NBC Action Weather Blog

Updated....Calm across Kansas so far

Good late afternoon bloggers,

4 PM update:

We continue to monitor the developments over our region.  Nothing has formed as of 4 PM over western Kansas.  Some drizzle is trying to form as a weak circulation is evident on the satellite movie over central Kansas.  The atmosphere is too stable for any thunderstorm development ahead of this disturbance.  It is becoming more unstable over western Kansas, but the surface low is over the mountains at 4 PM, and this is one of the reasons for no thunderstorm development out west, so far.  There are two more good chances for rain and thunderstorms showing up in the next 72 hours.  #1:  Friday morning as the cold front moves through, and #2:  Saturday night as the next cold front moves through.  There will also be a possible frost or light freeze Saturday morning and Monday morning.  We will be tracking all of these developments on our newscasts tonight on NBC Action News in HD, that's right HD.  We debuted in HD at 11 AM this morning.

Previous entry below:

As we move through the afternoon, the moderate risk of severe thunderstorms continues way off to our northwest as you can see in the last blog.  We still see very limited chance that we even have a shower between now and midnight.  If we see any evidence of this threat shifting east we will blog later this afternoon.

Here are a couple of pictures from this mornings visit to Aquilla, downtown.  It was bring your son's and daughter's to work day and the kids were very nice to Stormy.  Stormy did a great job performing her tricks too:

Have a great day.  We will be tracking any developing thunderstorms later today on NBC Action News in HD!

Gary

Randy, while there isn't alot to chase..I would think from a chaser perspective, having one storm well defined would be easier than several to choose from that aren't as well defined?  Dunno.

It would have been a long drive for sure...but it looks pretty good on radar.  Maybe half the fun of chasing is picking the one storm of many that produces...

The storms will likely NOT have large hail or tornadoes when they reach us, IF they reach us. The storms are currently moving off to the northeast. The "tornadic" weather likely will not get too far south and east of the Watch Box area, I think the watch is more reactionary to the cells that have gone potentially tornadic, and those cells are moving east and north east.

those are not potentially tornadic, there have been eight confirmed houses destroyed just by beloit ks, there are currently 2 confirmed tornadoes on the ground. I have two friends that are officers in the counties currently under warnings and they are confirmed on the ground, the one cell has been tornadic since six pm this evening, simply amazing

FIREEMS,
Where are the tornadoes on the ground?

Indeed, FIREEMS.  The cells north of the KS/NE border have bowed out, and thus will unlikely be tornadic and probably weaken.  There is a great gust front visible on the Topeka radar ahead of the bowing cells.  What bears watching are the cells which are currently gaining strength near Concordia as it applies to the metro.  However, the liklihood of them maintaining such strength over that distance is pretty small.  It'll probably get windy here in the Metro by the time that reaches us.  Keep watching that Topeka radar!

there was major damage 3 miles north of beloit, major damage in Jamestown (just west of concordia) They have closed a state highway completely down in those counties

i was talking about the most southern and western storms. i thought those storms wouldnt be tornadic now to, they have been tornadic since six pm, so we are seven hrs later, I dont know if they still be tornadic by the state line in kc but Im in northern riley co, (manhattan area) and Im watching closely

Looks like a line of storms trying to form west of Salina.

Thanks Nick.

The one cell around the Concordia area is really strong. I can't believe it is still producing tornados. I hope those people are ok. Surely it will have to weaken pretty soon. Right??

As far as I can tell, just from watching the radar, the rest of the storms seem to be weakining a little bit.

good it just weakened, and the tornado warning has been canceled for now

FIREEEMS,
I read the reports over on the SPC website.

chieffan07,
A line of storms is forming to the west of Salina KS.

Oh, I knew what you meant, FIREEMS.  You are about as on top of it as one can be.  You are way ahead of the game.  So long as we have south winds and juicy dewpoints, we can't discount the fact that the storms may maintain strength.  It's more of a wait and see approach at this point.  We have a big advantage that these stroms initiated well west of the metro.

This is also a good example of "backbuilding"!

Thanks Kristi. I just looked at the radar again and I do see that line. Does anyone expect this new line to become as strong as the other ones.

I really don't mind thunderstorms but I really want to make, as much as possible anyway, that the tornadic chance is low before going to sleep.

Also, if anyone could give me an estimate on the time that these storms should arrive in the metro area (especially the Liberty area). I know thats kinda specific but I am just looking for some info before deciding whether or not to go to sleep.

Thank you all very much.

I would also be inclined to think that these storms will weaken as they reach the metro.  Notice the gust front out ahead of the main line that extends from the tri-state all the way back to S of Concordia. Many times the outflow of collapsing thunderstorms when that becomes dominant is enough to cut off its own inflow to a certain extent.  That said, sometimes the outflow can spark new storms out ahead of the main squall.  It's not looking that way now per the Topeka radar...

I am not buying the gust front blowing out the feed.  The LLJ is booming right now with 70-80kt inflow.  Its going to be tough to choke that out.

I am more concerned about the tail forming along the cold front dragging through...I think what is north will stay north...

However, the surface low is deepening as we speak..and will likely track just NW of the metro...quite interesting really...the surface low in SW KS is serving as a nice funnel for the LLJ right into the boundary itself.  Kinda like an accelerator.

Dewpoints are still in the mid 60s with some 70s right near the OK/KS border in central KS.  Looking at the forecast soundings, the moist air will continue its movement to the east as the PW values increase in the next 3 hours.

CAPE is projected at 2582.  That is healthy.  I do not see this blowing itself out with the veering sheer, the big LLJ and a very moist environment.

This is something to watch as it moves east.

scott,

what do you expect from these storms when they reach the metro?? hail, wind, tornadic??

Scott, a priviledge at such a late hour for me.  I dunno, you do bring up a good point, but my forte has always been nowcasting and radar interpretation.  I'll be the first to agree with you in that the air is still juiced up here in the metro.  That's why I would never discount a severe potential to manifest itself, but I have seen more "choke outs" than not in this situation, but granted this is still further west than the usual...  I just don't see any of these storms GAINING any strength than they already have until after they pass through the metro, with the help of dynamics and daytime heating.  To my eye, this line will take at least until 7 or 8 am to reach KC. Will they be strong? Probably, but wind is more my concern more than any other hazard.  That is a given, but I don't get paid to do this for a living...

We were on the supercell when it was west of Hill City, KS....the storm had awesome structure....issue was it was right at dark and we were not able to get any good pictures or video....pretty well defined wall cloud as it moved over Hill City, but no funnel or tornado observed, no damage in Hill City property, but had reports of power flashes W and NW of the city.....stayed on the storm as it approached the Stockton and Osborne area....saw a less defined wall cloud near Stockton with a brief funnel....saw a better wall cloud with funnel near the ground near Osborne...brief 1 to 2 minutes only....had video on it....not sure if there was enough lightning to get it or not.....will have to wait until later today to review it....did not see a lot of damage, but heard reports from Beloit....hope no one was seriously injured in the storm....this storm was a monster in size and amazing to watch it hold its structure for so long, 5+ hours.....we chose to not play the dryline and it paid off this time.....1/4 forecasting and 3/4 luck.....LOL...all home safe, that is the main thing....

Has anyone heard anything about the tornado in Beloit?  My parents live 1 mile north of Beloit on Hwy 14.  It's so early right now, hate to call them and wake them, but I haven't been able to find out anything on the news.  Tornados, storms, high winds are quite frequent out there, still never get over that clenched fist feeling in the gut whenever storms start to boil.
