New Watch Issued...Replaces Tornado Watch...Iowa Tornado Video

I hope everyone is having a safe and happy holiday weekend.  Thank you for stopping by the blog this weekend.  Our blog hits have been off the charts once again!  Just wanted to update everyone.  The tornado watch that was in effect until 4 a.m. has been replaced by a severe thunderstorm watch that is in effect until 7 a.m.  The new watch DOES NOT include the metro area.

The storms will be noisey in Kansas City and many other locations, but it looks like we may have escape with gusty winds, small hail, and heavy rain.  The thunderstorms are forming into a more linear structure and could begin to take the shape of a bow echo soon.  If this does occur areas that will need to stay alert for damaging winds would be the southeast and eastern locations within the viewing area.  Some of these cities would include Clinton, Warrensburg, Butler, and Sedalia.

Please send in your rain totals early on Monday and Brett will use them on NBC Action News Today!

Finally...this video of the damage in Parkerburg, IA is tough to watch...it is really sad.  Hopefully this drives home the point that severe weather is nothing to ever hope for.

Sounds good. The claims adjuster is dragging his feet in getting out here from the May 2 storms in the Northland.  Our roof still has a tarp.  I know they're busy, but when we got hit by a hurricane in 1985, our roof was repaired within two weeks.  With tons of more widespread damage, the adjusters really got out and did their jobs quickly.  It doesn't seem to be the case from what I see around here.

I just heard some rumbles up here in Shoal Creek.

Hmm...seems like you need to give our 'Call For Action' reporter a call!

Why does it seem like every time they issue a flash flood watch we never get that much rain? With the exception of the far south and southeast corners of the metro area, I don't think we've seen that much in town. I have yet to see a drop up here by MO-152 & N. Oak. Just started thundering, though looking at radar trends, I don't really see much more than a half inch of rain falling in the light rain moving in.

The watch goes thru Monday.  The main front is still to our north.

Couldn't help but notice there's a tornado warning in the area no longer under a watch.  Think maybe they should keep the watch?

Gust front just passed through Harrisonville. Nice lightning show and rain starting to come down. Tornado warning down south is radar indicated but doesn't really have strong rotation characteristics. Maybe the NWS is just being cautious after what happened here in KC. This linei s much weaker than the bow echo that caused all our problems. Relax and enjoy the show.

I don't know why, but the storms seem to go right around my neighborhood. All I can do is sit and watch. Are the storms supposed to redevelop to the west and move in again between now and when the front gets here?

It seems very very stupid to cancel a tornado watch for a system that is still producing tornadoes.  It sends the wrong message.  No one will get mad if they wait until this stuff blows through to cancel the watch.

chieffan07,
This should be it...  We will have some general thunderstorms with some moderate to heavy rain but no severe weather overnight.  The severe weather should be 90 miles to the south of KC.  I would keep an eye out for flooding rains as that is the main threat, in my opinion.

I really hope the sun comes out by late morning tomorrow...my lawn is looking like a jungle!  It will be interesting to see how quickly we can recover and fire more storms on Monday...wait...that would be today:)

Hi Jeremy,
My youngest brother mowed the yard yesterday (Sunday).  Hopefully, he won't have to mow it for a few days!  It was getting tall when he mowed it!

You think that we will have any heavy rain?

Kristi

We are in a pretty steady rain right now...there could be heavy rain on Monday.

It looks like a long night of moderate rain... a real soaker.     If we get heavy rain today or tonight it might  be a real problem.   I notice the NWS still has 1-2" for tonight.   I assume somebody around the area will get that and more.

Glad to see you back kristi :)

Still think someone has a shot at 2-4"+ from what occurred Sunday thru Tuesday.

Hi Jeremy,
That has been my thinking all along....  Heavy rain is more of a factor than severe weather, in my opinion.

It is terrible what has happened in Iowa and Minnesota.  My mom has a cousin who lives just north of the MN metro area.  She lives in Almelund, MN.  She lives out on a farm there.

Kristi.... trying to be the voice of reason :)

*******************

Some of my family lives in the western suburbs of MSP...so they are ok.  This has been a very deadly year for tornadoes.

Yes, Jeremy, a very bad year for tornadoes.

I have some relatives visiting us from near Mountain View AR.  They showed us pictures of the damage from the Feb. 5th tornado.  They also showed us pictures from the flooding back in March.  They told me that the pictures do not do it justice.  It's unreal.

I'm heading out with Windy for a walk, hopefully we can get it in before any more rain.  Heavy rain here in Paola overnight but appears to have stopped for a bit.  I didn't hear much thunder/lightning but lots of rain.  We didn't need any rain, the ground never gets a chance to dry out.  Glad my husband got the mowing in yesterday, seems we do that every 3 days around here.  So sad for the folks up north, they have a bleak day ahead sorting through the rubble. ***** Have a great walk, it is not going to stay dry for long.  Brett

I am shocked up here in McLouth.  I think the most excitement last night was the gust front.  After though the storms went poof and redeveloped to the SW and East.  I was in shock as the dew points, temps were so high yesterday, I just thought surely there was going to be massive rainfall totals.  My raingauge checks in with .47.  I got stuck in the MCS portion of the storm directly after the gust front.  Or what I mean by that... the weaker area of showers that are associated with the main line.  The main line never developed into this area... it was crazy, we just went into the solid area of rain.  But it wasn't anything heavy here.  My intuition was telling me last night was going to be a historical event.  Boy I guess I was wrong.  Well Im glad nothing got damaged.  Looks like maybe later today some excitement?   Have a good day team.  Im sure you need some rest.   **** Thanks for the update from McLouth. I, for one, was glad to get typical thunderstorms and nothing severe.  Brett
