Rain Today...Wind Tonight....Meso discussion

Good afternoon bloggers,

The previous entry is below.  The SPC has put us in a meso discussion as you can see below.  There is the potential for strong to severe thunderstorms this afternoon as this powerful storm begins developing.  Large hail would be the main threat.   We will be watching it closely for you, and update the blog if we see strong thunderstorms developing:

Previous entry below:

Watch NBC Action News HD today at 8am, 5, & 10pm as we track showers and thunderstorms on LIVE:ESP!

Good day bloggers!  The weekend is here...but so is another storm system.  As Gary mentioned earlier this week the longest stretch of dry days this Spring stands at 3!

Light rain and sprinkles are already showing up on LIVE:ESP this morning across parts of the area.  These showers will likely weaken and pass thru the area this morning.  The main area of showers and thunderstorms will develop and move in during the afternoon.  Best rain chances will occur from about 3-9pm.  With cloudy to mostly cloudy skies in place today high temperatures will likely reach the mid 60s in most spots...maybe even cooler if skies remain cloudy.  The clouds and cool temperatures should help to keep the severe weather threat to our south today...despite a strong cold front pushing into the region.  If sunshine would break out for an extended time(2+ hours) then the slight risk area would possibly move farther north.  The slight risk area from this morning's outlook does include parts of the southern viewing area.  Main threat with these storms would be hail and strong winds.

Below is severe weather threat for today.

A major severe weather outbreak is likely from parts of Missouri to Kentucky and along parts of the Gulf Coast.  This will be something for weather enthusiasts to keep an eye on.

The cold front will blast through our area this evening and behind the front winds will switch to the west-northwest and increase to 25-50mph!  This will be one of those nights where the house rattles and creaks as the wind howls.  Wind Advisories are in place for areas north of Kansas City, but will likely be extended across the entire area later today.

Here is the surface forecast map for early Sunday from the HPC.

Have a great day and make sure to have an alternate plan 'B' indoor activity planned for today in case rain impacts your outdoor plans.

morning jeremy... say, is the rain moving in this evening going to be widespread and heavy or isolated showers? have a great day. thanks! - mike

Mike,

Not sure if the rain will be heavy...but the rain area should be fairly widespread.  A lot of the models I've looked at for Kansas City average about 0.20-0.25".  If thunderstorms develop it could be more though.

Personally, I am loving the cooler weather. I have been able to take the dog for a walk almost everyday and not feel as though I need to take a shower immediately when I get home due to it being 95 with 100% humidity. Don't get me wrong, I like warm weather, just not Kansas City Scorching hot with ridiculous humidity. I am from Denver and after being here for 6 years I still have not gotten used to the summer humidity. I hope this weather sticks around for at least another month, why not all summer, minus all the rain.

Of course we'll see just what area may get 37. I've hunkered up recently expecting a cold cold morning just to go out and discover it 50 when a possible frost was being forecast the night before.

My folks are coming out the last week of May to help me move. Imagine the shock when they come from the 90's in Phoenix to.....this. Usually they come out for whichever holiday, Thanksgiving or Christmas, I don't have to work at the hospital. So they always see it gray and cold here. Now here they come in May, and will see it gray and cold here.

95 and DRY I can easily handle but I agree 95 with 100% humidity is a rough.

We had a cooler then average summer years back, I can't remember if it was 99 or 2000 maybe the team can offer some comparisons to past weather.

I do remember we hardly used our air conditioning all summer.

Even when we do use our central air we set it at 78.

Fairway, when you have to wear a coat in May, sorry but the world is a-tilt. It makes me wonder if this is the year H***  freezes over...in the summer. As for the humidity, yeah I notice it here because I am from the desert, but after spending alot of time in Florida  and always in July, and some in New Orleans too, the humidity here seems more like an afterthought.  I suppose it is all persepctive but I'm concerned about mine...and the fact I turn blue from the cool weather LOL

It makes me depressed and sad. Its Freakin May already. Personally I want sunny skies with temps in the High 70s-low80s. That what it needs to be in May. Mr. Steve the crops are growing, although slowly.  The weather has had an effect.  Most of us do not have our corn in yet, some have already layed their beans.  A neighbor of mine got his 240 acres of corn down 2 weeks ago and it just popped up in the last 2 days.  If the rain calms down he will head off the heat when that corn pollinates.  But if the rain continues at this rate the rain will mess his crop up.  The wheat is fantastic, it turned out to be nearly ideal growing conditions.  The hay crop is looking really good also.  Most people if it is dry enough will be out cutting in the next 2 weeks and we could easily get 2 cuttings for the big round bales this year.  You know Thursday night there in the city you guys got about .25" of rain.  Out here in Jefferson County KS we got 1.59".  This year is not much out of the ordinary.  Its like this about once every 7 years or so.

I can't recall ever complaining about the heat because you suffered through 3 or 4 months of 100's and then had 70's in the winter and 80's in the late spring. Ya gotta take the bad to get the overwhelming good.
As for all the rainy days...well, there can be too much of a good thing. We need enough to sustain life but we don't need to go back to the dinosaur age and become one big lake!

I too heard the weather radio give a tornado watch for some of the surrounding counties including Johnson Co, KS.  It will be from 11 a.m. until 7 p.m. tonight.  Everyone should just keep it in mind.   As for those of you complaining about moving outta Kansas...have you lived anywhere else in the country before?  Yes, this Spring seems pretty depressing.  It is my first Spring here.  Back on the East Coast it is really nice this time of year...but let me tell you...most of the summer's are rainy.  I can't tell you how many summer's and summer holiday's were a wash out.  And most of my family has moved to the Phoenix area...I've been told it gets hotter and hotter earlier and earlier in the season now.  I personally love that!  But realistically the weather patterns are changing all over the place no matter where you live.  How about the Florida frost this past year?  Let's all just hope for the best.  At least we're not living in Alaska where it's dark half of the year!  I had family move away from there recently too...

Just wondered when to get the firewood cut again as this has been one of the coolest, wettest springs in a long time here it seems. I love it, it is great keeping the A/C shut down and the heat as well. Maybe we can all save some $ to throw in the gas tank this way.

Spring here usually means most of us are beginning gardening, enjoying sun and warmth and nice days, mowing twice a week, getting busy with outdoor projects for the most part by now.  Not thinking, "What is this? Go away! When it is going away!"

I think the worst part is the weather has been so nasty since last Dec for so long. We didn't even have our typical warm spells this past five months. Just non stop ice, snow, sleet, rain, clouds, wind, etc. I suppose we should be grateful to not be in a severe drought type situation.
