Winter just won't leave....February 25....update

Good morning bloggers,

Update at 11 AM:  This storm is not going to get its act together until it is way past Kansas City. Right now we are thinking a few rain showers and then some light snow with very little accumulation overnight.  We will look at everything and have updates on NBC Action News tonight!

The south side of the local area had a snowstorm on Saturday evening.  It was amazing as the northern edge of this storm set up from Shawnee, KS to Blue Springs, MO.  North of this line there wasn't even one flake of snow.  A few inches fell south of this line.  I had 2 ½" and you can see my favorite picture of Breezy and Stormy below (Breezy is on the left, Stormy is looking almost into the camera).

This weather pattern continues to cycle and we strongly believe that there will be more Arctic air building in Canada during the next two weeks and then the series of more energetic storm systems will begin within two to three weeks.  So, I expect us to continue to have the potential for winter storms through March, but there will be a few brief warm ups, one of which should arrive around Thursday.

Another storm is beginning to develop right now.  I am still not certain that it will develop fast enough for us to see snow tonight as it still hasn't quite come together.  Look at the surface map st 5 AM this morning:

The warm front is not very well defined (red line), and the cold front is also not organized (blue line).  This surface low, being northwest of Kansas City right now, will draw in the warmer air and it now appears the south half of the city will get into the 50s today.  An upper level storm is also in various pieces.  It all tries to come together as it is passing by this evening.  If it forms fast enough we could see some accumulation of snow, but right now I would say a dusting of snow is possible overnight in most spots, with possibly 1 inch in far northeastern locations around Trenton (which will make this the 14th week in a row with snow there).  It is still another snowfall, though.  We are up to 17 accumulating snows in our local region.

There is a chance of some rain before it becomes cold enough for snow this evening.  So, we will be watching Live:ESP closely today.

How much snow have you had for the season?  We will post the list later today or tomorrow.

Have a great start to your week.

Gary

Thanks Gary!  I'm glad it won't be slick for my drive home from campus today.  I will have enough stress to deal with today as I have a written exam and a very difficult oral exam.  Love the dog photos!

What a great picture of your dogs!  How did you ever get them to lay in the snow?

I know it may be too soon to tell, but which parts of the metro do you expect to receive the most precipitation tonight?

---------------------

Everyone will get about the same, the way it looks right now, which should be around 1/10th of an inch liquid.   How much snow?  Let's see if the temperatures drop to near freezing.   If it is above freezing we may not get much of an accumulation at all.

And, look how comfortable Breezy and Stormy are in the picture.  They just love the snow.

With that last sleet storm, we got about an inch of snow.  So that brings our total to 39 inches in Platte City!!  Great winter, but I really want to break that 50 mark!

----------------------

I still think you will get very close to 50 inches.

More good work on the synoptic side, Gary.

Guess I don't expect much from this storm at all.  It is at the wrong place and the wrong time, with the wrong intensity for this region.

Its a "developing on east of us" storm.

Looks like the models are syncing up with your trip at the end of the month/early next month.  Perhaps you can chase on your way back from Ohio to see Jamie?

-------------------------

Scott,

Yes, it is lining up well for my trip.  Last year's LRC did not.  So, I can just get away Thursday for a four day weekend in Ohio.

Gary,

Nice photo!

In looking at the mosaic radar loop, I have the impression that the deformation zone from this system might drop through the metro as the system passes by tonight.

If we are to have any snow storms in March we had better have some serious [for March] arctic outbreaks and have all of the other "set-ups" perfectly in place. With the higher sun angle and longer days, seasonally warmer air is going to be a major barrier to overcome this far south.

Bob

Bob,

I agree, but I think we will.

46.2 at my house Nick and TeachinStJoe can let you know their totals. . . love the pic. . . have a stiff E wind right now 15-25 with higher gusts the low must be near by.  But the air in NE is not all that cold so the temp will likely just hold steadyin the 40 degree range until late pm correct?

You know it is now 25 Feb and I have and still have at least an inch of snow on the ground for all of this month except the 2nd and 3rd it melted off and then bang came back on the 4th & 5th and has not left.  I bet 85% of the days since 1 Decemer have had 1 inch on the ground.

Keep in mind normal is 46 & 25!!!

------------------

I like to use the term "average" rather than normal.  It would be normal for it to be 28 degrees today, and it would be normal for it to be 58 degrees today, but they would be below and above average.  Does this make sense?

I believe I am at 4-4.25 inches of snow now, 1.2 inches of sleet and a lot of rain. I can not complain...been a good wet winter. Spring should be a pretty one as long as a late freeze does not ruin it. Your dogs sure are pretty...what breed are they?
Have a good day.

Monica,

I will put you down as around 5.5" since we can add in that sleet as frozen precipitation.

Stormy and Breezy are shepard mixes.  Stormy is mixed with something smaller, maybe a shelty. And Breezy is almost pure German Shepard, but mixed with something.  Stormy weighs 38 lbs.  and Breezy weighs around 55 lbs.

Amazing winter so far! To me the non - active part of the pattern has been more exciting than the active part because I go into the less active part with no expectations and we have had little system after little system come through so I have been pleasantly surprised with the less active part of pattern. I hope this ride continues throughout march because who knows when we will have another winter like this. lets take it while we can. If we get another 10 inches of snow this winter how long will we be talking and referring to the winter of 07/08?

Gary,

I am glad for all of you that you are getting some moisture this winter.  Here on the northern front range of Colorado we are sliding back into drought type conditions, and I think that is basically true of the western high plains region (including western KS).  We seem to be sandwiched between storm systems hitting the western US and then the midwest into the eastern US.  In between we are getting little to nothing - only a .25" of moisture here since late December.

I was hopeful in December because we received some very good snows, and I figured according to the LRC the pattern that brought those beneficial, moist storms would cycle back around and hit us again SOMETIME this winter. Not so (at least for the Rocky Mtn. foothills and western high plains).  Do you have any thoughts as to why the high plains are being missed, and are we looking at severe drought conditions yet again this spring and summer?

Thanks

-------------------

I really think you will get some nice storm systems in March.

stjoeattorney said:

You are correct about the term average. . . the point is we are excited to see 45 or 50 degree temps the last 4 days of Feb which if you look at the  climate records are the "norm"  The norm has not been around up here for 45 days. . . back at the start of Feb when KC got into the upper 60s and low 70s we managed a mere low 50s temp.  Seems we have been almost in a different "zone" this winter.  Those warm fronts just didn't have enough to get up here on several days. . .

Gary, I thoroughly agree with you that the average temperature should be called "average" and not "normal."  To me, the word "normal" implies "what the temperature should be," and in a Kansas City winter, there's just no saying.  Almost every winter that I've known here, there's been some nights below zero and some days in the 60s.  Although I would personally prefer to see temperatures like Lake Wobegon children -- all above average -- around here, you have to expect what you get.  Thank you and your team for so often telling us just what to expect next.

Your welcome!  And, thank you for participating in the blog.

ok I have a question, when we got the snow on Saturday night, I experienced something I have never experienced before.  Ok so when the precipitation started, it started as snow, then is changed over to sleet, then a brief period of freezing rain, then snow, then sleet, then freezing drizzle, then finally snow, would you able to explain why there were so many diffrent types of precipitation during such a short period of time?  I am confused.

-----------------

John,

It did something similar at my house, but I don't think you had any freezing rain.  Remember freezing rain is different than sleet, which is frozen rain.  It never was below 32 degrees so it was likely sleet that you are talking about.  Anyway, I had the same thing.  It started as snow, then it changed to sleet, then back to all snow.  It was close to being just snow the entire time.  We could go into a 5 paragraph explanation, but let's keep it simple today.  You were on the threshold of these types of precipitation and once it came down heavy enough it changed over to snow.

Gary---I think I gave you this total before as Topeka and Berryton have missed out pretty much on the last couple of storms.  We had a dusting to a couple of inches a week ago Sunday.  Topeka as of this morning has 32.4 inches----at my house (Berryton), I have it measured at 34.1 inches.  Anyway, on the next round are you expecting the storms to take their original tracks or could there be a variance?  If it the latter we may be pretty much finished for the season.  If it is the former than we may make it past 40 inches.  Time will tell.  Thanks for you work and information.  Michael/Berryton/Topeka

Michael,

I think the storm tracks will be similar, but will it be as cold?

Ick! I am so tired of cold and snow. I knew we were due for a miserable winter at some point and for me, it is this years. I wish I could afford to soend the winter at my folks house in Surprise, AZ. They are in the mid 70's this week. Then I would come back here in April for severe weather season. At the rate this winter is going we'll only 4 months or so of really warm weather before it cools off and starts all over again.

When I went home for lunch, it was 54 degrees on my home weather station on the more "humid subtropical" side of the metro. ;^)

As the clouds moved in, it immediately backed off to 52. It appears that this storm is to explode in development after it passes our area. Chicago appears to be the prime target of this storm with 6 to 10" predicted.

I guess I was thinking just more activity in general.  I think March will bring a little for both that like Winter and Spring.  I am not as bullish as Gary with the blizzard at the end of the month,  but do expect to see an active pattern then.

What I am more interested in is to watch how these fronts -  we have seen in the last few months that create huge temp gradients - materialize in a Springtime setup.

More than the stormy cycle we see, this is what I am more interested in watching.

---------------

Scott,

You are going to drive me crazy.  I said a blizzard in the area!  Which means somewhere in the viewing area.  Remember you weren't with me on the 60 degree day on December 1st as well. LOL

It seems like it's either feast or famine so it would not suprise me if we start drying out at some point.  It needs to dry out a little at least enough to get the garden worked up.  Usually the last week of February is a good time to set out onion sets and plant radishes.  Not going to happen this year.

once again there is a warm front just to our south and we are around 40 degrees, the snow has been melting, but there is so much moisture content that there are alot of areas of standing water a very sloppy ground situation, yes I to wonder if warm fronts this spring will stall just to our south like they have done many times this winter, if so that could mean a lot of heavy rain events for us, not to mention severe weather, but I have learned that alot of times when we were thinking it should be active during severe weather season it turns out to not be as active so we will see, but this is a very stormy LRC in general.
