High pressure, rain chance Thursday, and the weekend forecast

Good morning NBC Action Weather Bloggers,

The weather is calming down, and possibly drying out.  For the first time this year we may actually have to consider watering the lawn.  Maybe not quite yet, as it may rain tonight and Thursday, but after tomorrow's storm goes by we are going to go into dry northwest flow aloft with the jet stream shifting off to the northeast of us.  This will allow it to warm up for at least a few days.  The jet stream will shift back to the south within a week, however, so the dry weather should last only about 7 or 8 days.  The longest dry spell we have had this entire year has been 7 days, so let's see if it really does last that long.  We are just now going into the climatologically wettest time of the year, May 15th to June 15th.  So, it will be difficult to stay dry for long.

Look below at the surface forecast for 4 PM today:

Air blows away from high pressure, and towards low pressure.  High pressure, this morning, is expanding across Nebraska and Iowa, and will provide north winds and a nice day with highs today in the upper 60s to lower 70s.  It is going to be nice.

There is an upper level storm spinning over the southwestern United States this morning and moving our way.  It is causing a surface low to develop way down near the Mexico border.  Where will the upper low and surface low track early on Thursday?  The track of the upper low will decide whether we stay dry on Thursday, or if rain will spread in from the south.  Look at the GFS forecast for 1 AM tonight (below):

The upper low is weakening, but on last nights GFS, is ejecting out of the southwest across northern Oklahoma. This track would definitely bring rain into our area tonight and during the first half of Thursday.  But, this track is still somewhat in question.  And, the strength of the weakening upper level low is also uncertain.  We will likely be able to pin down the track and rain chances as we move through the day. So, watch NBC Action News for all of the details at 11 AM this morning, and then at 5, 6, and 10 PM tonight as we work on some special weather graphics to describe this weather pattern.

Speaking of weather patterns.  Monday night at 10 PM, my boss has decided to give us three extra minutes to talk about the summer forecast and the weather pattern.  We will prepare a special segment on the LRC and provide a summer forecast on Monday night.

And, we announce the winner of the Junior Meteorologist contest on the 5 PM newscast Friday evening on our 5 PM newscast.

Have a great day!

Wooo hooo, I can not wait for the nice stretch to begin! Finally I can have some kids over to play, we can bike ride, finish our yard work....really the list can go on and on.

Ya know how I have not been able to get my weather radio to work due to poor tower coverage down here....well I set up my cell phone as a weather alert through "NBCActionNews Weather Alert Service"...anyways we were at the Spring Concert last night and it went off for the Severe Thunderstorm Alert for Linn Co. So I guess I can still have some sort of warning system,  I will just leave my cell phone on at night when I know their is a potential for bad weather.

Well looking forward to today...great weather for the kids and us adults to enjoy. Have a great day all.

Gary,

Thanks for the blog. I enjoy looking at it everyday. You guys at nbc do an excellent job.

I have plans to go to the Royals game tomorrow at 1:00pm and was wondering if the rain will be in town at that point, if it does even come in, or if it will be a decent time for the game.

Thanks for all you do.

Mark

---------------

Mark,

There is still a decent chance that the storm tracks far enough to the south where the rain stays just south of us.  But,  it is close.  We should have more confidence soon.  Either way, it looks like it may be east of us by around 1 PM.

Gary, I think I read yesterday  you saying something about the end of the month into the first week of June being very wet. I am moving June 3rd from Lenexa to Shawnee. This move is traumatic enough for the kids and I, plus the dogs. Please tell me I can have hope for at least one dry day.
Also, my folks are driving from Phoenix the day after Mem Day to help. They are buying a GPS that has the weather updates because driving on 54 through western KS concerns me. I hope the GPS is as accurate as you all are because they are not used to our severe weather, they are used to dust storms and monsoons.

Jeri,

We will just have to see where everything sets up.  But, a small dry spell is due in first.

Monica I've also been using the NBC Weather Alerts on my cellphone and find those much more convenient than programing my weather radio to the proper code.

If anyone has a smartphone with windows mobile and I believe it works on Blackberry devices too, there is software called Weather Radar that is excellent to have.  It's much easier than trying to see the radar through the NWS website on your phone.  Also, it overlays the warnings, you can animate the graphics, zoom in/out, etc.

Was watching Law and Order last night and saw Gary break in at the commercial to talk about the storms a little further south.  Nothing major but how awesome that he would come on just to reassure everyone that the storms are strong but nothing too bad is going on.  If I was down south I sure would have appreciated that!

I am also so so excited for the dry stretch!  Going to The Cure concert on Monday at Starlite and thought for sure we would get stuck with bad weather, sounds like maybe a nice night though.

It is Brock.  Tell your daughter the judges loved her entry.  It was very close, but the viewers voted.  Next year we will try to add in some judges choices as well.

Tell her to please try again next year.  Getting into the top 25 is really a great honor if you think how many kids live in our region.  She is in the top 25 out of 1000s of kids.

wow what a crazy night last night. As some of you know I am with emergency management for Henry County, Mo.  last night we had numerous creeks overflowing their banks, damage to some bridges, gravel road damage, (including right out by my house) and had to close Highway C last night for a while.  I will try to get some pictures to you guys on this crazy event that took place. We had some pea size hail in the western part of Henry County, and of course the entire county just got dumped on with heavy rain.

I know we have a chance for some rain tonight, do you foresee any possible flooding problems again?

an additional thought: Usually flash flooding is caused by heavy rain, but last night we got a lot of rain in a short amount of time, is that why we got so much flash flooding?

--------------

John,

You definitely had some flash flooding with the very heavy thunderstorms in Henry county.  We watched those move across your county on ESP and it was impressive.  Thanks for the reports.

I have a question.  My father talked about a very rainy, cold year that his grandfather had told him about back in 1911-1913 era.  I have thought about that many times this spring since it has still been trying to frost down in the bottoms here as recently as Sunday. (We live south of St. Joseph in a rural area).  I'm just curious whether there are old weather records out there that could substantiate this?

Glad it was a slow weather day. Expecting some nice rain without the yucky stuff.  People around here are extremely stressed out by Sat.'s storm. So many visitations and funerals. Everybody knows somebody that got hit and hit hard. That's how small it is down here.

Even our local, bless his heart, said in the forecast tonight "we're going to get rain but nothing severe is going to come out of it". I'll bet there was a collective sigh.

I learned a new term "Backing Winds"

the way I understand it, it just means Winds from the straight south, but I'm not sure. I forgot to ask that question, I was so in tuned with looking at the radar.

----------------------

Andrew,

Backing winds means that they go from a southwest direction to a south direction. Or, from a south direction they become southeasterly.  If they move in the other direction it is called veering winds. So, when  dry line moves through the winds veer as they shift from south to the southwest.  If the winds veer the conditions are not as favorable for tornadoes, but if they are backing, then the low levels have a better chance of rotation in the updrafts.

----------------

I can't believe what you have just said.  The ECMWF has NOT been the reliable model this season.  The GFS wins most of the time!
