Severe Weather Outbreak Ongoing!

A dangerous severe weather outbreak continues in parts of the Plains.  A large tornado that was reported on the ground just 3 miles from Greensburg, KS appears to have missed the town.  Great news in an otherwise scary evening that has already produced 32 tornadoes reports as of this writing.

Here is a look at LIVE:ESP this evening using the LEVEL II NEXRAD radar information from Wichita, KS.  Nice the hook on the radar image northeast of Greensburg, KS.  This signature is a good indication of a tornado.

The other two cells near the Kansas and Okalahoma borders have also produced severe weather and at least one possible tornado.

These showers and thunderstorms will continue to move off to the northeast overnight.  Whatever is left of these storms may reach parts of the viewing area and produce a weakening area of showers and maybe a thunderstorm.  Best chance of seeing a shower in the morning will occur west of the state line.  The rain chance for Saturday stands at about 30%.

We'll track the weekend forecast in depth tonight at 10pm and also on NBC Action News Today on Saturday starting at 8am.

Dr. Forbes on TWC is very concerned about our area for tomorrow...yet none of the local guys seem too keen on the threat.
Jeremy, what do you think?

wow I cant believe the weather that was in KS today. I am not sure I have seen such a solid line of thunderstorms ever.  praying for a safer night for everyone in KS.

The upper level support, warm front, and moisture will likely keep this tornado threat going for several more hours!

AT THE SFC...A LOW IS FORECAST TO MOVE NWD ACROSS ERN MT WITH BACKED
SELY WINDS IN PLACE ACROSS ERN SD...ERN NEB AND NE KS. SFC DEWPOINTS
SHOULD INCREASE DURING THE DAY WITH LOWER TO MID 60S F REACHING ERN
SD BY EARLY EVENING. FURTHER SOUTH...DEWPOINTS MAY APPROACH 70 F IN
SE NEB OR NE KS. THIS SHOULD RESULT IN AN AXIS OF MODERATE TO STRONG
INSTABILITY ORIENTED FROM ERN KS NNWWD ACROSS ERN NEB INTO CNTRL SD.
IN ADDITION...21Z FORECAST SOUNDINGS ON SATURDAY ACROSS MUCH OF THE
SLIGHT RISK AREA SHOW 0-6 KM SHEAR VALUES IN THE 55 TO 75 KT RANGE
SUGGESTING SHEAR WILL BE FAVORABLE FOR SUPERCELLS. AS THE LOW-LEVEL
JET STRENGTHENS DURING THE LATE AFTERNOON AND EARLY
EVENING...BOUNDARY LAYER SHEAR SHOULD BE FAVORABLE FOR TORNADOES
WITH THE MORE DOMINANT STORMS. HODOGRAPHS ACROSS THE CNTRL TO WRN
PART OF THE SLIGHT RISK AREA SATURDAY AFTERNOON ARE LOOPED WITH 0-1
KM HELICITIES IN THE 250 TO 300 M2/S2 RANGE SUGGESTING LOW-LEVEL
SHEAR WILL BE SUFFICIENT FOR STRONG TORNADOES. AN ISOLATED THREAT
FOR STRONG TORNADOES WILL BE POSSIBLE FROM ERN SD SWD ACROSS ERN NEB
INTO NE KS DURING THE LATE AFTERNOON AND EARLY EVENING. A THREAT FOR
VERY LARGE HAIL AND DAMAGING OUTFLOW GUSTS WILL ALSO EXIST WITH THE
MORE INTENSE UPDRAFTS ESPECIALLY ACROSS SE NEB AND NE KS WHERE
MLCAPE VALUES MAY REACH THE 3500 TO 4500 J/KG RANGE. PARTS OF THE
AREA MAY NEED TO BE UPGRADED TO MODERATE RISK ONCE THE AMOUNT OF
CONVECTION ALONG THE INSTABILITY AXIS BECOMES MORE CERTAIN.

Hmmm. Jeremy, what do you think?

Wondering how tonight's activity will affect tomorrow's setup.  For the people in Kansas who have had two solid days, I'm sure they'd like to see the atmosphere stabilize a little.  On the other hand, I'm planning to chase tomorrow so I'm hoping for some outflow boundaries.

I just drove back to KC North from Lawrence, on 435 N on the KS side, I was getting blown all over the road and with all the construction cones up it was almost like an obstacle course!

Everytime I have looked at NWS outlook tonight it has changed and I'm getting confused.  First we were in slight risk, then they took us out, and now we're back in.  Is this really going to just be showers by the time it gets here or are we in for severe weather?  And I'm NOT questioning your forecast Jeremy, I just get nervous. :)
