Afternoon update to this rainy day

Good afternoon NBC Action Weather Bloggers,

Today has become a mess for forecasting the weather.  The rain has continued along and south of I-70 with thunderstorms redeveloping all morning west of Topeka.  This developing area has just shown strong signs of falling apart.  It may suddenly shut off and the rain and clouds would then break up.  This is a major factor for redevelopment this evening.  Where will the front be located this evening, and will the sky clear to allow the atmosphere to destablize?

This is a very unusual set up with the main energy in the upper levels of the atmosphere located well north of the surface boundaries.  Below, you can see the surface forecast for Tuesday morning, and then on the second map the upper level flow.

A surface cyclone is forming now over western Kansas and will weaken and sag southward on Tuesday.  Thunderstorms will once again be generated in the warmer air out west. An MCS will form and start moving our way.  Will it move in tonight, or track south of our region?  This is what we will try to figure out tonight.

An upper ridge over Canada has helped split the jet stream.  The northern stream is going to drop south over the Great Lakes. This will help a cool air mass build into the plains tonight through Wednesday.  So, it will be back to the cool weather Tuesday or Wednesday.  Well, it is sort of a cooler day today as well.

I was at Price Chopper in Parkville Saturday.  Below, you can see Wyatt Houston, 8 years old.  He loves the weather and he came by to get a weather radio and say hello to Stormy.

Have a great Memorial Day.  We will update the blog tonight as the severe weather potential can be better assessed.  Watch NBC Action News tonight at 5, 6, and 10 PM for the latest details.

OK, I'm not sure what the chances of severe are in western KS Wed and Thurs. The SPC mentions a possibility in the day 4 outlook. My folks are driving out from Phx Tuesday and going thru Tucumcari to the Panhandles and then to Hwy 54 from Liberal across.

Hey all ~
Sorry, long time no post. I've been in FL this past week. It was HOT and really humid. Won't complain about our humidity again.

Anyways, I have a storm that's about to head into my area (Joplin) and it's dark red bow. I would think that my weather radio would be going off for something or the TV but .... nothing. What do you think? Should I be concerned?

Thanks,
Lorie

Hello all!!! Lorie, that does look like a nasty storm headed your way, but no warnings out of it as of now. Its trying to clear up here in drexel, its having a pretty hard time. If we do get a few hours of sun though, we could see some potent storms later.

Thanks LRC! I'll be ok with the heavy rain. It's been raining light to moderate all day. It's been a good day for sleeping in and taking a nap. I've done both. ;-)  Glad that I don't have to worry about a tornado....yet.

Stormdog - I feel for all those affected by the twisters, especially that homeless guy in Wyoming, an ex-vet, who lost his kids (cat-kid, dog-kid) - hurts really bad.  That is a main reason I stopped chasing about 1999. Didn't need any more depression that I already am subject to.  However, for those chasing, it is a rush, and is fascinating.  As you all know, I like a nice haul in the rain gauge, and some thunder and lightning, which I have gotten this weekend (.67" this morning).

Today, who knows - lots of boundaries around, as the overcast thins and the atm heats up - already our dp is up to at least 65F - more than enough to sustain severe weather.  Max heating isn't until 1700-1800, so plenty of time for destabilization - beside the dryline and front, watch out for those outflow boundaries - remember, the massive storms in Oklahoma formed along a dryline where it intersected a dryline!

Take care, and keep you heads down.  If you get stuck and can't get away, GET OUT OF YOUR VEHICLES AND INTO A DITCH, OR AT WORST, FLAT ON THE GROUND, AWAY FROM YOUR CAR.  You may die anyway, but your odds in the car are near to zero to survive.

I think NOAA took us out of slight too soon.  It is almost 80 here in Tonganoxie very muggy.  I am weather knowledge challenged why would we not be in any kind of severe threat as muggy as it is?

I don't understand why we would be taken out of the slight risk area.  It's clearing nicely and warming up quite a bit...I thought that's what we needed to happen for a chance of some hefty storms!!  Just when I think I'm starting to understand this weather thing...stuff like this happens!!  :)

LVStormSpotter said:

I agree, I am a meteorology major and I  still think that we shoulda stayed in the slight risk.

The atmosphere is destabilizing and the front and lots of boundaries are out there.
Storms could still develop as we head towards 5 or 6.
May 26, 2008 3:17 PM

Roberto said:

It made sense that the SPC took us out of the risk because after the rain this morning, the atmosphere became very stabilized. There is not enough instability right now in the atmosphere to promote thunderstorm (severe) development. If the sun comes out for long periods of time, we may be put back in a slight risk later on. We also do not have much wind shear in the atmosphere, further preventing explosive thunderstorm development. As for Friday into Saturday, we are in the 4-8 day outlook for Friday, but we are on the southern side. Things can change, but the biggest event will most likely be to our northeast. Furthermore, the low pressure center is very far away from us, located near the TX/OK panhandle. If this low were to move near us, along with fair instability, our severe risk would appear higher. At least that's what I think... :-)

GaryB said:

The cold front maby be pushing in faster than expected, but the sunshine and the heat of the day may change things.  Still think whatever happens will be south of I-70.  Having said that, the timing of the ingredients are relatively slow as we've gone through the weekend.  This is a slow moving storm dealing with a stubborn front that tends to deliver isolated storms wherever it wants.  I think our rain chances N of I-70 are limited and those S have a 90 percent with higher percentage amounts further south. If this was a snow storm, Topeka and Manhatton would have about a foot, where we have a dusting.
May 26, 2008 3:26 PM

LVStormSpotter said:

I agree with the atmosphere being stable due to this mornings activity, but with this sunshine and the temp being 80 right now in Leavenworth, anything can happen.
May 26, 2008 3:26 PM

Roberto said:

Maybe I spoke too soon, as recent satellite images show an expending sun-free area near KC and points NW! And there is a stationary front to our south, but that low is pretty far away, but that doesn't matter as long as it warms up. So, I guess maybe it was to early to take us out of the slight risk area!
May 26, 2008 3:27 PM

Craig said:

To those of you wondering where the front lays, this is from the Topeka NWS a/o 3:00 pm.

PERSISTENT CONVECTION FINALLY MOVING EASTWARD. MAIN STATIONARY
BOUNDARY STILL A BIT DIFFICULT TO IDENTIFY...ALTHOUGH LATEST
ANALYSIS WOULD PLACE IT JUST ALONG NE-KS BORDER. EXPECT THIS TO
CONTINUE SLOW PROGRESSION SOUTH AND END UP SOUTH OF THIS FORECAST
AREA OVERNIGHT. A COMPLICATING FACTOR IS MESS LEFT OVER FROM RECENT
CONVECTION. THERE APPEARS TO BE AN OUTFLOW BOUNDARY FURTHER
SOUTH...ALONG THE OK BORDER...THAT COULD CERTAIN FOCUS HEAVY RAIN
OVERNIGHT AS LLJ ACCELERATES AFTER SUNSET. UNCERTAINTY CENTERS ON
WHICH BOUNDARY...CONVECTIVE LEFTOVER IN OK OR STATIONARY FURTHER
NORTH...BECOMES THE FOCUS

its been sunny with temps in the 80's at the fort for most of the day.  the dewpoint is 70.6 degrees right now.  if the boundry layer near the NE/KS border becomes the focal point, things could pop rather nicely.
