SNOW EFFECT CLOUDS, SNOW SHOWERS & OUR NEXT STORM

Good afternoon bloggers,

Gary and I are seeing an interesting phenomenon going on in central Missouri.this afternoon and I thought I would blog about it (see visible satellite below).  The extensive snow field in Iowa & northern Missouri is causing clouds to form just like they would downwind of the Great Lakes.  The winds are blowing from the northwest right over the snow pack into unsnowcovered areas of northern Missouri.  These winds are likely picking up moisture from the snow, as that air is transported over the warmer bare ground it becomes unstable, so cumulus clouds form.  Gary and I do not believe we have ever seen this before.  We have seen just about everything this winter!

Also, Live ESP is almost completely filled up with snow shower returns.  The air aloft is so cold, that even at 30 degrees we have become unstable.  The air is dry at the surface, so likely just a few flakes may make it to the ground.

We are also tracking our next potential storm for Sunday-Tuesday.  The GFS blows the system through, closing off an upper low well to our southeast.  The ECMWF, UKMET & Canadian models have the low closed off further west.  If these the 3 models are right, then we could have a wet & maybe wintry storm early next week, but we feel the GFS has out performed those other models with this type of storm this season.  We will know soon.

Have a good day,

Jeff

Never in my life did i think i would see "lake effect" snow in land locked Kansas.  This season has truly proven that once we think we have a handle on what is going to happen we get a curveball thrown to us.

Jeff,

Good to hear from you! You should chime in more often! INTERESTING blog indeed ! (is Gary sick?) if so, Gary, hope you feel better soon! You did sound pretty hoarse on the 10PM last night.

My last post made it in on the end of the last blog, so I hope it's ok to post it again:
barb15718 ,
You brought up March '90...which led me to my "collection"of calendars that I have kept for the last (umpteen) years. You are right about the snow on the 23rd.  Here's what I had logged in for the week of  March19-23, 1990 .
Mon. 19th-54degrees, 20th- 60*, 21st- 72*, 22nd- 64*,and Fri. 23rd-26 degrees with 4" of snow for Olathe, and 9" of snow for KC north !

Here's some weather trivia from my 1993 calendar:
March 13---"Worst snow storm of Century"- East coast-- Syracuse,NY-4ft !, Pittsburg 20", W.Va. 24", Kentucky 24", Tennessee 21", N.C. 2-3ft., Alabama 15"

And other events from 1993,  here in K.C.:
MARCH
18th- 1 inch of snow
31st- 47degrees
APRIL
1st- 37degrees with snow(less than an inch)
11th- 67
12th- 47 with heavy rain/hail
15th- 43 with rain/snow
18th- 74 degrees
20th- 44 with rain/snow

So, we can have a mixture of rain/snow as late as the end of April...I had totally forgotten, what with the mild winters we've had the last several years!
Whew...we certainly are the "land of extremes" here in the Plains !

**********************************************

Ethalo,

Thanks.  Gary is at work today, I just did a guest blog.  Those are some interesting stats, 1993 was quite a season.

Stormdog and his wife and sister in have "endured" various degrees of the Type A flue, which our shots were suppose to prevent - Jo Anne had to be taken to emergcy room as St Marys with hi fever etc - both Melva, my sister in low and myself were on the cusp of something, tho my wife doubts I had the flu.  However, days later, aching mussings, tho no fever like my wife endured, the aches, the lassitude, the  unwell felling in my gut, heavy cough, sweats without  feaver, lead me to believe (after 6 days) that perhaps my reaction to flue was minor compared to hers, thos not a lot pleasant.   How did the CFC get this so wrong (1st time in 25  years)  Makes one wonder whether the Administrations incompetence ( "Good Job Brownie - New Orleans - and the incompetent response to that ) - the world wonders...  This whole Bush administration  has been a disaster, from Irag, Abu Grahab to New Orleans - how bad can this get ?  A plague disaster?  God forbid.

And the weather, horrendous, cold, depressing in the extreme, ain't been much of a help.

Bet you all will never post this, but typing this makes the Dog get it off his chest.

Driving home from class today I was definitely wondering why there were cumulus clouds, moving at a good pace, and so low.  Well now I know.  Thanks for the quick education.  I really didn't think I had any brain space left at this point to learn even a tid bit of any kind of something resembling anything at all.  Make sense?  No, probably not b/c I now officially have no more room inside my cranium.  It's is official.  Must take nap.  Sleep is good.

Dog, I hope you feel better soon, but come on...do you really think Bush is responsible for what viruses the CDC picks out for the vaccine?  I'm quite sure they have panels of scientists and other medical proffesionals who work on formulating the vaccine...not Bush.  It's a bit of a stretch to blame him.

my girlfriend and i have a question, how can you tell the difference between lake effect snow and just regular snow?

Snow is snow. Lake effect can be quite heavy, but a snowflake is a snowflake.

Dog hope you get better but Bush did not make this a snowy winter for me . . . this snowfield clouds/snow is neat and defines the winter for the area SO FAR. . . just plain, difficult to predict; unusual once in a 30 year for snow and we are not done yet. . .

Well I still have snow around up here the warm air has not busted up past highway 36, I  live a half block north of 36 hwy!   I still have twigs in my yard that I have not been able to rake up yet due to all the ice then snow cover and darkness.  No signs of spring in the trees or shrubbs --  OK I thought I would never say it but I have had my over 3.75 months of winter bring on spring^^^^^^^^

NO more snow 46 inches, at my house, 30.5 at the airport is enough its time for baseball and my second favorite thing KITE FLYING. . . love it as a kid once I had one up on 1000 feet of string for five days [left the end of the string a tree and checked it on my way to school, at lunch, after school, at 10:00 ands 2:45am when I got up to throw papers] ********

I am betting on the mean we are 10 degrees below the average for Feb.  THE AVERAGE HIGH NOW IS 48 LOW 26

As a kid and later as a young man in southeast Missouri roughly from 1973 through about 1985 we had a period of years where this type of winter was the norm.  My daughter who will be 23 tomorrow and my son who is 17 have never really seen a winter like this one.  Not so much down here on the southside with the snow but with the repeated blast of cold air.  Its nice to be able to draw comparisons for your kids to finally get it when it comes to a winter like the "good ole days".  Our biggest snows in those days were always in late February and into March.  Gary might we be moving into one of those cycles like we had 30 some years ago?  I am more convinced that we are at the end of a global warming period and headed for a cooling period over the next 25-50 years than I am continued warming.  Oh, district basketball tournament at our school this week thanks for the calm weather this week.
