NBC Action Weather Blog

Tough forecast the next few days

Good morning bloggers,  The 7-Day is now updating again on the website, for the time being anyway and the forecast may be changing for today.    Make sure to tune into NBC Action News Midday at 11:00am for the latest information.

We have made it to the time of the year where moisture is going to be available for every disturbance.  Up until now, we needed strong forcing aloft to provide the energy to produce precipitation:  thunderstorms, rain, snow, etc.  A day like today, just a few weeks ago, would have likely produced just some high and middle clouds and no precipitation as a weak upper level storm approaches, with the main upper level low still way down to our southwest.  So, it is a very tricky forecast.  There are some signs of an increasing area of showers to our southwest and we will monitor this closely.

There is an upper level low developing near the Arizona/Mexico border.  Below, you can see the forecast track of this storm:

If this were a possible snowstorm heading our way, weather forecasters would be driving themselves nuts.  When you have to predict the exact amount of snow, then you are setting yourself up for failure.  You may get it right in one location, but not for many others.  It is different when it comes to forecasting rain.  I know you are still expecting us to get it right, but to predict the exact amount is just as hard as forecasting snow.  Right now, I am forecasting at least 1 inch of rain for most of us, with 2 to 3 inches possible.  This would be like predicting 10 inches of snow with 20 or 30 inches possible.  You would never let us get away with a forecast like this.  Or, more realistically, if we told you that 2 to 3 inches of snow would fall, with 10 to 15 inches possible, what would you think?  Let's say only 0.65" of rain falls, or 2.75" falls by Thursday morning.  Would you consider the forecast correct?

Here is the rainfall forecast from the overnight GFS model:

The track of the upper low is very important.  Also, how strong will it be when it moves into Missouri?  If it maintains some strength and tracks just a bit farther north, then we will be in the very heavy rain.  But, a slightly farther south track and we won't get much rain on Wednesday.  This is what we will try to figure out on our newscasts today and tonight on NBC Action News.

We will update the blog later today, so check back in.  Have a fantastic day.

Gary

It is really annoying that your forecast still won't update to the website. Are your tech guys going to get that fixed anytime soon? Until they do, can you post the current 7 day forecast in the blog?  ****** We understand, please be patient.  I'll try and add it.  Brett

I agree with Kimberly, it looks really bad when you still have that outdated 7-day forecast up. ***** It is proving harder than expected.  Brett

So do we not have much in the way of a severe weather threat today?  **** Not much, only a slight a risk, and to me it seems later tonight.  Having said that, this time of the year, you can't rule out an isolated t-storm with gusting winds or hail.  Brett

Gary, if you predict 2 inches of rain and we get .5, no complaints here. Your forecasts are right most of the time. If you miss on the
low side, that is better than predicting sprinkles and getting a monsoon.  I won't read your forecast back to you if it is wrong.

I think it's funny that there is concern over being accurate over HOW MUCH rain we might get.  Some of us out here only care if our plans for a day may need changing if it could be raining.  Computer problems, I have been missing the accurate forecast online since I've been missing the TV news the last few days, but understandable that computer problems are messing with our day.  Good idea to put it in the blog--- ***** Still working on it, but getting closer, I think!  Brett

Thanks Brett!  I am okay with some hail and a little wind.  I'm just not in a big hurry to spend the night with the sirens going off again! :)

Again you guys are awesome and from my perspective need to be told that more often. :) Have a great day weather team!  ***** Wow, you have made our day!  The NBC Action Weatherplus Team.

Do you have any insight as to the precip situation around the Royals game tonight?  I am hopeful we'll get a chance to get the game in before it opens up overnight.  Thanks!

Team - LOL, 5/14-5/18 for the wet period including the "signature storm" is showing up on time on the GFS.

Pretty cool.

--------------------

As the pattern continues to cycle, and weaken, it is still fascinating how the features continue to look the "same".  In other words, the storm systems are still directly related to what has happened since this year's LRC began in October.

Exactly, Mom. When the people who make cracks about the forecast, long range or otherwise, or complain if something doesn't come together exactly as predicted can start making their own personal predictions and consistantly be 100% (we can expect no less from them if we expect it from the weather team right?) then maybe we should change the channel.
But that won't ever happen, because no one is ever 100% consistently about anything, however the KSHB weather team comes the closest to perfection, so my family will continue to be loyal to this blog and the Weather Team. They always do an excellent job, despite the critics who pick at anything, and again, their severe weather coverage last week was perfection and par none to anything I have ever seen.

---------------

Wow, thank you so much!  Today, alone, is a very challenging day to forecast the weather.

Yeah, I too am curious about the evening...will the Royals play? Can we mow yards before it rains? ***** It is highly probable!  Rain chances are dwindling.  Brett

I have been getting rain showers off and on since last night. My hubby is at the KC Zoo with a bunch of 7th graders...he is hoping the big rains hold off until they are done at 3pm....any chance of that being the case? He has his umbrella just in case. So glad to see the 7 days fixed on the web page...man do I ever rely on that for dressing my kids for school every morning. Have a great day!!

Monica,

The 7 day is fixed and we are going to unveil our new weather page later this month that I firmly believe we will all be able to enjoy and be proud of.

And, the rain is holding off so far up here.

I have been out of touch for the last few weeks because of an illness and death in the family, and now we have no TV since the storm hit on Friday morning (DirecTV can't come out until Saturday).  I am planning on planting my first attempt at a garden (just snow peas, tomatos and green beans this year)...would it be safe to plant them now, or is there still a chance of a frost or two moving in?

----------------

There may be one more chance for a frost Sunday or Monday, as yet another strong cold front moves through.  But we are getting very close to our latest frost ever.  So, the chance is extremely low.

Emmysmom: the main thing to worry about now is the wet soil. If the soil is so wet that it sticks to your tools, it's too wet to work, and too wet to plant. As long as the soil is dry enough, you can plant tomatoes or anything in it.

You're probably too late for snow peas. They are a cool weather crop that is planted in spring for early summer, or planted in summer for fall harvest.

Thanks for the tips, RDub (and for the response, Gary).  I can definitely use them!!
That's a bummer about the snow peas...I swear the package says to plant them after the threat of frost is gone.  Maybe I'll just try it anyway and see what happens...if they dont work I'm only out the cost of seeds.

RDub said:

If you plant the seeds now the plants will grow, but then wilt in the hot summer, probably before you get any peas.  You might want to save the peas and plant them in August for a fall harvest.

You guys do a fabulous job. You are damned if you do and damned if you don't so I feel for you. I get annoyed when you guys talk potential (we might get a huge snowstorm, we might get severe weather) because then when it doesn't happen I am dissapointed. I know that you have to put things out there, but I start looking forward to the excitement of snow or a storm. I would not want your job because I am sure you get a lot of blame! :) I just think your blog is cool and I love your Weather team. I appreciate all you do, even when you get it wrong! ;)

-----------------

We don't get it wrong that often.  Today is a frustrating day, however.  I just did another blog entry.
