The Final Round Nears...

Stay tuned to your NBC Action News station for severe weather updates all night long!  Please send in your storm photos and we will try to use them on the blog and on the newscasts!

*****12:04 a.m. update from NWS on something people have asked about.*****

Very interesting phenomena just occurring over srn parts of the KC metro. Supercells to the south have "vaporized" and caused a modified heat burst to move across the srn half of the KC metro. SW winds have gusted 20-40 mph, and dewpoints have "tanked". This is only a temporary effect, but interesting nonetheless. Timing of the squall line into wrn Johnson KS/Leavenworth is around 1am or so.

******************************************************************

Several rounds of showers and thunderstorms have swept thru the region tonight.  Severe weather reports have ranged from hail around the size of baseballs north of Altamont in Daviess County to a couple of tornado reports near Belton, MO.  The final line of thunderstorms is now developing and heading toward the viewing area.  This line will sweep thru between 1-5am and will likely produce damaging winds and hail.  We can't totally rule out an isolated tornado, but right now that appears to be unlikely.

Here is a look at LIVE:ESP and the storms that are just west of Topeka and Emporia moving northeast.

The surface low is near Wichita, KS and can be seen on the surface map.  It will move along the front that is located from Manhattan to Wichita.  Behind this front the cool air will work in by morning.

As soon as this squall line clears the area we are looking at drier air and cooler temperatures to work into the viewing area for Friday.  Thanks for making this a record setting day on the blog...we have had ten of thousands of hits in the past 24 hours!

Please check the previous blog entries for some of the storm photos.

There is a tornado warning for the county to the west of Emporia.  Will they get the more severe stuff from that line since their air is more unstable due to them not getting the storms from earlier?

your welcome Jeremy I love this blog. I'm concerned that the line isn't building north and the south side of the line is meager but i'm hoping when it enters the moisture pool in our area it'll strengthen. I love thunderstorms and severe weather season. I don't want anyone to get hurt but I would love to get woken up in the middle of the night...if I even go to bed.

caliguy, something to calm your nerves. number one the chance of actually getting hit by a tornado is galactic. 2 the storm that is supposedly tornadic right now is in a complex that is linear those types of storms, if they do produce a tornado produce VERY weak tornadoes I'm talking shingles and chimney tops blown off yeah it sucks to repair but NOTHING homeflattening and SO rarely deadly or harmful as long as your inside. Nerves calmed?

guys...those of you who are scared of thunderstorms...what I used to do when I was scared of thunderstorms. I would put on a CD of my favorite music and just rock out to it and watch the lightning and it was so Neat. if you cant beat your fear you kinda have to rock out to your fear if you know what I'm saying...so if you have an iPod or a Discman with headphones...charge it up and get it ready and just watch the lightning while listening to your favorite music and you'll feel so good. it worked for me and now I am ADDICTED to thunderstorms and severe weather, I mean look how many times I've blogged today, this stuff is my life. let it be yours too.

I can't explain this at all...a mini dry line has moved through parts of the area. Dewpoint is down to 43 in the Olathe area(new century air center) and the wind is the critical thing, the wind is NOW out of the south WEST temp 73? this is weird this could be temporary I don't know I haven't seen this before. I thought the dry line retreated back toward wichita when the storms fired...not making much sense to me.

Also, Andrew Stafford, that would put my nerves to rest and I would be able to go to bed if the Tornado Watch was replaced by a T-Storm watch. So I really hope you are right.

I did notice something odd walking the dog just now. It was farily warm out - low to mid 70s, I'd guess - but every few yards or so I'd walk through this little pool of cooler air. Well I was at work when you guys had most of your(fun), although on my break, I did see a beautiful Cumulonimbus cloud to my south and east on my break around 5:40 ish or so. hope the tornadoes behaved them selfs and danced around as much property as possible and did not hurt anybody.  Well it looks like the line is erupting to my west I hope I get in on this somewhat, heavy rain and crashing lightning please;)

BTW, on your bug that you have on the top of the screen during severe weather, you may seriously want to think about changing either the color of your Tornado Watch, or the color of your Tornado Warning polygon, both are red and the warning polygon didn't stick out very well to me, I don't know if anybody else noticed this but I thought I should bring it up, other than that EXCELLENT work on your coverage, top notch, great radar tools, warning info, and the use of the Scout Cameras to show the effect of the cells!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I am in a wheelchair so a low lying ditch wouldn't be good. Lol. As of now I just stay up as long as possible and try to stay as informed as possible. If something starts to get close I leave and go to somewhere that is under ground, like a family members house or a parking garage. Other than that I just pray that something doesn't happen.

As far as you being sorry, don't worry about it. I know that other people enjoy this stuff and I am sure that I would too if it wasn't such a big safty concern.

ok i just looked at Nexrad again...nighttime ground clutter is increasing and it's definitely flowing fast from se to nw so that should pull our dewpoints back up intime for the storms to get here. that's my thinking as for the anomaly maybe it's a remnant of the old dryline before the new one formed back by wichita where the squall line fired. Straight line winds can be terrible.  Jonathan, you need to check out my pics in my comment above.  The pics show what 80-mile-an-hour straight line winds can do.

That bow echo is moving towards the metro rapidly.

It says this storm has 80 mph winds and it's headed right for Olathe, I feel we're going to be at the max point of that bow. I'm anxious I admit! Glad to have some people to share it with. Yeeks!

Very strong wind, some small hail, and torrential rains now impacting the area near N. Oak & Barry Rd. - Power is out to at  least our entire block, computer is running on backup power right now. Based on past storms I would say we had a 80 to 90 MPH wind gust out of this thing. Unsure of damage due to the fact power is out, though.
