Tornado Watch

A tornado watch has been issued for our viewing area until 4 a.m. Monday.  Here is the county breakdown.

The thunderstorms that may produce severe weather will arrive in Kansas City probably after 11 p.m.  There is also a Flash Flood Watch in effect tonight and Monday as some locations will see 2-4"+ of rain!

Please see the previous 2 blogs for more information on our weather tonight and on the tornadoes that have occurred today in the Midwest.  The town of Parkerburg, IA from early pictures that I have seen...has damage that looks a lot like Greensburg, KS.  There have been 2 fatalities reported in that town as of this writing.  Let's hope there is no more severe weather this holiday weekend!

Here in SW Topeka we had a gust front move through in the last 30 minutes or so and it has dropped the temperature to 70.7 degrees at my house. I think it was still above 80 right beforehand.  You can see the gust front on this Topeka radar image:

The storms have not made it here yet. It looks to me like we are only going to get mainly heavy rain tonight with not much, if anything, severe.  Mike

Jeremy, can you comment on the NWS statement that the winds associated with this storm complex has the potential for hurricane force winds? Is this with a squall line or wide spread severe weather tonight? I'm terrified of high winds.... causes much damage to home, barns, livestock etc.

Jonathon actually the 2nd lowest risk tornado watch. #358 was a %30 percent risk of 2 or more tornadoes. It was kindof pointless issuing a tornado watch if there was such a low probability. This tornado watch for us looks to be somewhat pointless-maybe a severe storm watch would be better. Just some thoughts.

HailJonathan said:

Suej..it's okay to be nervous but there's only one T-Storm warning on one of the storms that has a chance of holding together when it gets here and I think the tornado threat is low.

Outgoing, it's not a matter of these people trashing everybody's opinion.  There are a few people in here who try to predict the gloom and doom and scare the people who are legitimately concerned.  Those are the people who are getting bashed. If we had an ice storm every time one blogger posted we would, Kansas City would have set a record for ice storms this year.
If you look at Scott's comments towards Gary, they're well thought out and not in a bashing manner.  That's the way we should all agree/disagree.  However, we have people on here who also say while there is a tornado watch, we can ignore it.  That's just ludicrous.  The people who issue the watches have years of experience, more than any of the bloggers here.  They also have data, in addition to the radar, to make their predictions. They may be wrong some times, but I'd rather err on the side of caution.
When my parents were kids, my hometown and the whole northeast was told that a hurricane was going out to sea once it reached Virginia.  It didn't.  The result was somewhere between 600 and 1,200 deaths.  Two-hundred people were swept from the beach near our house and into the sea.  The estimated death toll from our town was around 300.  They were told there was not going to be a storm.
While we most likely won't get a tornado, people should be aware that conditions are right.  We live a couple of miles from where those homes were hit on May 2 in the Kansas City North area.  We're still waiting to have our roof replaced as our many of the people in our neighborhood.

yeah...40 percent for 2 or more tornadoes is low

I think to keep the peace on here we need to not comment on others comments. If you don't like what someone has said than just ignore them. They have a right to comment just as much as the next guy even if it is false as long as it is not bashing anyone.  The most important thing is to not put someone else down.  Even implying someone is not good because lets face it they still know who you mean.  If they are full of BS people will find out soon enough on there own and if they are right more power to them. If there is someone on here trying to get under peoples skins if you just ignore them they will go away if they don't get the rise they are looking for. It takes two to fight so putting the blame on one person when these things get out of hand is not right. I am new to posting on here, been lurking for awhile and these blogs are an excellent source for weather info and I would hate for it to be shut down especially tonight.  So please people leave other commenter's alone.

Folks, a "storm" is moving into western Shawnee county now - about 10 miles west of me - and I'm not even seeing any lightning. The temp at my house is now 69.3F.

Radar returns do not look severe to me to the west - looks like mainly an area of moderate to heavy rain.

Looks like the same cooling gust front is about to move through Kansas City...I think this is hurting the warm air inflow ahead of the storms.

I don't believe there is any real tornado threat in the area tonight.  Now tomorrow could be different.  ;)

The severe weather will be to our south.  The tornado watch has been replaced by a Severe T-storm Watch to our south.  Just be on the look out for some heavy rain.

Sorry but I knew it would amount to very li8ttle.  You all should listen to me more often. :)

At least for the metro it hasn't amounted to much.  Let's see if the line forms into a bow to the southeast.

Just to make sure, is the severe weather threat over for the Clay County area? I know the watch has been canceled but I just wanted to check before I go to bed.

Thanks

The watches are cancelled for Clay...looks like the severe threat for you is now very small tonight.  You can rest a little better.

Weird weather here...I just looked outside a bit ago and the rain was swirling outside.  Wind kept changing the direction of the rain...Raining heftily, light show, and thunder here near the triangle.

I have a time lapse going on our tower cam by the Triangle.  Wonder how it will turn out...

You can expect a strong storm in the next 15 minutes or so.  Gusty winds, heavy rain, and maybe some hail.

Oh I'm so happy that there's no more tornado watch.  Hopefully nothing else will be too bad.  I'm so glad I found this forum and you smart people to chat with about weather, if not I probably would have rushed off to my in-laws at the first mention of a tornado watch and now I would be sitting there regretting it like no tomorrow.

Why was a tornado watch put up until 4am and then cancelled?  What changed?  Could we go back under a tornado watch tonight?

*******************

I don't see us going back under a tornado watch tonight.  The t-storm watch replaced the watch that was in effect until 4 a.m. for some areas.
