Tuesday night update

Good late evening everyone,

The new NAM model and the RUC model both are trying to have the upper low, now near the Arizona Mexico border, move out close enough to Kansas City to put us in the rain shield. As a result the NAM is now predicting 3 inches of rain here on Wednesday.  This is still a situation that we are going to know a lot more about early in the morning tomorrow.

And, the thunderstorms heading our way don't have the energy necessary to make me too concerned for severe thunderstorms overnight. We may have a strong line of thunderstorms before sunrise, if they hold together, but the threat of severe thunderstorms is very slight.  We will continue to monitor the situation overnight.  The thing to watch, if the upper low will be a bit farther north, is the line of thunderstorms west and north of us will weaken as the flow aloft backs as the storm approaches.

I will have a special POWERCAST, our new HD high resolution computer model as we describe this developing weather event.  I am 50/50 on whether the upper low comes close enough to us.  I will make a final decision on my thoughts during the 10 PM newscast.

Brett Anthony will be here overnight to monitor the thunderstorms moving in from the west and northwest.

Gary

Gary,

From my house here in Jefferson County I have a clear line of sight well into Pottawatomie County.  Beyond that I can clearly see the storms out by Wamego and Ft.Riley/Manhatten.  There seems to be a very large amount of lightening with these storms, at least from my b=vantage point anyhow.  These individual cells must be tracking in a generally eastward direction because the lightening appears in the same areas over and over.  Anyhow, I went active on the SpotterNetwork.  There isn't a lot of traffic on the stormspotter radio bands out in that area at the time.  Several counties have  their spotters out at this time.  I doubt that I will be up pat 1AM.  I'll just sleep and wait for the weather radio alarm to get me back on my feet.  Our dewpoint is now 58.2 and slowly falling along with the pressure and winds are dying down as they all do with the setting of the sun.  There is 1 spotter just east of Newton and a line of very heavy storms.  That would be stormchasealive.com-1,  I am sure he will have some very accurate reports as this line continues to lift to the NE.

opeterson-the pink arrows indicate the areas where(in this case a severe thunderstorm watch) the watch has been cancelled.

Gary, glad to see you mention Gas, KS on your 6 pm newscast.  I was raised there and my dad and mom still live there.  I went to school in Iola and lived in the same house in Gas for 15 years....

Now, for bonus points...how did Gas get it's name?  ;)  Thanks for the shout-out...

And, sorry, I have to do it....if ever you're driving on Highway 54 east of Iola headed towards Ft. Scott, don't blink or you'll pass Gas! :)

Since it looks like the new GFS also has 2-3" inches of rain for the KC area like the NAM does, would you say that 1"+ of rain is likely in Olathe?

Thanks,
Eswar

Eswar,

It certainly seems that way.  The new RUC is also farther north with the upper low.  I think we will have the heaviest rain very close by.  We will try to finally make an official rainfall forecast in the morning, but at least 1 inch, with much more possible.

Well I am glad to hear that there probably won''t be any severe weather tonight.  I might actcually get some sleep if I can tear myself away from this blog long enough! :) lol.  I hope I didn't just jinx us....Anyway, I have a question about saturday..I am helping my work out with a fundraiser this weekend on Sat. afternoon from 1-3 what are the chances of rain then?   I work for Healthy Families Counseling and Support and we are taking donations for one of the groups they have for babies.  We are taking baby supplies, toys, money..ect.  We will be at the Hy-Vee on Englewood and the one in Gladstone on RT. 1 on Sat...

Hey   all4seasons ,
I lived in Laharpe for 12 years, all my kids graduated from Moran, so I am very familiar with Gas, Ks and it was named for the abundant amount of natural gas found there.

So this upcoming rain is making me nervous.  We received some minor damage on the our roof in Friday morning's storm, looks from the street that there is just some shingles missing from the right corner of the roof, but I believe I still see tarpaper, not just the roof wood.  We didn't tarp it because it wasn't that bad, and I've been told by someone that if you can see the tarpaper, we are probably okay.  Does anyone know if this is true?  This "heavy rain" forecast is scaring me.

Why does it seem that thunderstorms are just randomly forming to our north and moving away, while the ones that were heading towards us appear to be weakening?

We about 20 minuets ago we had a pretty heavy downpour then the wind kicked in from the west-northwest (maybe a 50 m.p.h. gust) lighting flashes, but not much thunder that I could hear, and now faint lightning to the north and east with some stars!!!
