T-Storms Exit...Some Dry Time Ahead?

Watch NBC Action News HD for the most accurate holiday weekend forecast at 8am, 5, & 10pm today!

Good Morning!  A large area of showers and thunderstorms swept thru the region early this morning.  No severe weather watches or warnings were ever issued for the metro, but the storms did produce heavy rain and quite a bit of lightning.  Please send along your rain totals and I will use them on our newscasts today and also on NBC Action Weather Plus.

Here are some of the rain totals from the automated weather stations around the area.  I'll try to update these...

  • Downtown KC  1.17"
  • KCI Airport  0.90"
  • Lawrence, KS  1.24"
  • Chillicothe, MO  1.91"
  • St. Joseph, MO  0.42"

Expect lots of clouds across the area this morning with temperatures warming into the 60s. Additional thunderstorms are trying to develop along the edge of more humid air. We'll have to see how these trend thru the morning.  Some sunshine will return to the region this afternoon with highs in the upper 70s.  The warmest temperatures will occur south of I-70 in Kansas.  Some locations around Emporia should make the mid 80s today.  Here are forecast highs from the RUC.

The humidity will also be on the increase the next couple of days.  So expect warmer temperatures this weekend and also more humid weather conditions.

With a lot of clouds and rain cooled air in place it will be difficult for thunderstorms to redevelop around Kansas City this afternoon.  But there will be a warm front lifting northeast this afternoon.  That could spark a shower or thunderstorm, so if you have outdoor plans later today just stay up to date with the latest forecast on NBC Action News, NBC Action WxPlus, and the weather blog.  The chances of staying dry will be much greater than getting wet for this afternoon.  Rain chance is 20-30%.

A slight risk for severe weather does exist for parts of the viewing area...with the greatest threat in Kansas.  Here is a part of the SPC discussion that focuses on Kansas.

...KS...
OVER KS...EVOLUTION OF RESIDUAL OUTFLOW BOUNDARY WILL LIKELY PLAY AN IMPORTANT ROLE TO CONVECTIVE INITIATION THIS AFTERNOON.  MESOSCALE ORGANIZATION OF OVERNIGHT MCS SUGGESTS THAT BOUNDARY MAY BE SLOW TO DISSIPATE...PROVIDING A FOCUSED AREA OF CONVERGENCE AND ASCENT OVER PARTS OF KS THIS AFTERNOON.  IF A STORM CAN FORM IN THIS REGION...HIGH CAPE VALUES OF 3000+ J/KG AND FAVORABLE DEEP LAYER
VERTICAL SHEAR WOULD PROMOTE SUPERCELL CHARACTERISTICS.  ENHANCED LOW LEVEL SHEAR NEAR OLD BOUNDARY MIGHT ALSO RESULT IN TORNADO THREAT.

As of now the highest rain chance for the remainder of the weekend arrives on Memorial Day.  We'll look in depth at that rain chance and severe weather chances as the new data rolls in.

I'll pass along some of your rain totals today!

Good morning to you!! Hope your day goes well!! Just checking in this morning-haven't even been able to that much lately!! We recieved close to an 1 1/2 inches here in SW Lawrence last night-combined with Wednesday night's rain we have recieved close to 3 inches this week-I'll take it!!!!

We currently have a pretty stiff East wind-looks like on satelite that the clearing line is back towards Salina-looks to be a pretty coolish breezy morning-much like yesterday and Thursday and then by around 2:00 the skies begin to clear and we really warm up.

Has the warm front been pushed back into Oklahoma this morning-that looks to be where the highest dew points are at the present moment. I think it will be interesting to see how long this MCS holds together as it moves NE and if it helps keep the east winds going here for a bit longer than yesterday-am I even making any sense?? LOL

One other crazy note: Looks like the GFS has been very concistent showing the front finally jumping North of us later today and tomorrow and then it begins to slowly sag south on Monday. The GFS has been consistent the past few runs showing us with a descent amount of rain Monday afternoon into Tuesday morning and then finally it all clears out by Tuesday afternoon. In the end, this looks to be a very tricky next 72 hours as there are so many things that can have a small affect which in turn changes the whole weather for the day!! Does that make any sense?? I am very rusty right now on my blogging!!! LOL

Have a great day and thanks for reading and have a great Holiday weekend!!!

I was without internet and tv yesterday so I had no idea that we were getting storms this morning. I woke up quite surprised with all of the loud thunder. didnt get much sleep after that. Last night was the night I needed to get the most, Lots of work to get done today. Glad to have the rain though. It is wonderful to have not set up a single sprinkler yet this year. I hope it continues for a bit longer and the hot temperatures stay away.

Mark,

You say no warnings were issued but my Weather Radio sure went off at 4:44AM, Warning for Leavenworth County, Severe Thunderstorm, and it was a doozy, high winds, pea size hail and my brand new, dry to the bone rain gauge shows 1.5" of rain, Lost electric until about 8:30am, lots of small limbs and leaves covering the yard,
I pulled up the weather on my blackberry since I had no electric, and saw that bow echo really forming over  Shawnee, Olathe area. Freaked me out, I swore when I went to bed last night, there was only a 30% of rain

***********************

I mentioned the no watches or warnings was for the metro(Platte, Clay, Jackson, Wyandotte, & Johnson counties).  There were some areas of strong winds...but overall the rain and lightning was the main issue with this line of storms.  There was a 30% chance of storms.  And as I mentioned last night at 10pm we would get the leftovers from the central Kansas storms.  The overall coverage and rainfall amount were greater than expected, but not certainly not that there were storms.

Thanks for the rain total...I'll pass that along.  Great to hear you have a weather radio...we need everyone to have one for these type of nighttime events.

Andrew, I totally understand how excited you are after going on a chase. But it is really dangerous for people to try to do this on their own without equipment, especially those who are very very new. I can't imagine going out now just driving around in a car looking, without a doppler indicating rotation and shear and direction. It is too easy to get trapped in a bad situation.

Sean has been doing this for years and is very experienced in driving in these situations. His SUV is also equipped with special tires for these conditions. Honestly, it is the average guy following the chasers or people playing lookie-loo that cause alot of danger to others or get caught in a bad spot. You really can't always tell which way something is going to go.

Jeremy,
This is what the weather team posted last night:
Best chance of seeing a shower in the morning will occur west of the state line.  The rain chance for Saturday stands at about 30%.

Now that we can see that the rain was area-wide and developed into a major system of rain stretching from Iowa to Oklahoma, what was it that you missed in predicting this for the system? Did something change?--the High moving out of the way over Iowa etc.

Just trying to figure out the huge difference between your forecast and what actually transpired 12 hours later.  It seems the entire state of Missouri will have received a lot of rain today. That is quite a big difference from "Best chance of seeing a shower in the morning will occur west of the state line."
*************** But you failed to include my statement during the 10pm news last night...closer to the event. At 10pm I clearly stated that what was left of the thunderstorms in Kansas would move into the area overnight. I even gave a time frame of after 3 or 4am during the weather segment. I didn't think the rain area would be as widespread as it turned out to be. The thunderstorm complex was strongest west of the state line and weakened as it pushed east. Overall the forecast could have been better, but the chance of rain was in the forecast for this morning last night and for Saturday many days in advance. Jeremy

Jeremy: Every local weathecaster blew the overnight forecast. "Mr Downplay" even said "barely a sprinkle and no rain today". Its OK to admit that last night caught you by surprise. At midnight, it looked like the MCS would move across southern KS because the northern extent of the line had weakened considerably.

You are, by definition, attempting to predict the future when you make a forecast. We can't rationally expect you to be right 100% of the time. ************* I hear what you are saying, but to say the forecast was a bust isn't right either. I said the part that surprised me was the coverage of the rain and how much fell. Not the fact that there were showers or thunderstorms. Jeremy,
In defending yourself, you failed to answer my question. I'm just here to learn. What happend that made this a huge rain event when yesterday afternoon, you did not think that likely.
Again, what conditions changed that allowed it to happen?

---------------------

Nothing really changed.  Yesterday's severe thunderstorms across western Kansas created boundaries.  The warm front has been south of us for days, and north of the warm front is a very favorable spot for thunderstorms.  When yesterday's lines and supercells evolved after midnight, and MCS formed with a strong line on the leading edge of the MCS.

This is not a big surprise, even though, we weren't exactly sure how the activity would evolve overnight.  The warm front is still south of us today, but it is about to jump north.  And, then a cold front will be sagging our way from the northwest Sunday and Monday creating a new way to produce thunderstorms.

How is percent chances of rain calculated? I've had 100% chance of rain since Thursday with strong storms, driving torential rain and strong winds every morning around 4-5 am. Really am tired of cleaning stalls. I'm looking forward to a dry spell. Need a good long stretch to so we can start haying.

Sorry I have not been around...  I love weather discussions but real life has taken over.  I don't even know how much rain we had last night because I never checked the rain gauge..  I do know that my weather radio went off twice so I ended up pulling the plug on it because I was sooo tired and needed to sleep.  I didn't even hear it when I rolled thru.

If you would like to keep in touch with me, please email me at simplykristi@simplykristi.com.  I do check my email every day.

Welcome ProPilot!  I'm not the blog welcoming committee, but just since I have a question for you as a pilot just wanted to give you a warm welcome!  I've been sucked into the live feed from KWTV in Oklahoma and I cannot imagine how hard it is for that pilot to be tracking these tornadoes.  Seems like a fairly smooth ride, so they must have a great camera.  How hard would it be for this pilot to gauge the storms and the outflow winds to be able to successfully  track and video these storms?

...missed ya Kristi.  Your family and you are still in my prayers!
