Storm Recap...Happy Mother's Day!

Watch NBC Action News HD at 8am & 10pm as we will have live reports from the hardest hit areas of southwest Missouri!

Deadly storms pushed through the Plains and Midwest last evening killing at least 19 people.  These storms produced strong, long track tornadoes and some of the damage appears that the strongest tornadoes may be rated EF 3 or 4.  Some of our bloggers had family in the path of these storms and our thoughts and prayers go out to everyone affected.  I want to send a huge thank you to Jacob of Lee's Summit as a relative of his that lives in southwest Missouri shared her tornado experience last night on NBC Action News.

Here is a list storm reports on Saturday from the SPC.

Our lead storm chaser Sean Wilson once again was where the action was located.  Sean appeared on our morning show this morning sharing if video of the storm.  We will air more of Sean's video tonight at 10pm and also during our newscasts on Monday.  You can always see Sean's chase information at www.blownawaytours.com

Here in the metro winds gusted to around 50 mph overnight.  The peak wind gust at KCI was 47 mph!  The strong non-thunderstorm winds did down trees in spots and produced some damage to mobile homes in east Kansas City.

For Mother's Day we can expect winds to gradually let up, but still expect winds in the neighborhood of 20-35 mph this morning...and then diminishing to 15 mph late this afternoon.  Highs with sunshine should be in the low 60s.  And tonight will be clear with temps in the lower 40s.

The entire NBC Action Weather Plus team wishes all the Mom's a Happy Mother's Day!

Jeremy - the storm siren went off 3 times at 99th & Lowell in OP between 1-1:30 am this morning and scared us. Does anyone know why it was going off?  It gave us quite a scare! ************** The sirens weren't suppose to go off. Kind of bad timing with the howling winds. I'm sure a few people were upset. Well all one can say is it has been one hell of a last six months mid Nov to mid May. If you did not receive the sleet, snow, ice, frzing rain, clouds for days on end, tonados, hail, heavy rain, tornados, severe straight line winds they were occurring a mere 50 miles from you.!!!!!

I hope the chances of rainfall out of the forcast early next week we need 7-10 days of dry weather for the farmers and construction crews.

Still no real heat for 15 days which gets us almost through May without running the AC that only JUNE, JULY, AUG and half of SEP or 115 day of high power bills.

Unless it totally stops rainng we will not get to 100 this summer so much green to absorb the sunlite.

The summer solistace is only 40 days away then we begin to creep towards winter...Ted ************* Don't remind people that the days will get shorter in just over a month. We've barely exited winter...at least it seems. If we save on the electric bill I'd say we'll spend more on yard care/lawn mowing if it stays cooler and wet. Jeremy

Where's the best chance for Severe Weather? I'm about ready to go with Sean on a tour, but I want a good tornado set-up. Should of gone last night. :(

Our Prayers go out to everybody who was affected by these storms.

Happy Mother's Day

Southern Plains may see something Tuesday?  It looks to be pretty quiet around here this week.

I'm personally LOVING this very cool spring.  I DREAD when temps get to the upper 80s or higher.  Hopefully by the time it does get uncomfortably warm it'll just be a short wait until fall.  :-)  I actually looked up snow storms on YouTube wishing we'd be able to have one right now.  LOL

I'll pass on the snow right now.  But you can tell us about it:)

The potential doesn't look low on Tuesday Jeremy.  Surface based capes of 2-2.5K at 0Z, dewpoints in the lower to middle 60's, temps in the lower to middle 70's, the surface front approaching the area in the early evening, little to no convective inhibition, changing winds with height provinding verticle shear, and a jet max moving through the area providing a widespread lifting mechanism as well as verticle speed shear.  The NAM may be overdoing it, and it's not likely a classic tornado setup, but it is a decent severe weather setup.

*****************

A decent severe weather setup...but I'm not convinced the worst of the weather makes it this far north.  SPC has KC on the edge of the slight risk.  I think the southern Plains are the place to be again.  I'm interested in seeing how far north the higher dew points get.  If you believe one of our in-house models the dew point hits 70 on Tuesday!  So the potential does look low for KC...or the SPC would have the slight risk farther north.

I love this cooler/wet weather....This year's morel mushroom season has lasted much longer than the average season...I have been out the last three days, and have found several fresh, and growing morels....The cooler temperatures at night kept the morels from growing, and aging...The day time temps. make them grow, and age.

Get out there and look...there are still many morels to find!

Beautiful day here. 61 degrees, sunny, light wind, not a cloud in the sky. :-D So different from yesterday afternoon. That tornado was too close for comfort.

A friend of mine lives in Granby, MO and lost almost everything. He's happy to be alive though. My neighbor's boss was in one of the car's on the highway that flipped.

Our local weathercastor mentioned something about a "right handed tornado". I think he said that it was one large twister when it was in Baxter KS and at some point it broke into two. He said that the right handed one is the stronger one and the left die's out. Heard anything about this?

I would like to see a map of where the tornados went. Also, where was Sean in SW Missouri? I checked his site but I don't think he's updated with info from last night yet.

Thanks

I thought I would leave a quick comment and then update the Blog on my website. Sorry it's taken so long to give an update on yesterday's storms in SW Missouri. I got home about three o'clock this morning and am worn out.

Yesterday turned out to be a terrifying day for the residents of south eastern Kansas, south western Missouri, north eastern Oklahoma, and most of Arkansas.

I chose Joplin Mo. as the "Target Area" for yesterdays chase, which actually put us close to the  tornado that hit the Four Corners area. Probably an EF-3 or 4 tornado.

We intercepted this supercell in Independence Ks. and were on the north side of it as it produced the tornado that hit Picher Oklahoma (My family on my dads side is from Picher). We stayed with this tornado and tried to work our way to the south side of the SC but couldn't because of the rain, large hail, and speed of the storm. We followed it as it crossed I-44 and then ran into debris on the highway (71 hwy) that caused us to take a detour, which put us farther behind the tornado. We never did make enough progress to get into position to get a good look at the tornado. The road network, hills, and trees make it nearly impossible to chase storms in SW Missouri, on into Arkansas.

I'm going to view the video to see if we ever got a good picture of the tornado.

This was one BAD storm and hope we don't see anymore in populated areas. This one reminded me of the Greensburg tornado.

My heart and prayers go out to those affected by these storms and tornadoes.

Hey Kristi
I'm in the sw part of Joplin in Jasper county. About 6 blocks to Newton County. The twister was to the north of Neosho ~ between Joplin and Neosho ~ I think. I haven't found a good map yet that pinpoints exactly where it went. That'll probably come out in a day or so.

Some of the pictures are amazing. Nothing left but the foundation. I'm considering installing a trap door for my crawl space. We have a very clean, bug free crawl space. I need to figure out how much (feet wise is underground)

I really want an above ground shelter but I know having one installed would be $$.
I know, more info than you asked. Still slightly rattled from yesterday.

simplykristi said:

Hi Lorie,
I don't blame you for being rattled.  I know someone who had a storm shelter built.  This is down at the lake.  They told my friends and I we could use it if there was ever a tornado down there.

Is that the same tornado that went thru Picher and Quapaw?

Lorie in SW MO said:

I don't think so. I think there were three (or more?) at the time. The twisters/storms were moving directly east which is highly unusual for us. Most everything we get follows I-44. So when Tulsa, OK gets something, we get it.
So anyways, there was one down in OK that hit Picher. There was one to the north that went thru Carthage, MO (near where my husband works), and then a fairly big one that went thru Baxter Springs, KS. Sometime in there the Baxter Springs one split (?) (what I heard from Meterologist) and the stronger one went thru Seneca, Granby, north of Neosho, etc.

Not looking forward to Tuesday but I'm not even going to start to looking at the info out there until Monday.

Yeah I will make a prediction Tuesday morning before my mom goes in for her bronchoscopy, which is at noon

Before I forget, my dad came home from the hospital today.  We don't know his chemo schedule.  The oncologist's office will call us in the morning.  I am assuming Dad will have radiation tomorrow afternoon.  I am thinking chemo will start tomorrow.. Tuesday at the very latest.

I'm glad he's home and I'm hoping the chemo isn't bad. I have a pretty good friend going thru chemo and most day's it's not too bad. There was only one day when they gave her a heavy dose was it really bad.  Good luck.

Do you like to read? My husband and I really like the book by Lance Armstrong "It's not about the bike". We find it encouraging and have our own copy. We usually buy a copy for friends who are going thru cancer.

I'll be thinking of you and your family this week.

Thanks  The oncologist gave me the names of the chemo drugs that they are planning on using unless it has changed.

I love to read.  I have Lance's two books plus his mom's book.  I like all three books.

Thanks for thinking of my family this week.

Northern Canada sounds like an ideal place for you since you apparently don't like comfortable weather and prefer to freeze.  I'll buy you a plane ticket to anywhere in Canada you want to go and in turn we'll take some warm weather here that we can enjoy.  Send me a post card ;)

RickXTN, its quite strange is'nt it? The number of people in this blog that thrive on cold, snow and crappy weather in general, there's nothing wrong with having all four seasons but come on, jeeeesh, we're 1/2 way through spring for cryin' out loud! At least we have a start, their latest 7-day shows 3 out of 7 days at or above 70, with 2 of them at 69......  global warming?..............

Matt P said:

JFTown, low 60s is comfortable.  Like RickXTN said, upper 80s and beyond is getting too warm.  Greg, snow isn't "crappy weather".  This area has three-plus seasons.  I wouldn't call what goes on here a true winter.  21-plus inches of snow is a major snowstorm in many parts of the country.  Once the temperature gets below 50-55 here, there's not a soul out in entire neighborhood.  It's like the ice age has taken over.
Winter here is actually pretty comfortable.  Brutally cold temperatures around here are not that frequent nor are major snowstorms. When we have 15 straight days of 95 degrees or above like we did last summer, that's what I call "worse than uncomfortable".

We have had our air conditioner on this season so far. I don't know what people are talking about when they say it hasn't been warm. It is so dang humid and sticky. I feel horrible for the people who lost lives/property in yesterdays storms. Do they not have basements, not have warning???

The tornado watch was out hours before the tornadoes hit.  Whenever there is a watch in place people need to pay attention.  Whether it is thru TV, weather radio, cell phone, etc.

Matt P, I say tomatoe, you say tomaatoe, most folks around here like warm weather in the spring, that's all I'm trying to say. Maybe you should move to a new neighborhood, I see people out and about in my neighborhood year round! Can't wait for SUMMER!

Matt P said:

Greg, I say "tomato", not to be confused with Dan Quayle's "potatoe".  LOL!!! If you see people out year-round in your neighborhood, it's definitely more the exception than the rule.  I've had several people say that when the temperatures get a little cool people stay inside here.  Ths 60s is warm, not above the average for this area, but still warm.  Lawns are green and growing, which they don't do in cold weather.  The 60s and 70s are comfortable and warm.

JReeder, I am not sure where you found those CAPEs...can you share?  I haven't found anything over 500 J/kg for SCAPE.  If you look at what you typed with the high moisture content and the temps, think about the RH values and the likely cloud cover.

Where is surface instability going to come from without seeing the sun?  Also, some of the soundings are showing a decent cap.  I am not buying it, but think that unless we get north of 75 degrees, it will be hard to get the cloud cover to burn off.

But..if it does..then we will be needing to watch for sure, as all the other ingredients will be available - to your point above.

******************

The forecast is a challenge...like normal.  Various models have dew points from about 53 to 70 on Tuesday.  I think we'll just have to watch the Gulf Coast states on Monday and how quickly the moisture starts moving north.
