A soaking Tuesday morning rain

Good morning bloggers,

Congratulations to the Kansas Jayhawks on winning the National Championship.  Down 60-51 with 2 minutes left, that was unbelievable.  When they return to Lawrence this afternoon it will be another cool spring day.

A large area of rain with embedded thunderstorms developed and has moved through most of the area this morning.  The back edge of the rain will move through by noon, so it should dry out for the Royals home opener this afternoon.  You will need your winter coat if you are going to the game as wind chill factors will be near 32 degrees on the  back side of this storm.

After this storm goes by, another one is approaching.  The severe weather threat could spread into our area on Thursday as this second storm lifts out into the plains.  Look below at the surface forecast from the 06z (1 AM) run of the GFS model.  This is valid at 1 PM Thursday afternoon:

We will see if this trend continues, but that is a strong surface low moving northeast, near Wichita, KS.  Once again, this is the forecast map for Thursday.

Meteorologist Brett Anthony will be on through the Today show, and on our Mid-Day newscast at 11 AM.  We will be in Lawrence setting you up for the big celebration today, and we will be out at Kauffman Stadium for the Royals home opener this afternoon.

I am back from Florida.  I went to Fort Lauderdale and had great weather.   It was 84 degrees each day with tremendous thunderstorms each night.  Have a great day.  We will try to update the blog later on this afternoon.

Remember....."Surviving the Storm", our weather special is on at 8 PM Wednesday evening.  It is a half hour special.  We will have our spring forecast, go over some spectacular tornadoes, and prepare you for severe weather season.

Burrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr, it was really chill when I stepped out to read my rain gage here, north of Leavenworth,  2.15" is what we are showing here. Rocked and rolled with heavy thunder and lightening about 2 am.
Amazing how quickly everything is turning green outside, but stop the rain, the farmers need to get their corn in.

Congratulations KU, what a fantastic game!!!
And welcome home Gary, while I always watch Brett and Jeremy, it makes me feel a lot better when your here during Tornado season.

Hi, Gary et al. The dogs and I just went out (them to do their morning dogginess, me to check the rain gauge). So far, we have 1.92" here in beautiful uptown Emma, MO.

The dogs emptied themselves, I emptied the  gauge, and we'll send a final total later today.

Walter,

Breezy and Stormy just came in from outside too!  They are soaked, but done.  I am now on my way to a school with Stormy.

Bring the rain, the corn will wait, no worries for the corn unless its not down by the 28TH.  What we don't need is floods.  Thats what will happen if it doesn't slow down between now and Friday.

Thanks!

Welcome Home Gary!!!

I had a little over an inch of rain in SE Lee's Summit this morning. I'm hoping for more rain. My grass needs it really bad. I was looking at pictures from a BBQ we had last year at the end of march and my grass was already lush and green. It's just now waking up from the winter.

I'll update with a total when I get home

Gary,

I know you said many weeks ago that spring would be wet and below average temps but other than waiting for June, is there any hope of a string of 65-75 degree days, besides an occasional tease. I'm not complaining about the rain, but this cold and below average temps is really getting old. Anxiously awaiting your next 45 day predictions. Though I'm not glad about the weather, I am impressed as always with your accuracy!!!

Jeff

--------------------

Jeff,

We do have a good chance of a nice break with warmer temperatures next week.   We will talk about this possibility soon.  Long term, the averages will suddenly be in the 70s next month.  So, it has to eventually happen.  It will warm up soon.

I loving that setup for Thursday, could we finally get our 1st Moderate Risk? Could we still some snowflakes behind Thursday's storm? I'll have to check the new data when it comes in. Right Now, I'm so tired. Stayed up to 1am watching the Jayhawk special. That game was nerve racking.

It will depend on the ability for the atmosphere to heat up.  If you just look at the surface low and set up, then I would say moderate risk.  Will the atmosphere warm into the 70s in the warm sector?

twister11, I doubt Thursday will be a moderate risk for us. The storms will be exiting the area by midday on Thursday this will limit heating potential here for us. Don't worry about it though...We will see a moderate risk over the area soon enough. We are still a little ways out from the actual start to severe season for the KC area.

So how much rain are we expecting Thursday and what time?  My son is supposed to have a soccer game around 6:30 PM.  Of course with as much rain as we are getting today - the fields may be too wet to play without additional rain. . .  Please put in an order for some DRY weather so we can get all these games played.  :)

OK.  woke up at about 3 A.M. to the beautiful flash of lightning and the sound of windows rattling as a steady area of rain with lightning and thunder moved in, nice.
Now it is once again dark, gray, and cool with low clouds and some more drizzle on the radar.   Nice to see another wet system with it's eyes on us within 48 hours, that one could be a doozy.  Yes it will warm up, it has to, but it may be a struggle to get 90 degree weather this year, at least until July, this year we may notice the humidity more than the actual heat for the early "summer"(late spring).

The NWS is forecasting us to get up to the mid 60's on Thursday. I think the only thing Gary is thinking is the rain will prevent us from getting unstable. It looks like the warm front will make it to us according to the map. ************** Twister, The last couple of runs of the GFS have shifted the position of the low for Thursday. It will be a huge temperature spread across the viewing area. I'm guessing Thursday's high will be raised some by Gary today. This may be a case where parts of the south/southeast metro is 10 degrees warmer than the far north side. Tricky setup and about anything from 48-68 is possible right now. Jeremy

If we keep getting these widespread rain events we could be dealing with more of a flooding concern, than a severe threat if temperatures remain cold, but if it does warm up with these storms then we could be dealing with severe threat too. Also congrats Jayhawks.

Nick Rau said:

Also remember that with some storm systems, if the upperlevel set up is strong enough it can overcome the cool surface air somewhat, especially if the warm front is right over you or just to your south, even though YOU might not be in the warm unstable air at the surface if it is close to you and is very warm and really being lifted over the cold layer you could still get large hail and sometimes other severe stuff, remember March 12th, 2005, it was in the lower forties and we where having large hail, tornado warnings and wind damage in spots, not saying that is what we are in for  but the upperlevel system in this next storm is a lot stronger than the last few.

Gary and Jeremy,

Id love to hear your takes on what you think may happen Thursday! Right now it appears as if a major severe weather outbreak is possible just to the south, but will that shift north or west at all?

Go Royals!

----------------------

JB,

The Royals are winning, the Jayhawks are National Champions, and now there is a chance of severe weather.  We, at this moment, are forecasting 72 degrees with a dewpoint of 65 Thursday evening.  This should be enough for "mini" supercells.  But, will it warm up that much.  It will depend on the morning convection and when it moves off.  I am going to do what we always do and not worry about it until sometime Wednesday.  Let's see how it looks tomorrow.
