Gary thank you so much for doing that video clip for my wedding November 24, 2007, Border showdown, I sent you an e mail several months ago but I never got a response. I just want to say that what you did was wonderful and it made the evening. Thank you. Right now no severe weather in S KC MO but I see towers everywhere.

one thing I'm noticing around the area is a consistant South wind. for strong tornadoes to develop you really want a SE wind being pulled into a supercell so maybe since we don't have that SE component its keeping these things in check a little bit because i've seen storms go tornadic right after that go severe and this isn't happening right away. Just some analysis for thought.

Can someone please tell me why my weather radio is not working? It's set to the SAME code for Johnson County, but I can't pick up any channels, only static. It didn't even go off for the tornado warning. What a night for it to quit working. Help! Can anyone offer suggestions on what to try to get my radio working again?

marlina 10 - go to the NOAA website and do a search for weather radios.  It will direct you to the brand you bought where you can look up directions to set it online.  Maybe you have it set to the wrong NWS office.  Somehow that happened to mine a couple of months ago and I had to reset everything.  Your county codes can also be found by doing a NOAA search.

Roberto....in my OPINION...I think it's going to be hard to tell when these storms are going to produce tornadoes if they do at all because we have a straight South wind versus a South East wind. You really do want a SE wind to get a big tornado event someone correct me if I'm wrong or praise me if I'm right but that's what I think is happening tonight. Gary I know your busy as heck tonight your input on this thought would be greatly appreciated.

The tornado threat isn't that high for a couple of reasons, one of them is, as some people have surmised, that the amount of directional wind shear in the atmosphere is not optimal for developing strongly rotating storms.  Another factor is that the surface moisture is not as rich and deep as it needs to be to have a large tornado outbreak.

Long rumbling thunder now at Vivion and Davidson in the Northland.  Threatening skies to the southwest....the hail threat is there because there is sufficient cooling with height and with strong upper level winds overhead, these storms are able to evacuate the air that is rising, which helps the storms have stronger updrafts, which supports larger hail.

MrSteve, you're right.  I have seen rotating wall clouds in the past, in situations where I had a good view, but from my house the rotation would have to be very strong and noticeable to see it.  In May 2004, when the tornado hit Gladstone and Liberty, I was in Liberty and was at a friend's house who lived in a heavily wooded neighborhood just south of the HyVee there. And so even though the funnel cloud/lowering tornado came right over his house and did some tree damage, I never got even one glimpse of it approaching because of the extensive trees blocking the view!

I noticed that the wind in Topeka has shifted to NW and dropped to 6 mph while a strong S wind continues in Lawrence.  Could this be an indication that the cold front has stalled and may be wanting to back up a bit in response to the approach of the surface low to our southwest?  There are thunderstorms in central Kansas west of Salina, and this is probably the energy that will trigger the second line of thunderstorms later on.  It will be interesting to see the 9 pm report from Topeka to see if the wind continues to back in a clockwise direction, possibly to the N or NE....

One more comment, on the Topeka doppler radar there is a faint linear feature that can be seen running NE to SW just west of Topeka.  In loop mode, you can see this linear feature moving to the northwest.  This may be the front backing up to the west, or else it's outflow from the storms to the east.  A severe thunderstorm is moving east just NW of Salina.

Newest surface ob from Topeka confirms retrograde frontal motion.  Wind is SE, and dewpoint has increased from 48 to 55.  Surface low seems to be near or just NW of Wichita, where winds are light SE and pressure is 29.34, while in Hutchinson the wind in the last hour switched from light SE to NW at 17 and pressure rose from 29.34 to 29.41, indicating frontal passage.

This is so exciting, I'm going to be late for work....the tail end of the southern cluster of storms to the west of Chanute is backbuilding and lifting north towards Eureka.  I would keep an eye on this area of storms, if and when the local excitement dies down.  The Wichita radar also clearly shows the cold front moving southeast, and there appears to be some echoes starting to develop along the front.  Could be the beginnings of our late night squall line.
