Thursday Morning Mess!

***Watch NBC Action News Midday at 11am with Meteorologists Brett Anthony and Jeremy Nelson for the latest on today's weather and tomorrow's snow chance!***

Good morning everyone!  I hope you had a chance to track the fast changing weather with us so far this morning on NBC Action News & on WxPlus.  There have been over 100 school closings around the region and countless accidents.  You can get around the metro area, but just allow a lot of extra time.  Conditions will improve by late morning...and especially this afternoon.

A large area of moderate to heavy sleet, with some freezing rain and sleet mixed in continues to push over the southern counties in the viewing area.  Travel conditions will worsen over areas currently under a Winter Storm Warning(Anderson, Linn, Miami, Cass, Johnson, Bates, Henry, and Pettis counties)  as the precipitation moves through over the next 1-3 hours.  Sleet/snow accumulations of 1" over the southern areas is possible, with a little glaze also from the freezing rain/drizzle.

The area of white on the radar image above represents the moderate to heavy area of mainly sleet.  Here in Kansas City the radar returns have been some snow, freezing drizzle, and a sleet mixture as of around 8:30-9am.  Areas around and north of St. Joe are mostly light snow and flurries.  And those areas have reported very few travel problems this morning.

Please send in your weather reports and we will try to pass them along on to all our viewers on-air.  We will continue to update the progress of the precipitation as the morning progresses.

I just made the drive from Ottawa, KS to Iola, KS.....uhhhh.....that was stupid.  I don't recommend driving south today.  The roads are completely ice packed and it is still sleeting moderately.  Tis' the season, though.  I am ready for spring.

Later,
Mike in Ottawa/Iola

Mike,

Thanks for keeping us updated!  Your reports down south have been a huge help!  In situations like this just a few miles away the precip. type may be different!

Here in Drexel the light to moderate sleet pellets continue to fall with occasional heavy bursts. Looks like about one half inch so far but more is on the way over the next couple of hours. Temps have been steady this morning at 18 degrees and winds are calm.

Smithville area not to bad, road crews doing a good job keeping up.  Jeremy can we expect more development to reach the Clay County are later or is it all going to remain south of the river.

I think most is along and south of I-70.  Probably a patch of flurries or freezing drizzle heads north in a few spots.  But the area south of I-70 are really the focus today.

You mentioned travel will be better this afternoon, is this system moving out and leading to no precip for awhile?  If so, what's the window?

I didn't catch any weather this morning, as a co-worker I called right when I got up offered to drive me to work if I was ready in 15 minutes.  What is the current forecast for this evening into tomorrow morning?

*********************

We should see a break begin sometime this afternoon and then a chance of light snow re-enters the forecast tonight.

Occasional sleet in Southern O.P.  Doesn't look like it has added much since earlier.  Do you think that it will get worse this afternoon, or better?  I live near 143rd and Pflumm.  Loving it!!!!  My kids were mad though that Blue Valley didn't call school:)

Tell the kids they are smarter because of it.  It will improve this afternoon.  Precip. should shift east this p.m.

When I left Lenexa at 0600 I thought I would be fine, pulling out of my garage. However, the 12 mile drive up to 435 and Stae was not fun. It wasn't the roads so much as the ice freezing on my windshield the whole drive up. Even with my defroster on max I ended up with a 6 inch circle I had to see through until I could pull over and scrape the ice. I was not the only one that had that issue this morning.

Good morning weather team...sleet is continuing around 119th and Nall.  The main streets (Metcalf, Nall, 119th, 95th) are relatively clear, but the side streets are trecherous.  Please remind everyone that the dangers also exist on driveways and sidewalks.  Fortunately, I can park my car in my garage, so I didnt have to chunk ice off of my car this morning, but my driveway was nothing more than a skating rink.

I just went outside and OMG in just the past couple of hours the sleet has really piled up. It was like I was walking in sand. I measured in several places and it looks like 1.25 with more falling.
I have 3.5 in. where its piled up in the driveway next to the garage. Like I said it's the consistency of sand. I wonder if this is what penguins have at their beach.

Well as of right now the sleet has started to stop at Adams Dairy Parkway and I-70 in Blue Springs. We've had bursts of sleet, some heavy some not. Right now it's very very light. I don't know how much. My street is covered and you can actually see some icy patches on the road if you look at it. My deck is also quite slick actually. It looks as though the main roads are looking better than my street. There is one main street I can see from mine which seems to be traveling pretty okay. Mine on the other hand, nobody has been down to plow or sand or anything. So, there's my update.
