Awesome Lunar Eclipse in progress & new data

Good evening everyone,

Are you looking at the eclipse.  It is pretty cool as the moon is passing into the Earth's shadow right now.  Go look outside!

The new data is trickling in.  And, this Thursday/Friday storm is like watching a slow motion version of one of our earlier storm systems this season.  It is just a weak version of a few of them (another example of the LRC).  So, here is what will likely happen with this storm. We will see a period of light sleet/snow between 3 AM and 9 AM on Thursday.  One band of heavier sleet/snow will move across and south of I-35 between 9 AM and 3 PM.  Then, it will taper off to freezing drizzle or snow grains (very light snowflakes) between 3 PM and 9 PM.  Then, between 9 PM Thursday and 3 PM Friday a band of snow will form with the main storm and do a weak version of what our other storm systems have done.  It will form and develop west and northwest of Kansas City, frustrating areas to the south and east. And, then it will spin by and most of us will see some minor accumulation on Friday.  Overall I am expecting 1 to 2 inches total by Friday evening.  2 to 4 inches may fall in a band north and west of KC by Friday afternoon.  There could be some changes to this forecast as we get into Thursday and Thursday night.  So, stay with NBC Action News and we'll keep you advised.

I will go over this at 10 PM tonight on NBC Action News, and we will have a timelapse and pictures of the eclipse.  Hopefully you will get a chance to watch.

Gary

I've got a ton of pictures of it, kind of a time lapse starting from about 720 and going about every 15 minutes and like you mdg when it got down to the final stages my camera just did not like that image along with trying to stand still while it's 10 degrees outside.  Maybe my camera was trying to tell me it's cold and wants to go back inside.

I didn't take any pictures..  I would have had to set up my tripod and it just too cold to stand outside for any length of time.

Why is it that stronger, more impressive, hyped storms can fizzle, split, get "dry slotted, etc. but weaker storms don't seem to suprise us by somehow waking up, grow, gain strength, and do more than what is expected? Can we just get 3" to cover up the grass for crying in a bucket!!! Cold air is in place and now we can't get the moisture, but just let the temperature get up to 33 or 34 and then we get so much rain we end up with a stinking quagmire. Hey, do you hear that? It's me screaming at the sky..."why?" I don't make this up. I really get that mad. Is there anything that can get this radar to light up like a christmas tree? I'm almost to the point of taking out the hose and just spraying my trees, lawn, and car to ice things up just to get a winter wonderland look going.

Given the extremely cold temps over the past few days, I'm thinking that even the slightest bit of sleet or snow could cause very hazardous driving conditions.

Gary--I'm also wondering, like Husky07, whether Lee's Summit will see anything "slick" between the 3am-9am window...or will it be later?  Just wondering what the schoolbus and rush hour traffic can expect in the LS area...could be hitting at a critical time???

Gary just said we're now looking at sleet tonight with freezing rain glaze through 3pm tomorrow...nothing major, but enough to possible cause travel problems...

I didn't say freezing rain!  I said light snow or sleet in the morning then changing to freezing drizzle with a light glazing on top of some light snow or sleet that fell earlier.

Gary, much more detail than usual supporting a LRC claim.  Better.

You know though..as I visualize your forecast, I see a very generic picture.  Let me explain.

The first part sounds like the leading edge of a frontal passage.  More to the north side..so, it would be a bit better banded and heavy.  As it would pass, you would then have the drytime..not necessarly dry slot, but the in between zone in most of these storms...then comes the back side...

Based on the storms this year, this is almost the norm.  So, for that and the longwave part of the LRC, you are spot on.  I think the timeframes are a bit vague with six hour windows...especially within 0-12 hrs of the precip starting, but ok...

I like the thought process described.  It makes a much more thoughtful and imaginative blog entry, and more educational and usable by the bloggers.

Good work.

----------------------

Scott,

Thanks and I could have even been more specific.  This storm is driving me a bit nuts already.  The biggest reason is that it is set up to just be a classic winter storm, but instead it is just a weak version of this year.  Maybe it will hold a surprise.  I doubt it.

Well what a winter day, first off is the cold air, man today was frigid, I don't think we made it much above ten out there today! east northeast breezes have been blowing all day long under clear skies. Another thing though that I must mention is the composition of the snow, it is rather hard and crunchy, and some areas, like under trees(where the snow had tried to melt during the event), on the sides of the streets, and in parking lots and driveways, the "snow" has become glacier like areas of ice, yes like a mini ice age here in st. Joe with mini glaciers!  Of course I did watch the lunar eclipse, pretty neat seeing the rust colored moon hanging in the sky, the only thing that kind of tainted it here was the fact that I noticed it was being obscured by what appeared to be low clouds, but I knew that we didn't have any of those, so when I went out side I saw that to our north and east something was on fire a few blocks away, you could even see a flickering orange glow, it turns out that it was someones home, I think that I heard that everyone was okay, which was a relief but it is still a horrible event and I hope that they recover quickly.
Now to the future, yes it looks like a weak, but kind of long lasting storm event the NAM really shows the snow band on Friday setting up in the "favored" area, and even as it leaves the "set up" doesn't seem to totally die, right behind the Friday event the next vort tries to move in, now it does not look impressive but allow it time to shift a bit more and who knows, especially with the NAM which has the Saturday system a little closer to being something, and then after that the next system comes marching on in, man what an LRC this is shaping up to be.

This storm already gets a big yuck from me. I had to drive home from Warrensburg to Sedalia on Highway 50 at 2 in the morning and I just made it home at 330, normally it's about a 40 minute drive. It was an ice skating rink out there and my windshield froze up about 10 times. Right now in Sedalia we are getting pretty moderate freezing rain and sleet mixed in. With the temp at 17 out it is really nasty out there. Anyone driving out there be careful it is really slick out this way.
