Snow Moving Back In...

Watch NBC Action News Today from 4-9am for the latest weather information!

Radar update below!

First off thank you to everyone for sending in snow totals overnight.  We are using the totals as we receive them!  After about 1-3" of snow made it thru parts of the metro late Tuesday and early Wednesday, the deformation band of snow is about to push into Kansas City.  Light to moderate snow can be expected thru the mid morning hours...or a little longer in some areas.  Below is a look at the Topeka radar around 4am.  This band will gradually move through this morning as the storm begins to lift off to the northeast.

winter storm.gif

Radar at 6:30 AM showing heavy bands of snow rotating through.  Snowfall rates in the brightest pink colors will be close to 1/2"/hr:

Radar 633.gif
Here is an early look at snow totals overnight.

  • Platte City, MO:  7.0"
  • St. Joseph, MO:  6.0"
  • Bethany, MO:  6.0"
  • Lawrence, KS:  5.0"
  • Cameron, MO:  4.0"
  • Leavenworth, KS:  4.0"
  • Edwardsville, KS:  3.0"
  • Liberty, MO:  3.0"
  • Olathe, KS:  2.0"
  • Stilwell, KS:  1.0"

A huge thank you to everyone who stopped by the blog on Tuesday.  We set a new record for weather hits on our blog smashing the old record!

Very light dusting just north of Pleasant Hill.  Once again, the KC dome has lived up to it's reputation... and once again, we should've just stuck with the initial snow forecasts.  You guys have done an AWESOME job covering this storm (as always), but in the end, it always does exactly like you thought it would in the beginning.  Will be lucky to see an inch over here (based on what I'm seeing on radar currently).

*****************

If the band can just push east!  It is making good progress right now, but areas SE of the metro will see the light totals again.

Probably around 4" back west here in the boonies of Salina... I sorta nailed this forecast not to make a huge scene... I'm not bashing Gary here either, his LRC is why I KNEW the heaviest would stay north and follow the same path.. We have had over 30" of snow now this winter here and we still have a good solid month to go where we can get more heavy snows!

Now KC gets to have the back side of the system and this should produce an inch or 2 before it moves on out ******* Good morning, We are thinking the same way, one to two more as it moves through.  Brett

I hate to change my snowfall report so much on you guys as I know you count on accuracy, but venturing out a bit further from the house I got three measurements at 3.7. Did locate two different drifts on the north side of the house at 11 inches. Light snow just now begining again here in NW Wyandotte County..So looks like from radar we could pick up another 1-2 inches easily putting my area near the 6 inch mark. Not bad guys, Not bad at all!

Sorry the changes...next time I'll have to just have to get away from the house for a more accurate measure.

Just a dusting- 1/4" here in Paola, thank heavens, certainly hope it continues to push north and not come east, the radar looks ominous, lurking out there ready to dump on anything in it's path!!  I'm just thrilled that we're having school, roads will be manageable and a safe here and perhaps flooding will be kept to a minimum from all the moisture we've had the past couple of days!  As for the mud and muck....I think that is going to be with us for a long, long, long time.  Glad to see you made it in safely Jeremy, everyone else be careful out there.

Easy snow day for the kids in Platte City!  I didn't get a measurement before I left for work, but it looks to be approaching 5".  What's really amazing is KCI is approaching 3".  You could really tell the difference on the roads.  I was tredging through snow in Platte City, and could barely make it around.  Much less and easier travel by the airport.  Keep in mind, Platte City is only about 6 miles north of KCI.  Looks like I lucked out on this one.  I'm thinking 7" before it's done!  My sympathy goes out to you folks in the south; really... I know what it feels like.

Read the blog headings from yesterday and especially around the new time last evening. Gary could not have made it seem more sure to hit. Maybe all the latest computers SHOULD be discarded as last storm the NWS looked stupid, and this storm the amature weather community saying all day long very light totals were right. Make it sound warm and fuzzy all you want, you guys busted on this one, 2 in a row is not looking good.
I understand when we go out on a limb a day or so ahead, but given a 4-6 hour window last night before it hits and hard, to see this was plain poor! The NWS has some bags they used last week available.
Bring on Spring, maybe that is forecastable.

-----------------------

Yes, it was ridiculous.  We just missed this one.  And, even though it was only 4 to 6 hours away this is just how it works sometimes.  I know you probably know that I am just sick about it.  Think about it?  We though it was heading right towards the city, and it just missed us.  Just drive 15 minutes to the northwest and you wouldn't be so upset with our forecasts?  At the same time, we understand.  We are just as frustrated as you are.

I would like to direct the attention to our bloggers about the weather in the south from yesterday.  It was a deadly day. CNN is reporting 32 people dead from the stroms throughout the south.  We may not like the snow here now, BUT we have our homes and families still with us.  Our thoughts and prayers go out to those families who lost homes, friends or family members yesterday.  A couple of 100 miles makes a HUGE difference in what we experience.

A GREAT REMINDER from Jeremy,

As promised about a week ago I told you that I would contact the NWS in Pleasant Hill to get an explanation for all bloggers as to how the snow total is measured at KCI and also where.  George Amis the Observing Program Leader for the NWS at Pleasant Hill sent me some great information in regards to the measuring techniques used at KCI, and also some tips for measuring snow in your own backyards.  Once again thank you to George for the information.

Snowfall and snow depth observations are taken every 6 hours at the Kansas City International Airport by contract observers. Midnight, 6 am, noon, and 6 pm CST. Snowfall is the new snow that has occurred since the last snow measurement...and is measured in inches and tenths. Snow depth is the amount of old snow still on the ground...or the combination of the new snowfall and old snow...and is measured in whole inches. The observations are taken near the control tower.

To take new snowfall observations when nothing is on the ground can be taken in several ways. If you take a measurement in your yard...look for the snow where it appears to be near its average depth. I.E. you don't want to take a measurement in drifted areas. If cold enough...you can use a patio...or other elevated structure such as your vehicle. If you do measure in the grass...remember when you put the measuring stick in...you will most likely go all the way down to the ground.

However...the snow might actually be sitting from 1 to 3 inches or so above the ground in the grass blades. So to prevent anomalously high readings...you want to only stick your yardstick as far down as to where the bottom of the snow actually is. If you can make or buy...the best way to get new snowfall measurements in non-windy situations...is to have a snowboard. This would ideally be a 16 inch by 16 inch piece of thin plywood painted white. You would place this on the ground or surface of the snow when there is the possibility of new snow falling.

It needs to be light enough to not sink into the old snow and heavy enough not be blown away by the wind. If on snow...the top of the snowboard should be level with the surface of the snow. It would then get swept clean prior to the next snowfall measurement.

In windy conditions...where the snowfall does not stay on the snowboard...you will need to make several measurements around the area to get an average...avoiding the highest drifts. These conditions make snow measurements much harder to do...but experience will help with this.

I'm sad and disappointed.  I love snow... but even though for us here in Lee's Summt it was a bust, I understand how difficult it is to forcast.  If this were rain and we only got a tenth instead of an inch, nobody would notice but when it comes to snow, it's a dusting instead of inches so some people get angry.  I would much rather be disappointed than surprised.  It's a lot safer.  Thanks for all the work you all do everyday...even the boring ones.  I will always have more confidence in the KSHB forcast than any of the others.

Just took my boy to work. Looks like we might have had some ice right before the snow, not to mention the wet roads right before the event started. Slickest driving we have had up here all winter. Snow is falling at a moderate clip and the winds seem to be picking up a bit. Little drifts everywhere, but nothing major. I measured a skosh over 3" in several spots at my house.

I do not consider this a "bust" by the weather team. They made some last minute adjustments - one moving the snow 2 counties further south, and one moving it back. I don't know what the team based these changes on, but in the end the LRC was dead-on. I would be curious why the team wavered on the LRC trend when it has been so reliable for them in the past?

Anyhow, very happy to have the snow around and hoping for another shot at record snowfall before the winter season is over. I will continue to sing the praises of the NBC weather team. Great job, guys!

To be honest, at least for me, the anger that has been expressed in this blog the last several hours is not necessarily because of WANTING snow, because believe me, I would rather be disappointed snow-wise and be safe than be hit with a blizzard.
And I don't like my husband driving down K-10 to work in his battered old car which doesn't handle well in bad weather--I fear for him every time he gets behind the wheel.

For many of us, any anger/frustration/disgust comes from the fact that a lot of us use these forecasts to PLAN OUR WORKDAY.  I canceled all of my clients last night for today based on this information, and now am out big money for today.  It makes me look ridiculous the way I was hyping the snow to my clients on the phone.

I'm not blaming anyone because even the NWS missed this big time, but these are indeed big misses and to be honest, I'm not going to make this same mistake again. I will believe the snow totals when I actually SEE them, and drive on in to work and take my chances.

Good Morning again!! Just came in from shoveling/playing (LOL)-SW Lawrence has 5 inches on the ground (taken in 5 spots that are wind protected) and it is still moderately snowing.

If you love winter like I do, it is awesome this morning here-snowing and blowing snow with a temperature of 21. That being said, Lawrence again caught lightening in a bottle with this event-we managed to get below freezing before the onset of the precip. so evertything that fell was frozen. 9 times out of 10 that does not happen. The forecast for Lawrence and the far west part of the metro was spot on!!!

Just one other random observation: The LRC nailed this storm-the storm was there and was just as wet as the one on 12-9-simply amazing!! No, it did not hit everyone equally (remember in Novermner 2006 I was in the same boat with Baldwin (8 miles away) getting 9 inches and Lawrence getting 20 flakes) but the fact is, the storm was there and it was very wet-simply amazing!!!

Hang in there Gary, Jeremy, Brett, and Jeff-you called it as you saw it and that is all you can do!!! In reality, the forecast worked out quite well for much of the far west side of the metro!!! I can only imagine how hard all of you are being on yourselves today-don't be-all of you are excellent at what you do and are just fantastic mets. Keep that in mind today!!!!

Well, I've got two boys (and a middle aged adult) who are going to be chomping at the bit to get out and play today-the snow is very wet so I see a massive fort building project in store today plus some sled rides behind a bike!!!! LOL-Will I survive the onslaught???!!! LOL Besides, have to enjoy it while I have it-next year will be totally different!!!

Have a great day and get some rest-you deserve it!!! All of you are TIGHT!!!!

Suburban Sam in South KC here..... It is snowing pretty good here now... harder than anything we had last night. Got here at 4:00am and cleared the parking lot of about 3/4" of snow/sleet and now the lot is covered again. Measuring on the railings around our deck I would say we have a little over an 1" and if the snow keeps up at this pace I could see another 2" inches by the time it is all said and done. My final prediction for Red Bridge & Blue River Rd. will be 2.5" to 3".....

Keep up the good work, and don't let all the nay sayers get you down. The Action Weather team is the Greatest and last time I checked none of you were God so if you miss the exact location of the storm path and the heaviest snow totals you are forgiven.

I think the weather team did a great job, as i remember them giving their assessment of what they thought it would do when the latest data came out, then went to NOWCASTING.  So when the storm takes a turn or tracks a certain way, they adjusted the forecast accordingly.  No way at all did they blow this forecast in my opinion. Great work Gary, Jeremy, Brett. Just hope everyone got some snow out of this, and from the reports, most did.

Thank you so much!  Of course I agree with you and I will try to make this point in a blog later this morning.  As soon as we saw that it was going farther north, we let you know.  This is the bottom line.  And, it is snowing, which is another point I will make.  We are just off on the exact amounts.  No one had a perfect forecast.  It drives me nuts as we strive for perfection which is impossible when forecasting snowstorms.

AMAZINGJOB WEATHER TEAM!!!!!!......your probably guess....North Leavenworth here and we are buried under 7 inches of snow and it is still snowing. It amuses me how upset the people in the southland are over just a dusting, drive 30 miles North, get out play in it, heck if the urge strikes I am sure liots of folks will let you shovel for them, then get back in your cars and go back to the south....TAA DAA...problem solved.
As a side note to the person who cancelled there work day based on a weather forecast, isn't that a bit like sneezing at night and cancelling all plans for the next days because your sure your sick, I think?? we are all adults here and can acknowledge the fact that the Weather Team did the best job they could at pin pointing who what when and where, given the fact that they are all men dealing with a very fickle female...Mother Nature....so pull on your big girl/boy pants and stop whining.

Jeremy/Gary---It is still snowing lightly here in Berryton--My wife and I are working from home today--couldn't get put of our area--almost got stuck but made it back to the driveway--I measured 7.2 inches--Topeka so far has 7 but with the snow the last hour another quarter to half an inch has fallen.  We have drifts around 1 foot to a foot and a half common.  I know the northern areas have larger drifts.  I will send another total when it is done snowing.  That puts us at the house over 30 inches.  I started snowing heavily here around 7:45pm last night.  I noticed on the radar that the southeastern corner of Shawnee county was pure white which meant pretty heavy snowfall.  Take care--Michael/Berryton/Topeka

The dragon is pleased to still see rooftops and definition between the driveway and the lawn. Everyone can claim victory because A) it did indeed snow and B) it snowed a lot in some places that were forecast to get a lot.

BUT

As someone earlier said, decisions are made based on the data at hand and the Dragon made a decision to take the dogs in to be boarded a day early. That cost some money that wasn't really necessary, not to mention that the pups had to spend an extra night away from home. The Dragon's decision, to be sure, but based on being in that mysterious 4-8 inch band that never made its way south.

We've got to remember that despite the effort to know everything about everything, it's still Mother Nature and her whims that rule. The Dragon would like to take some credit, though, for whatever POOF occurred.  ;-)

Be safe, all.

-------------------

It didn't go "poof".  Poof, we should save your favorite term for when it does go poof.  This was a major snowstorm that just shifted north only by two counties.  This is where we said it would be a couple of days ago.  Then, we thought it was taking direct aim on the city and even though it did hit, the bullseye ended up just a few miles away.

It looks like 1 to 2 inches here in south Raytown.  I have not been outside to take a measurement yet.

Good call on the storm....  You nailed it on Monday saying that heaviest snow would fall just to the north and west.  And that is where it fell.  You made the adjustment like NWS yesterday when you thought the heaviest would fall across the metro area.  But, then you made the adjustment at eight last night saying that the heaviest would just fall to the north and west.  And that is where it fell.

Many people were impacted by the severe weather last night in AR, KY, and TN.  I haven't had a chance to check out websites to see what the actual damage was last night..  Take a moment to think about what happened down to the south.

Poofdragon,

I am not being defensive.  It really didn't go poof.  It only goes poof when it falls apart and dies out.  This storm produced exactly what I thought it would produce, but not in the exact locations we predicted yesterday.

Gary & Team:

I have been lurking for some time. This is my first post. I moved here in 2005 after living in Wisconsin for 31 years. Your weather team is as good or better at weather prediction as any TV weather staff I have seen including in the Milwaukee market where I lived for the last 16 years of my time in Wisconsin.

Obviously, I am quite acquainted with snow storms. One thing I learned years ago is that the exact track and intensity of snow storms is difficult to predict because they are highly dynamic weather events subject to many influences.

I believe your forecast for this storm was generally pretty accurate but, as I would observe, this storm did not intensify as much as anticipated. I could see this when I went to bed at 10:00pm last night. Generally, from my time in Wisconsin, I believe Kansas City is too far south to receive "many" significant snow events and if the area does receive a 12"+ event, it is indeed a rare. In case anyone is interested, here is today's forecast for my old hometown of Milwaukee:

Today: Periods of snow. The snow could be heavy at times. Some thunder is also possible. High near 33. Breezy, with a northeast wind around 29 mph. Chance of precipitation is 100%. Total daytime snow accumulation of 10 to 16 inches possible.

Please keep up the high quality work!

Bob

-------------

Bob,

Thanks and welcome to the blog.  I can't even imagine having a forecast like that one.  This storm never really intensified, until right now as it is leaving and heading towards your hometown.

Gary and the Weather Team,
Thanks for all of your hard work and sleepless nights. I watched Gary on 1442 at 7 last night and he was telling all of us about the possibility of 6" widespread over the Metro. I watched him again at 9 and could see the disappointment on his face and hear it in his voice to tell us that the track had moved north and the 6" widespread was not going to happen. This had to be terribly disheartening for all of you - it's like telling your kids they can't go to a party after you've told them it's okay.

Please keep doing what you are doing and the way you are doing it! You are still the best!

I think everyone has done a great job trying to predict the impossible. As I tell my students everyday, things change and you have to learn to adjust.  As for the snow, I'm waiting for it to stop before I go measure. Snow is still coming down, being that it started snowing around 7:15 it has been snowing for about 14 hours. Truly amazing. I wouldn't be surprise if there is already 10 inches on the ground. I'm sorry for those in the south who didn't get as much, I'm more than willing to share. It makes for a long day when one has to shovel drives and sidewalks for older family members. I'll let you know snow totals once it stops snowing, unless I decide to go out sooner because of curiosity.

Snow winding down here in SW Lawrence-sun trying to peak out but it is blowing pretty good here.
