Outflow boundary & Sean's chase pictures

Good morning bloggers,

Thunderstorms moved across northern Missouri this morning.  There is a weak bubble high (a high pressure area created by some rain cooled air, small scale) located over northern Missouri.  Rain cooled air has spread out from this bubble high and has shifted our winds to the northeast this morning with a band of clouds moving in from the east.  You can see the outflow boundary, below, indicated by the black dashed line.  And, the warm front is still south of us, which will be reenforced by this cooler surge.

This cool outflow is very evident this morning with the low cloud surge from the east and northeast. It is stablizing our lower layer, but making the warm front a bit stronger.  It could lead to some thunderstorm development near the warm front this afternoon.

Sean Wilson and his crew went out chasing yesterday.  Here are a couple of western Kansas pictures. We will try to get his video and other pictures later today.

The chance of rain/thunderstorms will be with us this weekend, but right now we just don't have the upper level support here, so until the warm moist air makes it up here, the thunderstorm chances will remain fairly low.

But, this is not the case over western Kansas where the wind fields at every level seem very favorable for severe thunderstorms again today.  Here is the severe weather outlook from the Storm Prediction Center:

I am taking the rest of the day off.  Brett, Jeremy, and Jeff will keep you updated with these developments. Brett's got a fishing forecast for you, here's the link. http://community.nbcactionnews.com/blogs/brett_anthonys_blog/default.aspx

If you want to meet Stormy, pick up a weather radio and have it programmed, or even meet me, then come by the Price Chopper in Parkville on Saturarday morning between 10 and 11 AM.

Sorry for the grim response yesterday, Notes...Gary set me up a bit...LOL

All said, I agree with Note's last point in the previous blog.  Gary, yes..you did a good job, and I would agree, it was a better forecast than what I put out there as it relates to the entire area and nailing it at KMCI.

You had the foresight to know that there would be a temp gradient seen through the metro, and it happened.

Anyway, you got it right, as I did..just you did it a bit better...so congrats.

Forgive me today as I have modelitis.  Looking at the GFS, it paints a woeful picture in my opinion.  Beyond this next frontal passage, it looks pretty bleak to me.   Looks like summer will be here before we know it.

Sigh - hot humid days with an occasional pulse storm.  Its for the birds...LOL.

I will have to keep watching, but I am getting the feeling that the summer forecast over emphasized the current LRC strength.  Looks kinda warm and dry long range purely based on the models in analyzing just a few runs long term.

Convecton is always a weakness in the models, and maybe that will save the "wetter" long range forecast.

Morning all and hi Trish's mom!
We got back about 0315 and I had to get up at 0700 so I am wiped out but very happy!
Yesterday was awesome as always. I am still the good luck charm being 3 for 3 with tornado chases.

I had never seen all the chasers like this on other trips. Alot of them ended up like us, at the IHop in Hayes last night eating dinner at 11pm.

We did not see the big cone tornado. Sean initailly set us up in WaKeene but we were chasing with another car and they wanted to go south so we missed that one. Sean always knows where to go and they all ended up exactly where he'd predicted. We did end up seeing some when we got back up by WaKeene.

The wall cloud above kept trying to form a tornado and going back up and finally we got tired of its games and started north only to finally have the stupid storm go tornado warned so we raced up closer to I-70 and intercepted it there. As they started closing off the road and other chasers piled out with cameras, Trish (Sean's wife) and I were in the car banging on the window thinking this thing was going to swallow us up. Sean and his friend, Greg, were oblivious to us, standing outside filming.
Finally I hung out the window and took pictures, since Trish and I figured it was going to drop a tornado right onto the car and kill us both LOL The wind yesterday was incredible too. Greg clocked some gusts at over 50mph. There were times we were fighting to get out of the car and the wind was pushing us back.

I cannot even begin to explain the eerieness of watching that wall cloud, which did produce a tornado we followed north, as it passed over us. It was quite dark and despite all the people on the road, it was quiet and it seemed like everything suddenly went slow motion, even tho the thing was really spinning. We were just staring up into it and it seemed so surreal.

All in all, another extremely incredible chase day with Sean.

Jeri

Hmmm... wondering if anyone else down south, especially around the La Cygne area experienced the very strong winds with driving rain around 5 am this morning? An oak tree in the back yard actually broke over mid trunk! Neighbors lost shingles off the roof and my roses look like they have been through a blender. Seemed like severe winds to me!!!

something to keep in mind when looking at the long range gfs is that climatology becomes a bigger factor the further out you go.  and nothing about this year has fit the climatological norm so far...so what concrete indications exist to suggest that it will change? nothing yet, as far as i am concerned.

farmgirl,

From some prelim radar looping back to about that time, it looks like you caught the northern extend of a strong cell more to the south.  It looks to have been a good sized cell, but rapidly collapsed in the frames after that timeframe.

You may have either caught the north part of a heavy thunderstorm or outflow of it collapsing...

Looking at some PWS data, it seems that nearby in Mound City it shows a T-Storm was nearby in that timeframe with that PWS showing gusts of about 40MPH.

All - here is an interesting link that gives some of the radar and SRV views of the Colorado tornadoes yesterday...

http://www.wunderground.com/blog/JeffMasters/show.html

Some had asked about a comparison sizewise to Greensburg...I think that is hard to answer as any tornado over half a mile wide is a monster.  I think Greensburg was nearly a mile wide, so by size..probably similar.

Windspeeds/rating will need to take evaluation to know for sure...likely EF-3+.

WOW.....what a day I had yesterday! I left Hays around 12:30 and shot down I-70 to Oakley,KS. From there I headed south to just north of Scott City and headed east to intercept a tornado warned storm just east of the town Dighton,KS. This storm produced a small tornado, and interestingly enough, I ran into the DOW(Doppler on Wheels, Josh Wurman's team/circus). Seriously, he has like 68 cars along with him it seems....LOL!

Anyway, this storm had the most AMAZING inflow I have ever experienced. They were howling in out of the ESE at around 40-50 mph. It was absolute incredible. I did not witness the cones yesterday either as I was too far south. However, this was easily my best chase day ever.

Stayed in Hays last night, and had our power knocked out as some pretty potent storms rumbled through between 5 and 6 this morning. Thunderstorms are now moving away and some clearing is starting to take place back to the west and southwest. If can clear out these clouds, the SPC is talking HIGH risk again, with Day 2 of the tornadofest out here.

Jeri...Great to hear you had a good time. Its such an adrenaline rush isnt it??

WOW.......what a couple of days we are having here!

Adam.

P.S. Taking a look at the RUC and current spc mesoanaylsis I think just south of I70 will once again be a better play with everything moving north with time. Current temps south of I70 are in the low-middle 70s with 2000-3000j/kg present already with clearing skies. If the RUC is correct bringing in a whopping 5000-6000j/kg and 70+F tds (GBD td 68F as of 9:45am) we could see some nasty cells south of I70.

I am certian this will go HIGH rish at 1630.....Im pumped.

Notes - two reasons.  First, as I admitted, I am suffering from modelitis right now.  I am sure I will snap out of it.

Second, as I have mentioned in the last week, I have less confidence in the cycle more toward summer as convective feedback is disruptive and the jet is quickly retreating.  Both leave problems for the cycle.

I can still see the cycle in a weaker form, but it is always sad for me this time of year to see the departure of the jet.

As far as the setup today..yeah, it is very nice out west.  The only thing that I hate about this event is that every yahoo with four wheels will be out chasing clouds making it a media and gawking circus.

It is these events that are such the double edged sword.  On one hand, it certainly gets the coverage and discussion it deserves in warning the public and bringing awareness to the potential situation, but on the other hand it is cheapened by the media that seems to grab anyone that can spell tornadoe [lol] to give their take on the events.  Also, it brings folks out of the woodwork that otherwise have no training or understanding of what it is to be a courteous chaser.

I can understand why law enforcement folks hate days like this beyond the obvious.

I think sometimes the best chase is to catch a rogue supercell in a slight risk day in the middle of nowhere...

While there are some dumb chasers out there that do those sorts of things, the majority understand the rules. It is usually the people who follow the chasers to see what is going on, or those without any experience that think they can get in a car and figure out how to stay safe, that cause the most problems and put experienced chasers and LEO's at risk. And then tehre are some LEO's that don't like chasers no matter what and look to make a problem out of it.

Jeremy - have you put much thought into tomorrow just to our WNW?

Here are some sounding parameters for TOP tomorrow at 0z

Precipitable water:        1.47 inches
Sfc-Lift cond lev (LCL): 935.29 mb
Cap Strength:              1.03 C
CAPE (B+):              4254.12 J/kg
Storm rel helicity (0-3000m)  213.4 m^2/s^2
700-500 lapse rate:        7.47 C/km
Bulk Shear:               73.41 m/s

Translated for everyone - lots of moisture, good low based for cloud development, weak cap, mega convective energy for storms to breed, decent turning of winds at the base, nice lift and decent windsheer to encourage tower growth.

Looking at the SREF, the composites go nuts for tomorrow again.  I would guess another dryline event from Salina/Manhattan to maybe as far as Topeka.

Whatcha think?

****************

We have a 20% chance of t-storms tomorrow.  I think most of the action is north central Kansas or in Nebraska.  NE Kansas doesn't seem quite as favorable.  But SPC has noted that area.  In our viewing area that is a spot to watch though.  As of now I'm not very excited for here on Saturday.

THE LATEST OBJECTIVE ANALYSIS SHOWS MODERATE TO STRONG INSTABILITY IN PLACE WITH MLCAPE VALUES IN THE 2000 TO 3000 J/KG RANGE. THIS COMBINED WITH SUBSTANTIAL DIRECTIONAL SHEAR IN THE LOWER TO MID-LEVELS SHOULD SUPPORT A THREAT FOR ISOLATED SEVERE STORMS. I watch this blog practically every day and find it very informative and entertaining :).  I usually don't comment much but today I just couldn't help but voice my frustration with the weather here in the Midwest.

I LOVE the spring and summer storms here!  Problem is, they never happen in our local area as often as I would like or expect.  My first summer here in 2005 was probably THE most active t-storm summer I have ever experienced.  However, since then ,it's been very inactive IMO.  And severe weather seems to occur once or twice a year and that's it (I guess that might be a good thing I guess).  My first Spring in 2006, we had that outbreak near here that hit Eastern Missouri.  Since then, nothing.

Point is, severe weather season is over for us.  Sure, they'll be "chances" between now and then, but no supercells to see.  I think all the elevated t-storms will be either West or North of here.  Are we in a 10-year cycle or something?  Will I have to wait until 2010 to see another giant supercell near here?  Is that usual?

Hopefully this doesn't mean we're in for a quiet t-storm summer too <sigh>. Last year was a complete bummer.  Oh well.

Kedison, in light of the severe storms in western KS yesterday and today, you might want to rethink what you are saying. I am not sure how you can be 100% positive severe season is over for us. Since you are including weather "in the midwest" it has hardly been inactive. There have been several instances of devestating storms near us. As much as I love to chase, I am glad the storms I saw yesterday and what is happening today is NOT right here.

Wow this storm is POWERFUL, there are T-storm warnings stretching about 180 miles north to south right now.  Crazy stuff going on out west.  Hopefully there are no fatalities or serious damage.

My brother lives in Wichita, I just called him and told him to start paying attention. He said there's bad weather? tonite? he had no idea what was going on to his west. But there are new storms coming up from OK moving further east and they just expanded the Tornado watch to include Wichita. Honestly, how can anyone not be obsessed with weather?!?! =}

JeriCorrell,

I probably should not have posted my comments on a night like this.  My thoughts and prayers are with the folks under tornado threats tonight.  And yes, I'm glad my family and I seem to live in a much safer area.  However, since I can't chase or even go anywhere remotely near to where the t-storms have been active this year, I merely go by what happens in my backyard.  It seems to me, the last few years, areas that get hit by severe weather git hit over and over again (i.e. like tonight).  A week or so ago, it was South of us.  Do I wish for one of those situations to occur in my neighborhood? Noway!
