NBC Action Weather Blog

Hang in there!

Stay tuned to NBC Action News HD for the latest on the severe weather across the area tonight!  Our entire team of Meteorologists will be here overnight to keep you updated!

It has been a busy night and thank you so much for watching our continuing coverage of the severe weather.  We have one tornado that was reported to touchdown in Clinton County east of Plattsburg around highway 116 and W highway...close to Turney too.

At 9:08 p.m. there was a report of two brief touchdowns near intersection of 215th and prospect just south-southwest of Belton, MO.

Below is a picture of mammatus clouds near McLouth, KS.  Thank you to David McGuire for the picture!

Here is a picture of golf ball size hail in Weston sent in by Daniel Robinson.  I'm guessing a the repair shops will be busy in the coming weeks!

Please continue to send in your pictures and reports!  You guys make this blog awesome!

We will keep you posted all night long on NBC Action News HD!  I know missing a favorite show isn't much fun, but keep people safe is our #1 priority...but we will hopefully get some times posted of when you can DVR the shows in the coming days.

It is earily quite outside after a day of winds and moderate heat. We are sandwiched inbetween all the severe storms here in La Cygne, but I think our luck is about to run out with the storm coming up from Iola.

Gary, I don't mind the programming interuptions. If i lived in area where there was severe weather I would want to know the details behind it. Great job this evening!

Hi Team, wanted to let you know that in Paola, 1 mile south of Hillsdale Lake (255th and Harmony Rd) we had pea sized hail mixed with heavy rain, that ended with a loud thunder storm, the kind that vibrates the house, must have gone right over us.  approx 2030, the satellite tv has been in and out so we've got the KSHB Radar on the computer and we are listening to the radio for reports or warnings

Thanks.

On the way back 435 east going towards stateline I saw incredible Cloud to Ground lightning and one was so intense it hit something and something exploded on the ground when it hit. amazing stuff. Anyone know anything about a funnel cloud that a "trained storm chaser" saw in SE Lee's Summit?  He was traveling east on 150 at 291 and said it was NE of the intersection - about 200 yds off the ground.  Heard this on KMBZ but nowhere else.  We live on the SE corner of that intersection and I was in the basement with two very concerned kids listening to sirens, watching Gary and intermittently muting NBC and listening to KMBZ! We were sort of in a bullseye and trying to gather lots of info at once!  Some rocking and rolling, but we've definitely been through worse.  But just curious about that report on KMBZ.  Raised a few eyebrows around here.

For those of you who are scared of the storms tonight, many people in the Kansas City area have never seen a tornado.  When the SPC puts out a "Slight Risk" or "Moderate Risk" statement, the percentages it gives are the percent that you will see severe weather within 25 miles of you.  So don't get worked up.  Just take precautions and don't ignore the warnings.  They called people who ignore all of the storms warnings "victims".

Squall line just beat the stuffing out of Chanute, KS  but it looks like it'll drift by to the east of us.  Solo storm has moved to a more northerly track that might bring it here, but it doesn't appear to be gaining strength any longer.

On the other hand, it's radar image is taking on a very classic supercell shape.  So it may be an early morning surprise here in the KC area.  Currently it's passing just north of Yates Center, KS.

So far as a good night's sleep is concerned, flip a coin.  That's about the best odds right now.

However since monday or Tuesday I have been saying that we could possibily break a 30 or more year drought of tornado touchdowns in Olathe. Even Though there were 3 Tornado warnings for us, None produced the Tornado that touched down.

However That I can Predict that Johnson County will probabily have a tornado warning is nothing short of a Miracle. Since usually I get laughed at or been told to Quiet down that im over exaggerating things and hyping them up. Or trying to see if an Icestorm would be in the Forecast.

Since That is overwith. In Olathe at My Position i have 0.87 inches of rain and is waiting for the Squal line to pass on through.

All I have is Basic Cable (20 channels), but I have an HD tv (1080p).  I can't get in this channel in HD?  Comcast said I would have to get their $80 package to get this channel, that is highway robbery.

All you need is an HD over the air antenna.  Probably $20-30.  Our engineers would help you out and steer you in the right direction.  Call during regular business hours.

what was showing itsself subtly on the watervapor satellite is now showing itsself very vividly on the Topeka radar just west of wichita going NE. This I believe is the main event folks. I don't see any reason why this will fall apart before it gets here and i believe that strong winds and hail will be a severe threat from this line of storms.

Thank you

Jeremy, I sent you several pictures of the aftermath here in Western Shawnee.  That first line that prompted the first of the sirens in JoCo went directly over head and I have never seen such wind, rain , and hail.  Through it all we had 41 going on all TVs, the weather radio constantly blaring, and everything important in the basement closet under the stairs, so all we had to do was run and hide.

Thanks to the entire team for wonderful, sane, no-nonsense coverage.

Send them to Gary's email address too please.  Thanks!

chieffan07 a tornado watch maybe issued or extended passed. FOR SURE some watch will be but I believe the tornado threat will take a dive over the next few hours after these two super cells to our south fall apart or take a turn to the right or do what they do. but because of the environment that the squall line will be in it will probably be another tornado watch but I wouldn't worry too much about tornadoes with the next round

I think that there will be a tornado threat all night.  It may not be as much of a tornado outbreak as we just went through, but the chance is still there!  Large hail and strong winds will likely be the best threat.

dougbce-  Just checked that radar again.  Storm i was watching has all but disintegrated. So has the squall line.  However, just to keep things interesting, there's a new squall line from Wichita to Emporia that has quite a bit of power to it.  You can see it explode into being in about a half hour's time.

Sorry about that link Jeremy.  Didn't know it was an issue.

I'm using the wunderground radar loop since it's not getting pounded by too many users at the moment.  Choose the radar out by Topeka to get a good look at the new squall line.

Much as I'd like to hang around, I still have to work tomorrow.  Have a good night all.

As far as I can tell the squall line in central KS is the last round because it's forming on the front which is proceeding forward as far as I know. Jeremy or Gary could fill us in on the progression of the front. but as long as the front as proceeding along that line of thunderstorms it's the last round but if the line outruns the front then new storms always could form on the front again. again if anyone is aware of the new low and cold front/dryline progression let me/us know.
