Good afternoon bloggers,
Gary and I are seeing an interesting phenomenon going on in central Missouri.this afternoon and I thought I would blog about it (see visible satellite below). The extensive snow field in Iowa & northern Missouri is causing clouds to form just like they would downwind of the Great Lakes. The winds are blowing from the northwest right over the snow pack into unsnowcovered areas of northern Missouri. These winds are likely picking up moisture from the snow, as that air is transported over the warmer bare ground it becomes unstable, so cumulus clouds form. Gary and I do not believe we have ever seen this before. We have seen just about everything this winter!

Also, Live ESP is almost completely filled up with snow shower returns. The air aloft is so cold, that even at 30 degrees we have become unstable. The air is dry at the surface, so likely just a few flakes may make it to the ground.
We are also tracking our next potential storm for Sunday-Tuesday. The GFS blows the system through, closing off an upper low well to our southeast. The ECMWF, UKMET & Canadian models have the low closed off further west. If these the 3 models are right, then we could have a wet & maybe wintry storm early next week, but we feel the GFS has out performed those other models with this type of storm this season. We will know soon.
Have a good day,
Jeff
