NBC Action Weather Blog

A storm approaches

Good evening everyone,

We have been working on our weather special all afternoon.  So, we haven't had a chance to keep up with the blog.  Our special airs next Wednesday night, April 9th, and it is called "Surviving the Storm".  Sean Wilson will be talking about his experience in Greensburg, KS in his own words.  We will show some fascinating tornado footage, and get you ready for severe weather season.

And, if you know any kids that want to win a trip to Disneyworld and be on NBC Action News, then have them enter the Jr. Meteorologist Contest.  The deadline for entries is April 9th.   You must be a 3rd through 8th grader to enter.  Here are all the rules, and you can view last years finalists and winner.  Good luck.  Maybe you can make this into a weekend project.

Look at the surface set up for Thursday morning. There is a warm front, Gulf of Mexico air moving north and thunderstorms are already forming in Oklahoma.  We will likely see rain, and the possibility of thunderstorms on Thursday morning, but then the cold air will again take over.

O.K. severe weather fans.  The cold air may be taking over on Thursday.  But, what about one week from Thursday.  Look at the latest run of the GFS. This would inject our lower atmosphere with 65 degree dewpoints and set the stage for our first serious threat of severe thunderstorms.  This is a forecast map valid one week from tomorrow.

The jet stream is about to dive strongly into the western United States next week.  We will talk about this and Thursday's storm in a little while.

Have a great evening. I will be talking about all of this in a  few mintues at 6 PM, and then we will go into the "changing weather" at 10 PM tonight.

How much rain up north Gary?

-----------------

It could be 1/10th of an inch or less.  But, thunderstorms may form around 7 AM near us and these could dump quick 1/2 to 1 inch amounts up north, but confidence is low on this possibility right now.

Glad to see that long range thinking :) Often times for spotting, I can mentally plan ahead and prepare things from long range trends and a gut feeling for spotting anytime over a suprise event. Of course the same works for anyone who plans around for winter weather and most life events in general!

Do you think we are done with hard freezes anymore? Lately I've had a few very light frosts and everything is starting to bloom. I know you are busy with the severe weather special and many people dont realize how much time those take to prepare, along with just doing the shows, forecasting, blog, appearances, emails etc.. and think this is something people should remember at times too. This doesn't include a major severe weather or winter storm where you guys even put in far more hours.

JB,

Yes, it is nice to have a "somewhat calm" week.  I just struggled through the 6 PM weathercast after spending so much time on the special.  But, I will be focused at 10 PM.

We have to watch Sunday evenings cold front for a possible freeze, and then after this big storm moves across the nation next week we have to watch for another chance.

Have a great evening and thanks for the kind thoughts.  And, I think you know me by now.  I wouldn't post that map, if I didn't think there was a good chance of our first real severe weather threat next week.  It is still directly related to the winter storms, so we will see how it lines up.

Since it's a week away, is the severe weather threat next Thursday just a fantasy right now, or do you think it will really pan out as we draw closer?

----------------

I think there is a very good chance that something close to this pans out, but this doesn't mean we will have severe weather in our area.

Okay...I am ready!!! Bring on the rain. I (hubby) got all my seed and fertilizer down. I am hoping for a good 1/2 inch but not more than that or it will all wash away because our ground is already saturated. We need a break down here so soccer can get going. My middle daughter has a soccer game tomorrow evening and it is not looking good. Ughhh!!! Have a great evening.

Monica,

This could be a struggle for us to get more than 1/10th of an inch.  I am hoping for more, but not confident in it at all.
