an inch so far and looking at the radar we still have some decent snow to go. I'm still kind of watching that band of precip. that is just south of Dodge City-it is sitting there rotating around. Well, it is for sure a wintery night here in Lawrence!!! If this was the winter of 2005-2006 I would be bouncing off the walls-ok, I am any way-there is snow on the ground!!!

Hang in there-all of you are excellent at what you do. You saw the data at 6:00 P.M. and went for it-I respect that!!!! Your forecasts have always and will always speak for themelves!! I hope you can get some sleep tonight-these past two storms have really taken the cake so to speak and have been frustrating beyond words-so close.....However, this current event is not over and it is never over until the sun comes out!!

I have always said this and will say it again: in the words of my students you guys are TIGHT!!!!!

Have a great night

Bill in Lawrence

P.S.: Some day we are going to get the classic 4 corners low that tracks just perfect with cold air in place-it will happen again!!!!!

Well I have to say this is turning out to be "our" LRC year in terms of snow here in St. Joe, yup it is coming down out there, today brought such an array of weather events, from thunder sleet and snow storms, to what I would call "slizzle" for most of the afternoon/evening( slizzle= drizzle and drizzle pellets(small sleet)) to now heavy snow with it blowing pretty good. I just also want to say that I'm sorry to hear about the death that this same system has caused to our south and east with the severe weather.

Here in SW Topeka we have had heavy snow for the last 90 minutes or so.  Looks like we are at about 2 inches now.  The temp is 23.0F at my house.  The radar looks like the dry slot in SE KS has a chance to rotate up here and take us out of the snow later. It's kind of hard to tell.

My son played basketball earlier tonight in Overland Park so we had to make the trip down I-70 and back.  We ran into some pretty heavy snow on the way back between 8PM-9PM just west of KC to about Lawrence. Glad we made it back OK!  Mike

I am just as bad as the kiddos I teach-still hoping for that 4-5:30 am phone call telling me school is cancelled..still possible...keep the faith!!

PS. Gary & Team-you are the most accurate...bottom line! Thanks for the efforts!

After a bout of moderate snowfall we got a heavy dose of sleet for about 10-15 minutes, followed immediately by HEAVY snow. I went outside and listened for thunder...that's how hard it was snowing a little while ago. Winds have died down considerably but are still gusty. Looks to be over an inch already and piling up fast.

Gary's passion for weather is very contagious, and I could see his frustration with having to move the "bullseye" back two counties north on the 10 o'clock news cast. He desperately wants to change public perception about weather forcasters and has stated so here in the blog. I just don't know why so many of the bloggers here make some of the comments about the forcast being off a bit. Gary and his team are still the most accurate, most passionate, and the least Hype-driven forcasters in the midwest, and perhaps the whole country. Whether I get 3-6 or 6-10 tonight really doesn't matter to me...what matters is having this kind of access to someone who could very possibly go down in history as the person who figured out a more accurate and predictable way to forcast weather. Let's give credit where credit is due and stop the childish behavior when a forcast isn't what you hoped for.

Gary...you are awesome and you have built a team that other stations around the country can only dream about. keep up the great work!
