Weekend Warmth...Questions Ahead

Watch NBC Action News Monday Night @ 10 p.m. for your long range summer forecast!

What a great way to start the weekend!  High temperatures in Kansas City were the warmest of 2008!  KCI reached 85 this afternoon and Downtown KC 86.  The record for this date is 90 set in 1939 & tied in 1966...so we were at least within shouting distance of the record.  The 85 at KCI was the warmest day in over 7 months...dating back to October 6 when it was 86.

A surface cold front is about to switch our winds from the west to the northwest this evening.  Behind the front temperatures will be cooler on Sunday, but still in the upper 70s to around 80 in most spots.  Sunday will be another dry day to enjoy the numerous activities going on around the region.

Here is the forecast GFS forecast temperature map for 1 p.m. on Sunday.

Notice the temperatures over the Great Lakes on Sunday...some areas will not make it out of the 40s and 50s.  One of the reasons for this is an on shore flow with surface winds out of the north-northeast blowing off waters that are still around 36-38 degrees in Lake Superior and Lake Michigan!  I clearly remember living in Marquette, MI and how numerous nice Spring days would quickly turn cold with 20+ degree temperature drops just by the wind shifting off the water.  It is very nice to live away from the Great Lakes!

Once we complete this weekend the forecast is going to get pretty tricky.  A large ULL will form in the western/southwestern U.S. and linger for part/most of this week.

Here is the 18Z GFS 500mb forecast for late Wednesday.  Notice the little ridge over Kansas City.

Little disturbances will enter the picture and try to give us a chance of showers and thunderstorms, but as of now the forecast is dry thru Wednesday.  I think that as a warm front lifts north into Monday morning a band of showers and thunderstorms will form somewhere over the Midwest.  So I wouldn't be shocked to see rain enter the picture in places...but I'll keep it dry for now.  These would be elevated thunderstorms as moisture flows up and over the front...while dew points stay fairly low at the surface.

Temperatures will be tricky this week due to the timing of disturbances and associated cloud cover, the position/movement of the ULL, and possible backdoor cold front.  Right now I have sort of a middle ground forecast with mainly 80s.  I think at least one of these days will probably end up in the 70s and maybe one day makes a run at 87+ before the end of the week.  Either way...when the ULL decides to make some progress east it should give us a chance of thunderstorms and that is why there is a chance Thursday-Saturday right now.  Another thing you'll notice next week is the increased amount of humidity at times...especially later in the week.  If you have outdoor plans this week or for the Memorial Day weekend keep it tuned to our newscasts and WxPlus for the latest weather information and Kansas City's most accurate forecast.  Have a great weekend!

What an awesome day today, Jeremy!!!  We just filled up our pool and the kids were having a great time splashing around today.  Nevermind that their lips were blue as they were telling me they weren't cold.  LOL!  If only every day could be like today.

*****************

Hopefully the 80s do stick around this week...the area lakes need to warm-up for the holiday weekend coming up.  Will likely be a pretty cool dip in the lakes for Memorial Day!

DO YOU THINK WE COULD MAKE A RUN AT 90 ON WED?

Wednesday might have a north or northeast wind at the surface with a high to our north.  I wouldn't anticipate Wednesday being the warmest day as of now.

wow that was the longest walk I've ever been on with my cat in a long time. so someone blew the whistle on a tornado outbreak...well I heard strengthening Jet stream and got excited. but anywho I won't say anymore because I know it's a sensitive blog to some people. though in my personal opinion...people that scared of the weather shouldn't be reading a weather blog to begin with but my opinion doesn't matter does it.  Today was awesome i'm looking forward to another awesome day tomorrow. I LOVE WALKING MY CAT ON A LEASH ITS SO FUN!

Wow, today acted a lot like the western plains or even the southwest to some degree, we hit the mid 80's with a dew point near 40 degrees, at times a think the humidity dipped under 20%, it did feel good, although I kind of want a bit more moisture in the air since I get nosebleeds when the air is dry( that is the only thing I don't like about winter) I am waiting for the air to stay moist enough consistently so I can stop having to buy saline solution until the fall. Yep good weather, but waiting for the return of the rumblers;)

****************

Nick,

I think the moisture creeps up after Wednesday.  It might get bumped up some Monday and then fall back Tuesday.  Pretty soon the dew points will be high and we'll ask for a day like Saturday or today.

Well I need the warmest and hunmidest (if that is even a word!) day to be Wednesday. This is important! Byan.

Wednesday should be in the 80s, but maybe not that humid. A lot will depend on the position of a front. Likely a big temp difference somewhere close to our viewing area.  Humidity increases later in the week.

So far the GFS really digs that storm into the west and then has it sit and spin, putting us into an upperlevel ridge for a while. Although it does try and give us some warm front activity as early as Wed. evening.

I love this weather it's fantastic gives us a break before we get active again with thunderstorms. nice day enjoy it!!!!!!

I hope everyone enjoyed this weekend and even the upcoming couple of days.  It is looking like a front gets hung up across the region and the ULL sets in the southwest for a while.  This may result in a couple of cooler days with a chance of showers.  The showers were basically in the forecast...but now it looks cooler with the frontal position in question.

Jeremy, that is one heck of an omega block for next week.  Looking at the past patterns, this storm should be a "slide by", but this ridge doesn't seem to want to allow it.

It is really hard to trust the models right now...its really hard to believe this omega based on past cycle behaviors.  The GFS and European are both going with it.  It just seems too early in the season and inconsistent based on what we have seen.

Do you believe it?  Can it really block the way it shows?

Side note..its funny to look at the GFS.  it really wants to let the ULL slide by, but refuses...but at about 204 hrs, its like the model just gives in to itself and things clear out very quickly...

Its like the GFS just gives up.  LOL.  Much like I want to trying to figure out this deep ULL and omega.

What do you think?

****************

I'll blog later...and I updated the 7 day but once again it isn't transferring to the web.  The new 7 day is quite a bit different than the previous one.  Since the ULL sits out West and a front is close by we are expecting more clouds and a chance of showers Wed/Thurs.  As a result Wed/Thurs have been backed to around 70 for a high.  The blog yesterday hinted at the problems for the week ahead.  Gary tried to convince me to change earlier...but I held back until now.

I know Gary is going to show the LRC quite a bit this week in the blog and also will show some LRC graphics in the summer forecast Monday Night.

Oh no! It is going to be cold again? I know there was a chance, it was said some time ago, but I was hoping I could stay in the 80's, It improves my mood dramatically.

Wednesday/Thursday have some 'issues' right now with a front very close by.  It looks likely that there will be a huge temperature spread probably close to KC.  The forecast is a challenge this week...but we love challenges!
