Watch NBC Action News HD for the most accurate holiday weekend forecast at 8am, 5, & 10pm today!
Good Morning! A large area of showers and thunderstorms swept thru the region early this morning. No severe weather watches or warnings were ever issued for the metro, but the storms did produce heavy rain and quite a bit of lightning. Please send along your rain totals and I will use them on our newscasts today and also on NBC Action Weather Plus.
Here are some of the rain totals from the automated weather stations around the area. I'll try to update these...
- Downtown KC 1.17"
- KCI Airport 0.90"
- Lawrence, KS 1.24"
- Chillicothe, MO 1.91"
- St. Joseph, MO 0.42"
Expect lots of clouds across the area this morning with temperatures warming into the 60s. Additional thunderstorms are trying to develop along the edge of more humid air. We'll have to see how these trend thru the morning. Some sunshine will return to the region this afternoon with highs in the upper 70s. The warmest temperatures will occur south of I-70 in Kansas. Some locations around Emporia should make the mid 80s today. Here are forecast highs from the RUC.

The humidity will also be on the increase the next couple of days. So expect warmer temperatures this weekend and also more humid weather conditions.
With a lot of clouds and rain cooled air in place it will be difficult for thunderstorms to redevelop around Kansas City this afternoon. But there will be a warm front lifting northeast this afternoon. That could spark a shower or thunderstorm, so if you have outdoor plans later today just stay up to date with the latest forecast on NBC Action News, NBC Action WxPlus, and the weather blog. The chances of staying dry will be much greater than getting wet for this afternoon. Rain chance is 20-30%.
A slight risk for severe weather does exist for parts of the viewing area...with the greatest threat in Kansas. Here is a part of the SPC discussion that focuses on Kansas.
...KS...
OVER KS...EVOLUTION OF RESIDUAL OUTFLOW BOUNDARY WILL LIKELY PLAY AN IMPORTANT ROLE TO CONVECTIVE INITIATION THIS AFTERNOON. MESOSCALE ORGANIZATION OF OVERNIGHT MCS SUGGESTS THAT BOUNDARY MAY BE SLOW TO DISSIPATE...PROVIDING A FOCUSED AREA OF CONVERGENCE AND ASCENT OVER PARTS OF KS THIS AFTERNOON. IF A STORM CAN FORM IN THIS REGION...HIGH CAPE VALUES OF 3000+ J/KG AND FAVORABLE DEEP LAYER
VERTICAL SHEAR WOULD PROMOTE SUPERCELL CHARACTERISTICS. ENHANCED LOW LEVEL SHEAR NEAR OLD BOUNDARY MIGHT ALSO RESULT IN TORNADO THREAT.

As of now the highest rain chance for the remainder of the weekend arrives on Memorial Day. We'll look in depth at that rain chance and severe weather chances as the new data rolls in.
I'll pass along some of your rain totals today!
