Soggy to Snowy...

Good evening everyone!  I just completed the 10pm show and really my thoughts are about the same as earlier.  Below is the radar image from the Topeka radar site.  A couple of things to note.  The dry slot that will begin to push into the metro around midnight will mean the heavy rain will give way to light rain or drizzle.  The deformation band of precipitation will then move into the area as the low begins lifting northeast.  Expect rain to transition to snow in Kansas City somewhere in the 6-9am time window...far northwest and west areas will see the change at the earlier times.

Also of note along and north of highway 36 tonight the temps are colder and some ice accumulation is possible.  Probably under 0.20" in most areas.  Be careful traveling north tonight!

Make sure to watch NBC Action News Today starting at 8am Sunday for the latest on the storm!  We will have some incredible sky view cameras to show as the snow pushes in!

Please send along your snow totals on Sunday!  Rest up...Sunday morning should be fun!

Has there been any research to average winter storm tracks done? I know I can probably spend 5 months gathering data from different weather stations around the midwest, but I was wondering if there's a pattern that occurs. I know last year all the storms that produced prolific snow were to the south, and this year they tend to be mostly to the north. I remember back in 2005 Kansas City metro had a 10" snow.

It's almost like there is some setup that during some winters makes storms track one way while during other winters makes storms track a different way... could this be related to SSTs? I am not saying that our weather is totally dependent on El Nino / La Nina , and I am not discounting the LRC.

Perhaps mean sea surface temperatures help to develop the LRC during the late summer months when the tropics are transporting the moisture via tropical storms and hurricanes north from the ITZC over the warmer and/or cooler SSTs.

Well, according to my outside thermometer it's just a fraction above 32 degrees in Lee's Summit right now. It'll be interesting to see if it stays stable or drops enough for something besides rain to fall tonight.

I get so frustrated with the "big set up" for these "snow storms" and then the HUGE let down just before they are predicted to happen.  I am always so disappointed with winters here and the folks attemepting to predict the "storms"

It is raining buckets here in La Cygne right now!

Woke me up... coming down so fast that it is overflowing the gutters. I can't believe I'm going to say this... but this time I wish it was just hurry and turn to snow. Ground can't handle anymore rapid moisture. There will be flooding down to the south of me. Hope my little town doesn't get cut-off again by damaging flood waters.

I'm with you Farmgirl, if we have to have it....at least snow would slow down the inevitable flooding.  It's been raining steady in Paola for quite some time.  The dogs didn't want to go out, can't blame them, it's a swamp in our yard.  We got an estimate on doing the whole backyard in concrete yesterday, we're going to do it, one giant patio.  I'm convinced it's always going to be rainy in Miami Co. and I'm done with the mud.  By April, we will have a cement yard with minimal grassy (?) areas.  Quite an expense....all due to the nasty weather we get in Kansas.  Retirement in the desert is looking better all the time.

THUNDERSNOW in here in SW Topeka during the last 30 minutes.  We have heavy snow and the wind is starting to pick up. Everything is already white and looks like we have about 1/4 inch accumulation.  The temp at my house is 30.9F.  The radar shows heavy precip in our area.  (oh, and good morning!)  Mike

Yep...the transition is occurring.  I have 6-9am on the news last night, so closer to the earlier window.  A steady snow for a little while, then maybe lighter before the deformation band arrives.

Good Morning Weather Team!!!

Currently sitting at 31 degrees-we had the change over at about 5:00 this morning-currently moderate snow and everything, including roads are covered. Radar I think looks pretty good-will be interesting to see how long this can go-if that Upper Level Low could just slow down-compared to how slow it moved for 3 days I think it saw an ice cream truck or something last night-man it took off!!!!

Just east of Vivion Road & North Oak Trafficway I can see it snowing from the apartment building's flood lights and cars have a thin layer of snow on them.  I don't know if it's coming down as all snow or if it's mixed with rain at this point.

Here's hoping we get on the higher side of the snow prediction.  [crosses fingers]

Snowing steadily and completely snow-covered - ground, cars, streets, etc - at I-29 and 64th. You said 6-9am, Jeremy, but I'm surprised it is happening in the early part of that window.

I woke at about 5:30 this morning to rain and by 6 it had turned into large heavy snowfall in South OP. I would estimate pushing an inch so far. 135th street was covered nicely between Metcalf & Mission. It appeared south of 135th had more snow. Still coming down but not as heavy or as big.

I think the Farmer's Almanac called for a sizeable winter storm event in the month of February
