NBC Action Weather Blog

Severe weather risk tonight and Friday

Good late evening bloggers,

The radar image, below, shows a tornadic supercell west of Concordia, KS.  It is very impressive, and Kansas has just passed Missouri and is now the #1 state for tornadoes so far this year.

These thunderstorms will organize and move across extreme northwest Missouri overnight.  Our viewing area won't be affected until after midnight, and the main threat will become damaging winds.  Outflow from this complex will likely make it close to Kansas City by morning with the potential for some early morning thunderstorms.  Then, there is a slight risk of severe weather as a cold front approaches Friday night.

We will be tracking these developments on NBC Action News.  Have a great night.  Sean Wilson, has seen videotaped, and experienced tornadoes today.  We will try to show some of his chase on Friday.

Gary

Thanks Gary. Looking forward to seeing Sean's video's. We were all glued to the various chase video's tonight.

Not only are the storms amazing but I'm floored that non-chase crew people are out driving around in a storm of this magnitude.  Did they not hear about the people down here killed while in their vehicles 2 1/2 weeks ago? Crazy!

Are Sean's chase videos the ones from KS or the ones from IA?

gary, do you think Moberly, MO. will be in a very threatening area tomorrow? We have a big sale tomorrow.

There is a chance, but we just have to see how it sets up in the morning.

I heard Sean was in Kearney, NE and had to take cover in a building that was hit today.  Maybe that will be the video we see. scary!

I need sympathy--here it is all warm and muggy--and our compressor is out on our air conditioner here at the house! UGH, sleeping in a muggy house. Glad at least for the whole house fan.

Thanks for your kind words in the earlier blogs everyone!!  The best conversation I had tonight was with my aunt in Mapleton, IA and hearing her scanners go off with all the warnings and damage reports.  She said the rain looked like a blizzard at times because it was mixed with slushy hail and coming "down" sideways!  All family in Nebraska is hunky dory and staying with friends or at their own homes.  All is well!!!!  :)

Our compressor is out also! I feel so bad for my daughter having to be in the hot/humid house. Can't wait for service tomorrow. Can they fix a compressor or do you need a whole new unit? I am ready for Winter!!!! Summer hasn't even started and I am so sick of the humid hot sunny weather... yuck!

Yeah, let's get back to winter and spending $200 per month heating the house. Sounds great.

Hello, I know the Tornado Watch lasts untill 2am just north of here but I was wondering if there is any chance that we (Clay County area) are put under a watch (either a Tornado Watch or Severe Thunderstorm Watch) later on tonight or early tomorrow morning?

Thank You

Chieffan07, I asked the same question earlier.  Gary said there is a possibility, but the storms show no signs of coming this way at this time.

I know up here in Excelsior S prings the humidity has increased a bit and it is just hard to breathe out there! Sending good thoughts to you all north of here. Stay safe tonight and make sure those weather radios are on.

If you don't have a weather radio I strongly reccomend investing in one.

Simplykristi, you think these guys are not busy?  The team here does a fairly good job of keeping on top of things and answering questions.  Part of the problem is us.  There are so many posts here, it really takes a lot of time to go through all of the posts.  It's not easy to answer every one, but the team really does try.  Unfortunately, the blog is just one of the frills that most people around the country don't have the luxury of having.

I think a cool idea would be a nice chat feature.  Mets can join if they want to, but it would be really neat for the rest of us bloggers.  Kinda like what Scott has on his site, but one that auto updates. :)  I get a lot of great information from the people here.

Also, I don't know if this means much, but my gut is kinda wigging out about tomorrow.  Nothing too bad yet. :)  Hopefully the weather is that way.  Nothing too bad!

Well to stay up and see if these will roll in, or to go to sleep and try to get up early to see if the storms will still be around tomorrow morning, all of these thunderstorms around and I just want to sit back and watch a good heavy, loud, crashing thunderboomer, I will be upset if we get one and I am sleeping and the next round tomorrow misses us.  So Kansas is now number one...  you know the weather is crazy when it starts to sound like sports!!!LOL

I just talked with my parents who live just a bit south of Jewell and north on Beloit on HWY 14.  They spent quite a few hours going up/down from the basement as the sirens were going off last night.  They said 3 tornadoes were spotted in their area, at least.  There are many telephone poles down and the water tower was toppled.  I'm sure more damage will be revealed with the light of day.  It is a very rural area, thank heavens for that, but an already hard hit area this season.  I'm so thankful my parents (in their 70s) are doing okay.
The  thing I love about this season is the heat and even the humidity, I don't mind it at all.  Of course I wish it was drier but I'll take 90s any day, even 100 would be welcomed after the horrible winter we had.  Let's pray that this storm season comes to a close soon the devastation has been heartbreaking.
