1 PM update....will it ever warm up?

Good afternoon everyone,

Question of the day:  Do you want winter to continue, or are you ready for spring?  We will have the poll results on the 10 PM newscast tonight!  I will ask this on the air as well.

A strong Arctic front is now moving our way.  It is still way up in northern South Dakota, but look where it is forecast to be at 9 PM tonight:

This really is one of the strongest fronts of the season and we all get to experience it later tonight and Wednesday.  The potential for some snow is there on Thursday, Friday, and Sunday, Monday night into Tuesday.  The strongest looking storm appears to be Monday's set up.  I will go into much more detail on all of these possibilities on NBC Action Weather Plus this afternoon, and then on NBC Action News at 5, 6, and 10 PM tonight.  I will also try to update the blog this evening.

Hey warmer weather fans......there is hope next week.  Looking at the weather pattern just past the 7 day forecast period we see a very strong possibility of a more substantial warm up later next week.  We are due, don't you think?   Just something to think about.

Have a great afternoon.

Gary

Gary,
This time of year clearly distinguishes the climate of the Midwest from the Plains. The average high temperatures in the Midwest are about 10F cooler than us.  Also, low temperatures in areas of northern and central MN were colder than -25F last night. Winter temperatures there have been below average for the first time in quite a few winters.

Gary,

It appears that we are going to fall short of today's predicted high temperature ahead of the arctic front. I am presently reading 31 degrees. I will be curious to hear more detail about these upcoming storm events as the models become more definitive. One difference that I have noticed about arctic front arrival here in Kansas City is that these fronts typically come through this area "dry" with only a passing flurry or two. When I lived in Wisconsin, the arrival of arctic fronts was usually accompanied by a band of snow just behind the front. These arctic front snow bands could drop anywhere from a dusting to 1 - 3". I am sure there is a reason for this. Please keep us posted. Thanks!

FOR SLEET TO MIX IN WITH THE SNOW OVER AREAS SOUTH OF HIGHWAY 50

Gary, while i will continue to go round and round with you regarding the finer features of the LRC, I think we both still agree strongly that there is a cycle or a pattern of some sort.  That said, as you talk about the polar push and the warm up coming later next week, here is something that I had put out from JANUARY 13th!

[click my name for details]

"...look for something on the 20/22nd. This could bring more of a mix to snow with amounts of liquid precipitation being up to a quarter inch. This storm will bring another push of Canadian air dropping us again under average temperatures.

...We will experience cooler than normal temperatures until around the 24th where we begin to warm up again."

Unless I have a crystal ball..which I don't, then without some sort of cycle - this kind of DETAIL would be impossible.

All that said, I don't follow upper level maps at all, so maybe there is some crazy chance that the surface analysis method works afterall.

LOL - this concludes my daily pot stirring.

------------------

Scott,

LMOL!  I know this will drive you nuts, but of course the surface maps will work.  The surface is cycling, but as defined by the upper levels.  As I have said all along you are using a variation of the LRC to make your forecasts.  Doesn't this make sense to you?  The big debate we have is when the cycle begins.  You say August, I say October or November.

Let's keep winter around as long as possible.  I don't look forward to spring because then allergies start soon followed by heat and humidity and bugs and the like.  If I were a bear I'd hibernate from May through September or something.  The only bright spot to spring for me is thunderstorms but I'll gladly give that up for the comfort of colder weather and more winter storms.

Stormdog said:

Hi all - Stormdog votes for Spring - a no-brainer for those of you who have endured my anti-winter posts this winter.  While we haven't had a lot of snow here, we've had a severe winter in terms of cold and Arctic airmasses - bad on the gas bill, altho my highest so far has been $97.00 (the trick was that we had insulation blown into the attic - we had an R value of 15 sloping down to 2 above the kitchen - we had the equivalent of R49 (R35 is the Fed recommendation, but for an addl 60.00 dollars we got the premium)  This has already paid for itself over the last 2-3 years, for what it does is break the convective cycle in the house - warm air rises, unless there is insulation above, and when it does, cold air from the outside is drawn inside, and so the heater works more.  I am not owner or have interest in insulation companies, but this is so important for all to realize, that with an $860 or so dollar investment, the bills can be thirded!!!  I kid you not ( my square footage overall is perhaps 1500 sq ft.)

I too would like thunderstorms, but I am not sure we are ready for the Spring the Dog thinks is about to happen.  Already, many tornado outbreaks in the SE, multiple deaths, and not a few long track twisters, including one in SW MO in January already... But...this pattern IS suggestive of a violent Spring, I fear.  I hope I am wrong, wrong, wrong, and we see only a lot of nice heavy storms, no hail, tornadoes.

Still, get ready all, in case The Dog is right (I've chased and observed severe weather in Oklahoma for 20 years, so I think I know of what I speak)

Cheers,
The Dog

It is a wind chill advisory to the north.  This has the potential to be a significant storm, but it is just a little bit too weak.  We will be monitoring this closely.

Well for me... this winter has been so active, I know once its gone... it gone.  I think this is the big snowy winter that I have been waiting for since I was a kid, it seemed like almost every year that I can remember the winter ended up above average temps. and below ave. snow and I have always thought to myself that one year we will see the other shoe drop, well this year seems like the year it has, so I will take this winter as long as it wants to stay.   As for the next few days, well one thing is the NWS has issued a wind chill advisory for us, the first time they have done so for St. Joe this winter!!  and the next set up look weird on the 500mbar progs. it is like there are two vorts playing "chicken" with each other as one from the northern branch swings down as a "clipper" and the other one swings up from the southern branch at about the same time  they also show the potential for snow to not be too heavy BUT they have the potential lingering on and off for quite a while.  The final solution I'm afraid is far from showing its self with the very precarious interaction between the northern and southern flows.

Thing is, most of the over-posters are of the WINTER variety. I don't see nearly as many posts in the summer. True, as someone said, after a time of some extreme lots of folks wish for the other extreme. The Dragon wishes for a more SoCal kind of place. Or maybe Albuquerque. They get 300 days of sunshine a year, but they also have 4 nice distinct seasons, none of which is too extreme. Snow? Sure. Storms? Occasionally. Not too bad.

For those who are about to start writing something about "Why dontcha just move there, fire breather" I can say that a move is in the Dragon's future. Mrs. Dragon was just offered a position in a city not so far from here, albeit the wrong direction. But it is one that could be a stepping stone toward a future Westerly move. In any case, the Dragon's days on the blog are numbered. You snow haters will have to find another fire breather to keep those nasty flakes away. Hey DrySlot...you've got friends dontcha?  ;-)

Can't wait to hear how the LRC/P thing pans out.

I don't think they have what it takes to knock me down. I've been training a lifetime to take on a monster blizzard, go toe to toe with it, and say "go ahead, make my day!" I've gone for 10 mile walks in single digits, heavy snow, and strong winds. It was like a walk in the park. One of these days I want to see some fangs coming out of the clouds, growling like a hungry lion and snowing so hard it knocks me down. But I will rise and say, "you're not that bad, you're not that bad." Now that gets my heart pumping just thinking about it. Besides looking for job openings up in Iowa I may have to look at a trip to Mt. Everest to satisfy my need to some wicked snow!! I say let's find out who the biggest winter weather fan is in all of Kansas City. Heck, I will take on challengers from all of the U.S. For years I collected any articles from papers from KC, Des Moines, USA Today, etc. that dealt with snow or ice events, cut them out laminated them and covered the back wall of my room with them. I used to draw my own snowfall maps, color them in and keep them in chronological order to see how much snow had fallen and keep track of patterns. I did keep snowballs in individual baggies only to bring them out in July one year, yes they had become ice balls by then but I was able to manage building a small snowman and suprising the heck out of the mailman when I put it by the mailbox on a 90+ degree day. I have built igloos, snowmen, snowstadiums. I have pictures of snowdogs, snowdragons. I want to build something bigger than "snowzilla" in Alaska. I once shoveled snow for 3 hours straight. Most people would say, "o.k. I've done that before". Except that we had received about 1/4" and I proceeded to shovel snow from my sidewalk, all of my neighbors sidewalks, 1/2 of the parking lot area of the apartment complex, the street, etc. only to walk it back to my small yard, pile it up and then level it to make it look like a fresh snowfall of about 2 feet. The next day the 1/4" melted and no snow to be seen except it was great watching people go by and look at the deep snowpack in my yard and have a look of "what the heck!" I got so excited one year driving to work that I drove off the road into a ditch only to whip the car back onto the road safely. What got me so excited? Out of the corner of my eye I noticed a drift of snow that had survived a warm up that had melted all of the other snow. I have been known to dress warm, put on my headphones listening to classical music, take a lawn chair outside and sit on the porch during a snowstorm. Oh the glorious, inspirational, and majestic feelings that brings on. This is only the tip of the iceberg winter fans!
