Severe thunderstorms over western Kansas

Good evening bloggers,

I just finished the 6 PM newscast showing some fascinating tornado footage from last Friday near Quinter, KS.  Tuesday night we are planning on showing the Oklahoma tornado from a different perspective.

Tonight, Mother Nature is at it again.  Tornado warnings are in effect for counties northwest of Wichita, KS.  These thunderstorms are going to organize into a complex of thunderstorms and we will tracking this tonight at 10 PM.  It appears to be taking aim on our viewing area for later tonight, but flooding seems to be the main threat, with a lot of lightning.

We will try to update the blog later this evening as this complex organizes.

Gary

We finally just got my garden planted this weekend, so I hope the rain doesn't wash it all away.  And I do not like the idea of lightening...I'm alway afraid of it hitting my house.

When are you thinking it may all start, and how long do you think it may last?

Good day!! I recieved 1.50 inches of rain overnight into today. We had a family gathering at LaCygne Lake...we had an enclosed pavillion so it all worked out well. It was raining in the beginning but stopped shortly after arrival. The kids played in all the mud puddles, good thing I was smart enough to bring them all a change of cloths and shoes...LOLOL!! I do have a question....someone is coming to our home starting tomorrow to do major house work that is done from the outside, should we wait until Wednesday instead of tommorrow? It looks as if rain is a possiblity most of tomorrow. Thanks and have a great day.

And I have been up for a hour or two with the storms at night. Im in Southern Lee's Summit close to 1-50 highway and we barely get the worst of the storm.

I'm starting to think its me!  I just got back from northeast Colorado, where I had to deal with tornado warnings for 2 days (I passed through Greeley less than an hour before the big one went through that hit that area).  So today on I-70 I had a perfect view of the severe storms developing yet again.  All I could think of was "OK, what would Gary say to do if I see a tornado while in my car" LOL

I'm sick of severe weather too!!! Too much rain and wind this spring. Damage so far this year is: Tin on old barn roof blew off - replaced it, sidewall of shed came loose, back of old barn tin was ripped away, pastures are a flooded mess, new driveway gravel by new culvert washed away, and the latest is the basement window started leaking and got my finished basement carpet wet! Arggg.

Not too mention I was suppose to go on a week long trail ride near the Current River this week and had to cancel because of severe weather threats along with flash flooding. Can't get much riding in because mother nature will not turn off the faucet and don't get me started on Diesel prices.... that's a whole other story.

Sure looks like we are in for a rainy evening with the big weather complex headed our way. Maybe I can get a ride in on Thursday if I put flippers on the horses feet. Long sigh.....

I am moving, not soon enough though, have to weather this weather a few more years and then, never ever again!!!  The one and only reason I'm leaving these parts is the weather, it's horrible and has been for way too long.  It just never stops raining and as soon as we get a few days without rain people start worrying about a drought.....I am pretty sure the water tables are quite adequate at this point.  Our park is flooded, the river is out of it's banks and that's still leftover from all the snow this winter!  The ground has not been completely dry for one day this year, not one.  I truly long for the desert southwest and I can't wait to get there, born and raised in Kansas, but I can't wait to leave.

DPannell, people in the desert are always worrying about drought too. Aside from the monsoons in Sept and a few rare rains during the winter in January  that's it. That's why everyone has rock lawns, to save on water, at least in the front yard. My folks have it out back too around their big patio. Then there are the dust storms and some of the thunderstorms can pack quite a wollop. I've seen fences down and even some block walls damaged. My folks lost their roof from some straight line winds. I also saw my first funnel cloud in Phoenix and I have pics from the local paper showing some awesome wall clouds over the west valley about 3-4 years ago.

Every region has it's own weather to deal with. It gets hotter earlier every year and it really isn't fun at 115. And then you have to listen to the stupid comments about it being a "dry heat." When it gets that hot it is miserable, humidity or not.

If you can handle that, then you have to suffer through tons of sunny days, 70 degree winters, beautiful mountains, desert wildflowers, clear starry nights, spending alot of time outdoors during the 8 months it is not dangerously hot, and depneding on where in the southwest you go having to drive 2-7 hours to hit the beach. You also have to give up coats, boots, and gloves. It does hit freezing at night so you would have to have a heavy jacket.

It's a rough life, Gary finds the weather there boring. Yeah, I will be there eventually too and I'll look you up :)

Kristy,

This is so complex.  Some spots will get more than 2 inches, while others get less than 1/2 inch.  I didn't really mention amounts on the air, as this first MCS is just barely hitting the northern areas.

just a quickie, how long does it look like, we will be seeing this rain, into mid-morning tomorrow?

The rain is just struggling to get here at all.  The morning activity will be decided by a new comples forming over western Kansas.  We seem to be in the wrong spot the past few days for heavy rainfall.

Is it just me, or did that area of rain to our west just collapse!?! It kind of looked like it sucked the rain that has made its way into Douglas ans Johnson counties back into itself. Since that appears it will not give us any rain, is another complex expected to develop over western Kansas or was that it?

If storms over eastern Kansas can't make it here how are storms over western Kansas going to make it here?

I think we have seen most of our rain for the year until October. I think the rest of May, June, July, August, and most of September are going to be very dry.

kurt said:

Darn, I thought we were in for some really bigtime downpours.  Poof!  And how come there is redevelopment to the east?  How the heck does it come to the Missouri River fall apart and then reform east?

There are some spots in the area that could use more rain just to keep things well watered.  We don't have a problem with flooded anything up north of the river and south of St. Joseph.  Moisture is just right, but won't be if we don't get good rains.  I think we might be below normal for the month if these rains don't pan out.
May 27, 2008 12:19 AM

kurt said:

I stand corrected, the Weather Channel says we have had 5.98 for month to date and normal for the month is 4.95.  Althought I don't think we have had more than 4.5 in the rain gauge and most of that was the first week of May.  I just have this feeling that the window to get a surplus in the precipitation dept is closing and the next LRC that sets up could really be stinker.

Early this evening, I noticed that the gutters were clogged. So hubby and I went out to clean them. Yucko!

Yes the convection is being naughty!! just one strong complex to take aim on St. Joe, please, not severe weather, but heavy rain and lots of booming lighting, it seems to have been bouncing all around us, we miss really getting nailed BUT we sure enough seem to catch the middle of the "mesohigh" created by the complexes that have grazed us, which causes the others to kind of bounce around us, oh well it has never been a real dry pattern (excluding nov) so we will get some... eventually.

We were just west of Pratt,KS, when we saw a funnel cloud, and to us it did look like it briefly touched down, even the chasers we caught up with said that they thought it touched down briefly. Around 7:30pm or so, we caught up to Sean!!! We followed him to a applebees in Hutchison,KS.

I had a blast, and I'll look at the video later in the morning, but We do think we saw our first Tornado!!

May 4, 2003, I was living in Monett, MO.... about 6 miles due east of Pierce City... the town that was destroyed by an F3 tornado.  The tornado missed my house by about 600 yards to the south.  I got some amazing pictures as it went by.  (Got "Photo of the Month" on the Weather Channel).  Sadly, however 2 people died in the trailer park that sat directly behind my land (I lived on 10 acres).  The intensity of those few minutes will be hard to match in the future.  It was so amazing to watch... yet so painful to know it took lives with it.
