A cold February 12th & seasonal snowfall totals

Good morning,

How much snow have you had this season?  I have a list, below, that we will add your totals to, if you have been keeping track.

It is lightly snowing as a weak upper level disturbance moves by and we still have some lingering low level moisture.  There has been a dusting and it is blowing around on the roads.  This disturbance will move by around 10 AM, and once it does the air will start sinking which will lead to, hopefully, the breakup of the clouds.

Look at the two maps below:

GFS coming in.gif

A storm is being forecast, by all of the computer models, to come into the west coast and then for it to dive south southeast.  It is then supposed to close off into an upper low and track well south of Kansas City.  That energy coming across the west coast tonight is what ends up diving south southeast.  Exactly what will happen with this storm?   The energy that is being used to create this storm doesn't come into the west coast until tonight.  There is still a chance that we will get a significantly different solution, even though there hasn't been one computer model that has shown this upper low to get close enough to bring us a winter storm.

GFS closer.gif

Let's see what happens and trends on the models today and we will update the blog later this afternoon.

Seasonal snowfall totals as of February 12th:

  • St. Joseph, MO:  40.8"
  • Fort Leavenworth, KS:  33.3"
  • Topeka, MO:  29.3"
  • Platte City:  28.0"
  • Cameron, MO:  26.9"
  • Parkville, MO (west of I-435):  26.0"
  • NBC Action News (east side of The Plaza):  19.3"
  • KCI airport:  18.7"
  • Olathe, KS (Near Olathe North High School):  17.0"
  • Overland Park, KS:  16.4"
  • Merriam, KS:  14.9"
  • Grandview, MO:  13.6"
  • Blue Springs, MO:  13.1"
  • Pleasant Hill, MO (NWS):  12.2"
  • Kansas City, MO (Near Bannister Mall):  10.3"
  • Harrisonville, MO:  9.1"

Have a great day!  I have a big chest workout this morning with my trainer so I will be sore later today.  I must get motivated.

What does this storm do according to the LRC? Isn't this the storm that moved through the metro last time?

Light flurries at 87th and I-35.  14*

Yes, this storm was more progressive and didn't get caught deep down to the south the last time through the cycle.  And, it hit us with a big storm.

Goodness Gary you must not sleep too much... I'm rather sure you are at work til atleast 10:35 every evening then probably dont get home til around 11 and probably do a few things before you sleep at 12 (at the earliest) then I see a new blog on here at 7am! I'm rather sure you've looked over models, thought out what you were going to blog about, and did other routines just to wake yourself up!

Seems like Thursday night and Friday may be one of those deals we may not have a good idea about until this system is about here.. Seems like a tricky one

Jon,

I get to sleep right around midnight, and then I am live on Newsradio 980 KMBZ at 6 AM.  So, this is why I cherish the calm weekends so I can catch up on my sleep.

Gary,

We had a "skiff" [a term Jeremy will know] of snow overnight here in Overland Park. Wow! That "energy" really takes a big dive south. This would lead one to believe that our weather destiny lies beyond this storm. Enjoy your workout.

Bob,

I don't think there is ever a way to "enjoy" the workout, but I will feel good once I'm done.  Thanks!

Friends,

For those of you who are interested in reading about a famous midwestern snowstorm on this quiet Kansas City winter weather day, here is a link to a well-executed write-up on the development on the big Midwestern Blizzard of 1978:

http://www.crh.noaa.gov/dtx/stories/blizzard1978.php

The following is an excerpt from the text of the article:

"The phasing of two distinct jet streams aloft proved to be the key as to the subsequent strength and massive extent of the storm. A very strong and energetic Arctic impulse surged almost due south and plowed the Arctic front through the Northern Plains late on the 24th. At the same time, another very strong upper wind impulse surged south through southern Arizona. These two jet streaks made up the larger North American jet stream as a huge upper ridge of high pressure along the West Coast of the U.S. diverted the powerful Pacific Jet north into Northern Canada. This northern jet (containing a wind max of 110 knots) then dove due south, like on a giant roller coaster, across the western U.S. as the second, subtropical jet (with an even stronger wind max of 130 knots) surged across southwestern states. On Wednesday (25th), a deepening area of low pressure made its way east across the Gulf States into Georgia by evening (surface/500mb). Meanwhile, across the north, the Arctic front barreled east across the Upper Midwest into the Western Lakes by Wednesday evening."

This storm preceded the more well-known northeastern blizzard of 1978 by several days. The storm has been described as a "snow hurricane" by some meteorologists. The lowest barometric pressure measured during this storm was 28.21". Wind gusts were clocked as high as 100mph on a ore frieghter on Lake Erie at the height of the storm while near hurricane force wind gusts were recorded as many as 700 miles away from the low center. At the time, I was living in Madison, Wisconsin. We were on the western edge of the area affected by the storm. We only had 6.1" of snow from the storm but, the snow was accompanied by howling winds of 50-75mph. These are strongest winds I have ever observed during a snowstorm.

Enjoy!

Interesting how the patterns change from one year to the next. As last year these totals were reversed with the south side having the higher totals. Also, For those of us that are longing to get back in our yards and say goodbye to old man winter, can you give any time frame when your spring forecast is coming?

Thanks
Jeff

With respect to the Midwestern Blizzard of late January 1978 that Bob in OP referenced, I was living in Connecticut at the time and I can recall this storm well because there it was the one "warm" storm we had in the January-February time frame that year.  Prior to this storm, in the first half of January, we had two nor-easters that dropped six inches of snow each, with at least 1/2 inch of sleet and freezing rain on top of each six inch snow.  The second of these two storms resulted in the collapse of the roof on the then-new Hartford Civic Center.  Fortunately, the collapse happened in the early morning, and no one was inside.  After these two snow-ice storms, we had about 14 inches of plain snow from a major nor'easter on about January 20.  Then we had the warm storm that caused the Midwestern Blizzard, with 1-2 inches of rain accompanied by temps as high as 60 degrees that melted all but about 4 inches of the snow and ice pack and southerly winds gusting as high as 60 to 70 mph.  This big warm storm was followed on Feb. 6-7 by the "Blizzard of '78" in southern New England, which dropped 20 inches of snow at my house.  That was a very active stretch of weather!

Hi - The Dog doesn't have a snow total, but I thought a total liquid precip from this last little event would excite everyone - .02" - NOT EXCITING.  But...it has been a plentiful year for Mr Rain-Gauge at my house, and I am thankful for that.  However, I would like to see more sun than gray the rest of the way - you all can have your snows, but please let's have more sun in between, and less Arctic air.

That being said, my non-scientific dog-brain tells me that early to mid-March should be busy, and that could actually bring us the heaviest (tho wetter) precip of the season - and probably snow - tho the north country should get the brunt, or down towards Springfield - that's what's happened so far this season, tho there is always the occasional aberration to any pattern.  We in Blue Springs should receive some decent totals liquid-wise in the gauge, and I think some thunder is quite possible during this stretch.  Look for some nasty outbreaks of severe weather to our south and southeast, in Oklahoma, Texas, Arkansas, Kentucky, Tennessee and also a bit further south.  Probably another tornado outbreak sometime in the period mentioned, unfortunately.

Of course, I could be totally wrong, but "I think not", as the Brits say!!!

Later,
Dog

We had one of our worst ice storms in March.  How many here remember the ice storm in March 1984?  I do.  I was a freshman at KU at the time.  We were just coming off spring break when the ice storm hit.

Also, we've had our heaviest snowfall total in 24 hours occur in March.  We can get accumulating snows in April.

March and April can be very active months here.

Please do not say that winter is over...  Winter is far from over here in KC.
