Here comes the arctic front!

Make sure to watch NBC Actions News weekends at 8am, 5 & 10pm for the latest weather information!

The weekend will feature two very different air masses across the region.  Today we will enjoy a mild day with temperatures around 10 degrees above average.  Highs should range from the 40s north to the 50s south.  If the clouds stay away, even Kansas City will be in the 50-53 degree range.  An arctic front that is cutting thru the northern Plains and upper Midwest this morning will arrive with a blast of cold air. Behind the front lows will drop into the single digits and teens across the region tonight, and then temps will only rebound into the 20s on Sunday!

Below is the surface map from 7am Saturday.  Notice the front is in north central Nebraska.  Also, look at the gusty winds in North Dakota with the air temperatures below zero!  Much of central North Dakota is also under a Blizzard Warning due to blowing snow and reduced visibilities.

temps9.gif

The departure of the arctic air will be a huge key to our Monday forecast as a disturbance and moisture will return to the region.  This could lead to anything from freezing rain/drizzle, rain, or a mix...or all of the above!  The LRC continues to amaze me and Gary blog yesterday recapped the 45 day forecast very well.  Make sure to check out the blog if you missed it yesterday!  We still have a couple of storms ahead so this week should be fun!  Have a great Saturday and make sure to let me know how you like our new weekend morning show.  Finally a forecast you can depend on to start off your weekend mornings!

Right now clear skies with a white ground still here in St. Joe, did loose some snow depth yesterday, but it is still pretty thick, it will be interesting to see how much more we lose today before that front arrives.  The visible shows the snow pack really well and the low clouds racing south along that arctic boundary moving south... the ride continues;) ************** The arctic front is racing south. Nick you are right it is 34 already at 1030 hrs  we will lose more snow but not all of it.  Waiting to see what occurs Monday.  Going to go to the store tonite just to be on the safe side.   The wind does not appear to be but around 10 mph now.  I m going to wait until the afternoon data comes out before I get any expecations for Monday.

Big issue is snow piles clogging sewers.  last nite some streets were iced because of that.<<<<40.8 inches and holding>>>>> *********** Thanks for the report! Monday looks interesting with a warm to our south again. Might be another day with thunderstorms within or close to the area producing a little bit of everything! I don't think you'll lose all your snow today. Still a pile here and there in KC. Jeremy

Happy Saturday Jeremy,
So nice to see the sun shining, and have it be above freezing!   I'm with you Kristi, I can't wait for a decent warmup.  All these little snow events we've had are getting old.   A couple inches, enough to make life a real pain, but not enough to shut things down.
I am wondering something.  We've had so many small events this year, and each time the city dumps tons and tons of salt on the roads.  I have to wonder at what point all that salt starts effecting the water quality and ground (and plants & trees) surrounding the roads.  Any thoughts anyone?

this might be a good time to bring back my long un- answered question of,

why heavy snow bands set up from northeast to southwest instead of vertically.

Which therefore makes the differentiating factor of how much snow will fall, be in long narrow bands that extend west to east. meaning in a matter of 50 miles north or south, you may get nothing or a foot.

whereas if the bands of snow went from north to south, you would see something like, olathe getting 1 inch and warrensburg getting 6 inches...and most likely st joseph, kansas city, and Harrisonville would all get the same amount. *************** Brent, I'll answer your question this afternoon when I have more time at work. Just stopping in for a second. Look for the answer between 4-5pm. Good question. Jeremy

Bill in Lawrence *************** Bill, With the winds turning to the NW the highs will likely stay in the 40s on the north side of KC, maybe some 50s over the south side. The arctic front is still to the north though. It is located where dew points drop off by 10 degrees within about 50 miles of each other on the obs. Just a little trough out ahead of the main front turning winds to the NW right now. Jeremy

Chfs327, what exactly is the weather going to do in the KC metro area on Monday?  And what exactly for Thursday?

Snowman Glad you ask. Monday at around noon time it will begin as sleet till bout 5 then change over to FRZ rain till about 3AM then change to a Light snow.

In the Ice storm we get bout 1/2 inch to .75 inch of FRZ rain/ ice on the powerlines

Thursday it will be alot like last tuesdays storm. The Advancing coldfront combined with a Low coming in from the four corners will track above us. Here in KC will only get around 4-6 inches but in St.joe will get around 8-10 inches again.

With that storm there is a possibility of a Blowing snow advisory as winds will pick up from the northwest from 25-35 MPH with Gusts up to around 50 MPH

Thanks so much!!! I've got it now!! Should have paid closer attention before I posted eh!!!! Concordia, Kansas is at 44 at 18Z so we have a while to go-looks like the front is getting close to Lincoln, Nebraska-I think???

Speaking of Nebraska: you can really see how this colder air is heading in a more east trajectory than banking up against the Rockies-Ogolla, Nebraksa is at 50 while North Platte is at 33-both are about the same in Latitude but North Platte is about 50 miles East-pretty wild!!! Another is that Imperial, Nebraska is at 50 and Thedford is at 23-Thedford is about 100-150 miles North East of Imperial-just wild!!!!

Awesome to follow this front as there is it for sure has a kick-Iowa is really going into the deep freeze!!! Oh, we're currently at 42 and still slowly climbing-snow is trying to hang on in the areas with out sun, but the old Iglo which is on the south side of the house in full sun is taking it on the chin today LOL!!!

Have a great afternoon

Yeah...like I just said we have talked about this possibility for somewhere in the viewing area for days.  The temp forecast has changed, but we've always mentioned that a front would be close and that the precip. type was a big concern.  Last night Gary was forecasting the coldest temps for Monday of anyone in KC.  That was and still is the case as I type.  I'm making some graphics right now to show in regards to the freezing rain threat for Monday.  It certainly does exist.  I'll update the blog later today with more info.

Also, this is either storm #5 or 6 of the 4-7 that Gary was forecasting.  I think Monday lines up with December 22 if I remember correctly.  The LRC continues to work.

Okay, here's a question I've wondered for a few years....

I've always heard that 32 is the freezing mark and always believed that once the temp gets below 32 it will snow instead of rain, but in past years I've realized this is NOT the case.  Why is that?  What is the "freezing" mark, if it doesn't turn the rain into snow?  I guess that just means it will turn it into freezing rain/ice?

Also...what is the difference in freezing rain and just rain?  Just...really cold rain?

And why do you have Monday's high at 26, but rain instead of snow all day?

I'm very interested in this and have been curious about it for a long time...  I feel very stupid but I need to find the answers somehow! :\

Rock,
If it is snow...  There's a warm layer in the air between too cold air masses in the atmosphere.  There's just no chance for the droplet to melt.  I am not sure of what the temp in the atmosphere has to be for snow or sleet to occur.  I am sure someone could answer that.

Freezing rain occurs when there is a shallow layer of cold air near the surface with  warm air above it.  The rain freezes on contact.

If the air is 32 degrees or below from the clouds all the way to the ground precipitation will snow...It depends on where the cold air is...Freezing rain develops when falling snow encounters a layer of warm air and melts then it encounters a layer of cold air at the surface, but does not have time to refreeze and and freezes when it comes in contact with an object that has temps below freezing...It sleets when the cold air is a little thicker and the rain has time to refreeze into ice pellets....When the warm air is from the clouds to the ground, it falls as plain rain.

You also said: Also...what is the difference in freezing rain and just rain?  Just...really cold rain?

I told yo what frz rain was above and what rain was...a cold rain is just plain rain that is cold or falls when it is cooler outside.

Yeah this has been one of the best winters in years. We may actually hit 20 inches of snow at KCI this winter. Been a while.

I would say we are a shoe-in for at least 20".

This looks like a winter wx or freezing rain advisory type not major ice storm.

Hi,

I just wanted to say that about 1 1/2 miles south of St. Joseph and about 3.5 miles south of 36 Hwy both my Dad and my Sister measured 10 to 10.25 inches at different places after the Tuesday into Wednesday Storm.  That was on top of about 1.5 inches of frozen slush from early Tuesday morning.

Also back on Dec. 22nd we had 8.5 inches of snow.  I am not sure the disparity in snowfall reports, but places south of 36 highway had 10 inches form the last storm.

Feb. 14-15 could be interesting...about 54 days after Dec. 22!

Okay...I think everyone knows you called for a major ice storm.  Let's see what happens.  This evening I'll write a blog discussing Monday.

Look what's on the horizon for Valentine's Day...a Valentine from Mother Nature...another storm!
