I just made the drive from Ottawa, KS to Iola, KS.....uhhhh.....that was stupid.  I don't recommend driving south today.  The roads are completely ice packed and it is still sleeting moderately.  Tis' the season, though.  I am ready for spring.

Here in Drexel the light to moderate sleet pellets continue to fall with occasional heavy bursts. Looks like about one half inch so far but more is on the way over the next couple of hours. Temps have been steady this morning at 18 degrees and winds are calm.

I think most is along and south of I-70.  Probably a patch of flurries or freezing drizzle heads north in a few spots.  But the area south of I-70 are really the focus today.

I drove from southern LS to Downtown KC and it took roughly 1 hr 20 mins.  Precip ranged from sleet in LS to freezing rain the closer I got to downtown.

I didn't catch any weather this morning, as a co-worker I called right when I got up offered to drive me to work if I was ready in 15 minutes.  What is the current forecast for this evening into tomorrow morning?

Occasional sleet in Southern O.P.  Doesn't look like it has added much since earlier.  Do you think that it will get worse this afternoon, or better?  I live near 143rd and Pflumm.  Loving it!!!!  My kids were mad though that Blue Valley didn't call school:)

Went outside my house in Kingsville and we have approximately a quarter to half inch of sleet on the ground and the deck has ice on it-very slick down here!!!

When I left Lenexa at 0600 I thought I would be fine, pulling out of my garage. However, the 12 mile drive up to 435 and Stae was not fun. It wasn't the roads so much as the ice freezing on my windshield the whole drive up. Even with my defroster on max I ended up with a 6 inch circle I had to see through until I could pull over and scrape the ice. I was not the only one that had that issue this morning.

Good morning weather team...sleet is continuing around 119th and Nall.  The main streets (Metcalf, Nall, 119th, 95th) are relatively clear, but the side streets are trecherous.  Please remind everyone that the dangers also exist on driveways and sidewalks.  Fortunately, I can park my car in my garage, so I didnt have to chunk ice off of my car this morning, but my driveway was nothing more than a skating rink.

Sleet is light in old OP and Merriam. Roads are passable if you take your time. That doesn't mean it's not totally miserable, cold, wet, and making me check mapquest to see how long it would take to drive somewhere warm.

Persistent sleet in Independence right now.
Roads are covered and icy.  However, I-70 is not that bad.

At work in Trimble (just north of Smithville) and there was only about .25" of snow on the ground when I got here at 8:30.  Pretty distinct line from sleet to snow.  I only live 3 miles south of my work and we had about .10" sleet on the ground.

mornin'chfs327..the worse road conditions of the year in Lees Summit good thing schools are closed...I am not down with our superintendent like chfs327 so I have no say.

Wow...I have 1.20 inches of sleet already. My foot sank into it when I was measuring. Measured 3 different area's on a hard surface. It is coming down at a good pace. I will keep you updated. We are getting ready to go drive around....for fun in the truck. Can't wait to go to a open parking lot, LOLOL!!!

Jeremy,  Good Morning.  I am a first time blogger, long time reader.   I Just wanted to pass an interesting tidbit along.  I just got off the phone with my mother-in-law.  She lives in Central Iowa.  On Tuesday night the Tornado Sirens went off, warning residents to not go outside because the windchill factor was -50 below!  I was getting really depressed about the cold, but I dont feel so bad now!  Thank you and the whole weather team for your insight and knowledge about our fascinating weather here in the KC Metro.  This is the only station I rely on for my weather updates.  Good Job!

Is there another round of precip moving in later today or tonight?  I thought I read someone on the blog it was not very strong and wouldn't do much.  
Is more sleet developing to the west and moving this way or is it about over?  I live in the Northland but we are driving to Wichita tomorrow and wondered if we should skip the travel.

I just went outside and OMG in just the past couple of hours the sleet has really piled up. It was like I was walking in sand. I measured in several places and it looks like 1.25 with more falling.
I have 3.5 in. where its piled up in the driveway next to the garage. Like I said it's the consistency of sand. I wonder if this is what penguins have at their beach.

another update from Sedalia...As of 10:25 the sleet just keeps coming.  I don't know how much sleet we actually have on the ground but it is coming down at a moderate to heavy right now..I am glad I don't have to go anywhere today.

A clap of thunder and VERY heavy sleet going on right now in Clinton.  Just 5 minutes ago, we have a very heavy downpour of freezing rain.  In just a matter of minutes, the handrails and windshields are all iced up.  Just glad the rain switch to sleet.  1/10 approx of ice and 1-1.25 of sleet so far.  Jim in CLinton

My daughter teaches in St. Joe and lives in Gladstone.  She had to go in to work and said it was slow going.  I'm wondering about her return trip this pm.  Actually, she won't be heading south until like 9pm (afterschool event).  What does it look like for her trip home?  Since she is works for the StJ district, they won't necessarily be looking this far south. I'd appreciate some info to pass on to her.  Thanx!!

It is amazing how precipitation dries up as soon as it gets to the Kansas City area.
I have been in the area for about seven months and it seems that areas north and south of us receive much more precipiation amounts.  
Is there a reason for that?

Yea, it is really a mess down here in drexel,  over an inch and a half of sleet and still coming down fairly hard at times, when might we have a break down here?

Well as of right now the sleet has started to stop at Adams Dairy Parkway and I-70 in Blue Springs. We've had bursts of sleet, some heavy some not. Right now it's very very light. I don't know how much. My street is covered and you can actually see some icy patches on the road if you look at it. My deck is also quite slick actually. It looks as though the main roads are looking better than my street. There is one main street I can see from mine which seems to be traveling pretty okay. Mine on the other hand, nobody has been down to plow or sand or anything. So, there's my update.

On the radar the precipitation showing up in the area between Topeka and Ottawa looks like its coming together and setting up for another round for the metro and probably even the northland.

just light snow at the fort...no sleet or freezing rain.  everything is white, but no travel problems that i saw...its only about .25-.5" of snow, so its a non-issue up here.  curious to see how much snow will come through later...we need 2.2" of snow here to hit 40" for the year.

Technically it is getting North of I-70 because I have live just north of I-70 in Blue Springs and I am not getting the heavy stuff but we have had a decent amount of sleet and freezing drizzle here

I WORK IN OSAWATOMIE. ON MY WAY DOWN HERE FROM THE STANLEY AREA I WENT THROUGH FREEZING DRIZZLE TO FREEZING RAIN TO MODERATE TO HEAVY SLEET. IT HAS BEEN SLEETING QUITE HEAVILY ALL MORNING HERE.  IT HAS JUST RECENTLY SWITCHED NOW TO FREEZING DRIZZLE. MIAMI COUNTY IS NOW UNDER A WINTER STORM WARNING. ALL OF US THAT LIVE NORTH OF HERE IN THE KC AREA ARE WONDERING IF WE WILL BE ABLE TO GET HOME. OSAWATOMIE DID NOT CANCEL SCHOOL TODAY. THANKS FOR YOUR CONTNUAL WEATHER UPDATES. I CHECK THE NBC WEATHER BLOG EVERY DAY AND EVEN MORE OFTEN ON DAYS LIKE TODAY. YOU GUYS DO A GREAT JOB FORECASTING EVEN WHEN IT IS DIFFICULT TO DO WITH SOME STORMS.

Downtown has gotten 4.30" of precip so far this year, more than either KCI or Olathe...so the precip hasn't really been "drying up" as soon as it gets to KC. It just seems that way because the heaviest snow band has never lined up right down the middle of town.

Nana-I live in Platte City and teach just south of St. Joe.  It was slow going partially because there are two areas of construction on I-29 (one around Platte City and the other around the H-Z exit).  The roads are really okay to drive.  There was some blowing flurries, but not too slick at all.  Tonight your daughter should be fine driving home, even after nine.  Just watch the construction and remind her to drive cautiously!  :)

The latest NAM for Friday is showing a nice band of snow [.25-.50 liquid eqv.] setting up from south central Kansas on a northeast line through the south KC metro to primarily south of I-70 in Missouri east of KC. Interesting...

Very large snowflakes (silver dollar size) and a small amount of sleet mixed in falling in Eudora. Snow burst covered the streets in about 10 minutes.

HUGE snowflakes falling in southern KCK near 635.  Probably the largest I have ever seen!

Man alive!  Out west of 435, by Mill Valley High School, the snowflakes are the size of '62 Buicks!

WOW we have snow and some of it is as big as golfballs I know we get golfball sized hail but golfball size snow???? I am with Jeff on 41 news I am confused this weather is just NUTTY as nutty as CHFS327 calling the super to cancel school.LOL....
