Another strange storm is coming to an end

Good late afternoon everyone,

Friday at 8:20 AM I will be on Newsradio 980 KMBZ for a recap of this wild week of weather and we will go into my theory the LRC.  Tune into Newsradio 980 Friday morning!

It has been another strange weather day.  Almost all of the significant precipitation, in the form of sleet, occurred along and south of I-35 this morning causing widespread slick conditions.  Until, that is, around 11 AM.  A disturbance came out of the main upper low and has been a heavy snow producer.  Huge snowflakes began falling on the Plaza during our 11 AM newscast, you should have seen Brett Anthony.  He was so excited.  And, then it lined up from Lawrence through Kansas City, KS across the Missouri River to Liberty.  Some of these areas have had to of had 2 quick inches of snow.  This final band is now moving away.

Looking at the satellite movies, and analyzing the latest data, it appears that the upper low is stretching out and becoming slightly positively tilted right now.  I thought, last night, that we would see a slow motion version of many of our storm systems, and it has happened.  This storm is going through a steady weakening and transition as I am writing this.  It will spin by early Friday morning with maybe one last band of light snow.  Additional accumulations from this final band look like a dusting at best.

We will keep monitoring this situation and the next storm passing near by on Saturday.  Is this tiring you out yet!

Have a great day.  Our team of meteorologists at NBC Action News is working on special graphics to describe this crazy weather pattern.  We will  have it ready for the5, 6, and 10 PM newscasts.

The Plaza gets huge snowflakes and once again Lee's Summit Rd. and I-70 got the sleet but NO snow. I even saw that someone in Raytown saw big snow flakes but nary a flake in SE Independence.  Strange weather for sure, sucks that no snow came for us but was a fun system to watch.

-----------------

Even at this micro level the LRC shows itself.  The pattern is the same and this storm is just a weak version of others we have had.

Around 2 pm, drove from Smithville to Gower on 169.  About halfway there, snowflakes were getting quarter sized and visibility was down to around a mile.  Now it's three and there's about 1 inch of snow on the ground in Gower.  They don't appear to have had much sleet here, so it's all snow.  Roads were dry coming through here at two, but are snow covered now at three.

Gary--Here in Topeka/Berryton just a half inch at best of a sleet/snow combo---Maybe some locations around picked up 3/4ths of an inch but not much to write home about.  The streets are packed down and slick so caution must be taken with the drive home.  I am seeing a warm up next week except a brief cool down, are you still expecting that March 21st-28th senerio?  That would be the time period according to my tracking the LRC days.   Take care and keep up the good work, Michael/Berryton

Scott said:

Brent, I obviously cannot speak for the LRC, but the "upcoming Monday storm" has looked very weak to me based on surface trends.

Of the prior three cycles, there was only one event that yielded anything..and that was just a trace at KMCI.

Monday's storm looks like one of the more frequent paths that we have nearly forgotten about with the more hybrid or zonal flow before the amplified flow we have seen in the last four weeks.

It is the split stream that wants to phase as it moves by.  The surface low wants to be further south, but likely will go through NW KS into Nebraska.  This will leave us pretty far south of the surface low.  There isn't a great deal of forcing or lift with this storm until the upper level vort gets a bit closer behind the surface low.

This all happens with some signficant 850mb ridging up to N Dakota.  This part of the pattern is right on schedule, so to say it is not connected with the LRC would be inaccurate.

The pattern is fully inline with the LRC...the surface impact analysis from the LRC might be a hair off - too early to tell.

Based on the surface trending, it will maybe bring some light rain..but nothing to write home about.

7 day looks good to me, I'm with ya PoofyDragon, Kristi & MrSteve!  I just got done scraping over an inch of sleet off the driveway, and put the icemelt down on the stuff that was left.  Wonder if my feet will thaw out?  Sure hope tomorrow is a 'nonevent' and Monday too for that matter.

I am wondering how the roads are.  Usually by this time of day the salt trucks have been by my house so many times there's nothing but pavement left out there. Today, it's still more than half ice covered, making me think they are either low on salt or very busy somewhere else?

A frozen Stormy, who's still voting for spring (with no tornados!)  :o)

Good evening!! Well I am still sitting at 1.20 inches of sleet. Someone earlier described it as "sand" and that is exactly what it feels like under your feet until the freezing rain hit it later in the afternoon. The family and I traveled 69 highway to Overland Park this afternoon and the roads were yucky and slow in Linn Co. and part of Miami Co. but Johnson Co. was not too bad. Their is a pretty obvious difference in the amount of sleet recieved between all 3 counties too. We have piles of it on main street and in parking lots. LOL!! Hoping to get some more precip tonight so school is cancelled tomorrow also.

StormWyndd... i'm with you and several others on spring for sure. but this pattern as defined by the LRC is a wicked one this year and i'm afraid of alot of rain and severe weather issues. and even gary admitted earlier in this blog that winter ain't over yet folks. (i mentioned that to a co-worker today who looked at me and glared! hahaha.... she just didn't want to know, just wanted winter to go away!)

i think scott posted earlier to a comment gary made about being tired that if he thinks he's tired now, wait until spring. that didn't sound too good imo!! and scott knows alot about what he's talking about! right, scott?

Yes, this garbage wore me out well over a month ago.  Such an active pattern and at my house in far northeast KCMO I've still to see a snow that has been able to cover my shoes when I walk to the mail box.  Oh sure, we've had above normal precipitation, but mostly in the form of rain.  Whoopie!  All I've got from this winter is a serious case of SAD from day after day of clouds and cold temperatures.  ~ Dave

Mr. Steve if he only scraped his car once, he's doing pretty good.  I had to do it 3 times while I was waiting for the defroster to warm up enough so I could drive with out the freezing rain freezing on my windshield.

Wow what a difference a couple of miles makes.  I work near I-70 & Admiral where there has been very very little snow today, and just in my short little drive home to Riverside there has to be at least 2 inches of snow on top of all the sleet from that burst this afternoon.

heating bills are a mixed bag of tricks just like our weather... your house, the effiency and age of your furnace, cost of gas your supplier pays (passed to you with no mark-up), and temperatures all play a part with your bill. use less, pay less. but if gas shortages come up and the futures market plays a bit havoc with that, COG - cost of gas - goes up and so does your bill regardless. check out the kansas corporation commission web site if you want to see details. mge and kge also have decent info on how some of this works.

btw... the same goes for electricity and OIL futures. and, now, back to the dang too cold when is it going to be spring weather report....
