Rain, Snow, & Wind!

Make sure to watch NBC Action News at 5 & 10pm Saturday and also Sunday morning at 8am for the latest on the weekend storm!

The storm is just beginning!  The updated warnings and advisories just came out and there have been some changes sine this morning.  Areas near the Iowa border are now under a Winter Storm Warning with rain and freezing rain expected tonight before transitioning to snow early Sunday.  The metro area and much of the viewing area (excluding Johnson, Pettis, Bates, & Henry Counties) is under a Snow and Blowing Snow Advisory for late tonight and into Sunday afternoon.  Rain, possibly a little freezing is possible tonight before the transition to snow occurs Sunday morning between 6-10am across the area.  Here in the metro the changeover will likely be somewhere in the neighborhood of 7:30-10am?  Once the transition occurs we can expect a period of moderate to heavy snow!  It should be pretty impressive!

The upper level low is still back in far western Texas.  Below is the water vapor image from around 4pm.  Notice the moisture flowing into Kansas and Missouri.  This will translate into a steady rain this evening and tonight.  A few thunderstorms are also possible.  Rain totals will be around 1-1.50" in Kansas City and some 2" totals a county or two south of the metro.  Areas from Kansas City to Ottawa, KS to Clinton, MO and north to Sedalia, MO remain in a Flood Watch for this evening and tonight.  Rapid runoff could create flooding in low lying areas and rivers and streams that are prone to flooding.

The 'L' on the map indicates where the ULL is located in Texas. The energy diving into the northern Plains and the ULL over Texas will begin to phase on Sunday.  This will create a very intense storm.  The phasing will occur after the low passes to our east.

Once the storm passes winds will increase to 20-35 mph out of the north-northwest and this will create blowing and drifting in open areas.  Travel conditions will be the worst from around Kansas City and points north.

Areas under the Winter Storm Warning could see 0.10-0.20" of ice accumulation this evening into tonight.  This would mainly be on trees, powerlines, vehicles, and elevated surfaces.  If temperatures remain in the 31-33 degree range then most roads should remain wet...but certainly watch out for some icy areas.

The snowfall forecast has only been tweaked a little bit.  Snow totals around the metro will likely range from 1-4".  Best chance of 3-4" will come in locations like Weston, KCI, western KCK.  Downtown KC back to Lenexa should be in the neighborhood of 2-3", with 1-2" in Lee's Summit and Blue Springs.  Areas farther south like Harrisonville around 1", and Clinton and Sedalia seeing trace amounts to around a half inch.

Farther north from Weston to around St. Joe towards Chillicothe and Trenton a band of 4"+ could take shape.  I think the highest total around the region will end up in the neighborhood of 4-6".  Far northwest Missouri the totals will drop to about 2-3".  Since the track of the storm isn't set in stone the snow totals can and will likely change some.  But at the moment I am confident that the highest totals will once again occur north of KC.

Please keep you rain reports coming in...I'm reading them all!  Let's have fun and enjoy this storm!

Dewpoints in the local area range from 28 to 30 at this time and have been slowly rising all day.  All air temps are above freezing.  If the trend of rising dewpoints continues, there is really very little chance of any freezing rain in the immediate KC area tonight.  It might be raining and 33 degrees in some places, which is close but no ice.  Is it possible that some untreated roads, sidewalks and parking lots might become a bit slick because the ground is still frozen?

KellyofIndependence commented that "for a couple of degrees, this could have been 'the' big one for the Metro."  Yes, it could have been a big ice storm if it had been a few degrees colder.  Right now, we are in the part of the storm where "warm air advection" is taking place.  What this means is that there is a lot of warm, moist air moving in here on the front side of the storm.  If the air temperature was 30 degrees, we would have a big ice storm tonight because all the precipitation would still be in the form of rain or sleet.  We still would get only a few inches of snow out of the storm as the deformation zone comes across tomorrow.

Temps may still rise as the low moves NE.  The air temp will near the dew point as the precip. starts or becomes heavy.  As the dewpoint rises the air temp will stay equal or just above it.  So temps will be steady or rise a degree or two in most areas.  The rain is also falling thru a warmer column.

Jeremy,

Thanks for the updates today.  I'm really starting to think we shouldn't need them though.  All we really need to know is that if a storm comes our way and we want to watch it, just remember two things, 1) If there is alot of moisture in KC, it will defenitely be rain, and if there is alot of snow with the storm, it will defenitely go to the north and west of the city.  That should be the only two rules you need to follow for the rest of the winter....  Oh well, better luck next year for those of us that love the snow I guess....

Temps have dropped slightly in some areas due to a little bit of evaporative cooling associated with the onset of the rain, but as f00dl3 stated, the air aloft over Kansas City is very warm, so the rain falling to the surface will also be warm and it will help warm things a little bit, or keep things from getting colder, at the surface as we go through the night.  Tomorrow morning is when the colder air begins to arrive.

And a quick question (that I THINK I already know the answer to but not sure) but how does the dewpoint effect the type of precip that falls?

*************
Anyone have any thoughts?

************

Evaporational cooling can take place as precipitation falls and evaporates.  So...if the air temp above the ground several thousand feet is 34 degrees and the dewpoint is 25...the evaporation will moisten the atmosphere, but also help to drop the air temp.  Thus cooling the column and producing snow.  This is one example of the dewpoint being a key.  If it was 33 over 33 right now I wouldn't be very worried about freezing rain.  Since we are either 33 or 32 over 30 in most spots I'm a little nervous that some areas could see freezing rain.  Then again the opposite effect may take place where warmer air aloft is pushed down to the surface with the heavy precip.

The air temp can never be lower than the dew point...but can be equal to it.

tnichols47, it's a complicated answer.  Dewpoint is an absolute measure of how much moisture is in the air.  The key point is that the air temperature can not fall below the dewpoint temperature.  So if the dewpoint is above freezing, it's safe to say you will not see any freezing rain.  You will probably just have rain.  However, you might see snow, if the air temp and dewpoint temp are almost the same and both are just above freezing, AND the air aloft is sufficiently cold to produce snow all the way to the ground.  If the dewpoint is below freezing, however, you can have any type of freezing or frozen precipitation, if the air temp is also at or below freezing.  One other important point is that when it starts to precipitate, the difference between the air temperature and the dewpoint temperature will decrease.  The dewpoint typically rises, while the air temperature falls.  This phenomenon is called "evaporative cooling."  Evaporative cooling can cause an air temperature that is above freezing when precipitation begins to fall below freezing.

For example, at an air temp of 33 and a dewpoint of 33, it might be rain or snow (or sleet).  But it will not be freezing rain.
-- At an air temp of 32 and a dewpoint of 32, it might be sleet, snow, or freezing rain.
-- If it is not precipitating and 34 degrees and the dewpoint is 20 degrees, then it starts raining or snowing, the temperature will likely drop below freezing as a result of evaporative cooling.  The dewpoint will likely rise above 20 degrees, but stay at or below the air temperature.

As I said, it's kind of complicated.  The issue for tonight is we have a situation where the air temperature and dewpoint temperature are both close to freezing, and some evaporative cooling has taken place.  For example, at New Century Air Center in Olathe, the current temp is 33 and the dewpoint is 32.  Will the air temp fall to 32 and cause some freezing rain, or will the dewpoint rise to 33 and prevent any freezing rain?  That's the crux of the problem tonight.

A dry slot is kind of forming - although as the low moves by the precip in western Kansas will overspread the region.

Maybe this will give the column time to cool down more????

So Jeremy you think little freezing rain mix in but not all that much mainly rain, what time will complete switch freezing rain before snow

**************

With temps only 1-2 degrees away from freezing rain it is very tough to pinpoint when changeovers may occur tonight or if we switch for a time and then go back to rain.  That's why I mentioned a chance of some frz. rain, but mainly rain overnight.  The dewpoint in Olathe at both stations is 32 and 34 in Harrisonville and Knob Knoster.  That is a good sign to keep it rain.

However, the area of precipitation over western Kansas is sagging more to the southeast then it is to the east.... and at this time the snow producing part of the storm almost looks as if it wants to "split" off and totally miss Kansas City.... weird. Hopefully as the storm passes south it will pull this moisture up northward, but radar trends are not pretty right now.

wow an ice storm seems to be setting up.....north of KC

its still 32 here...no ice yet...

as one channel commonly likes to state..

"the bulk of the moisture flow from the gulf is shifting of to the east"

thats what it looks like on radar at least.

I'm just north of Mosby near Excelsior Springs. So far just a steady cold rain. I don't see any icing on our decks or trees so far.

RTMA is showing temperatures steadying across the area. very little change in the last hour. wet bulb seems to have been reached....we now need to wait for the reinforcing show of cold air from the NW

I think the dew points climbing a degree or two and the temps holding steady is a good sign to avoid much freezing rain around the metro.  Still have to keep a close eye to the north.

I am at work Jeremy and can not watch the weather. I am dying to know if I will still get that possible 2 inches of rain. From the looks of the radar...I would guess to say missouri/clinton area will get most of the precip. Just curious if I am still in the loop for a big rain event.

I'd say you will end up between 0.50-1".

00z ETA/NAM has a mature surface low (990mb) tracking southeast of KC tomorrow morning, so would expect a fairly rapid transition to large bomb snowflakes. The snowfall rates could be pretty hefty once we get into that favorable spot tomorrow morning. 3-6" would be an expected snowfall for the KC Metro if one buys into the ETA/NAM model.

I am honestly thinking that I will not see more than 4" out of any single storm this winter... I am nearly convinced.

The only question mark is Gary's supposed "blizzard" in late March. I am willing to bet that it either passes north or south of Kansas City, and Kansas City has the good 'ol donut hole that mother nature has been generously providing us with this winter.

Just went back to check the 18Z models to see how they are handling the precipitation in the current six hour period.  GFS had a pretty good handle on it around this area.  The NAM overshot the precipiation amounts by a great deal.

Looks to me like the bulk of the system (a slow mover?) is now east of us and we are going to be getting the tail end or "wrap around" or whatever it's called for the rest of the evening and morning?

Is that what I am seeing on Radar shots?
