Radar echoes are showing up...1:45 PM

Good afternoon bloggers,

A line of weak showers has just developed from near Platte City and north of the Missouri River to eastern Missouri.  They are weak, but they should intensify into thunderstorms soon.

I just watched Sean Wilson's tornado video, or some of it.  He literally was inside the tornado, fortunately it wasn't any stronger.  We will be showing some of it tonight on NBC Action News.  I will try to show some extra stuff at 10 PM.  Of course this depends on what happens today.

The main threat continues to be large hail today.  The weak cold front, at 2 PM, extended from near Manhattan Kansas to near Falls City, NE.  This is moving slowly southward and thunderstorms will be forming along and south of the front.

Forecast sounding is picking up on a 800mb windshift at 21Z..from the WSW to NW and the cap builds a bit...wonder if the sounding are picking up on a outflow boundary from what is building to our NW?

Surface winds still out of the WSW then..so something is going on...

Thoughts?

I'm not seeing anything forming really on radar to the west at all, but MCIRamp is right - the clouds east of KCI are beautiful!  To the blog experts...what is your take as I have double headers at the ball park tonight with 10/11 year olds.  :)

For all of you in the metro area, here's what I expect...  We are on the western side of the watch.  We will get the beginning of any storms that develop.  Storms could fire just to our west and over us.  If we get any tornadoes here, they would be quick spin up, IMO.  Our main threat in the metro area is wind and hail.

For those of you to the east, like around Holden and Warrensburg and Knob Knoster, you might see a little action.  The worst of it should be to your east tho.  For twister, he is on the edge of the moderate risk.  He is in Moberly.  If you live east of Moberly, you need to pay real close attention.

Let's just chill and watch the weather together. :)  If you get a warning, just tell us that you are seeking shelter and come back and let us know you are OK once the threat has passed you.  Remember we watch out for each other. :)

Use common sense. :)

It was asked above, why not Douglas County?

I think as Douglas is in the Topeka WFO, they are playing it by ear a bit....waiting to see the initiation further to the west first.

Right now, cells are firing along the quasi stationary front or reminents of the outflow from last night.  Later, we will see them fire along the cold front to the NW.

If you are so inclined, go to the SPC page, go to the mesoanalysis, and check out the loop of the 0-3 MLCAPE/surface vorticity composite and loop it.  Also check out the MUCAPE/effective sheer composite.

Between these two, I think where the SPC put the watch is about perfect.

I wouldn't be suprised to see Topeka get in on the fun when the line initiates...

Scott, the individual forecast offices do not issue the watches, so I don't think that has anything to do with Douglas County not being in the watch.

But if you look at the current forecast, there is only a 20% chance of any precip at all for Douglas County. That is why they are not in the watch; they are probably not even going to get a shower, let alone a severe storm.

50knot toward, 50 knot away winds in the storm near Paris, MO, just east of Moberly.  I am not trying to frighten people, I just think that people need to monitor this storm because NEXRAD is suggesting at least a small amount of rotation. The worst thing to do is panic, but just keep an eye out there. 30 knot to 30 knot very close Carrolton, so I would monitor that one as well.

I'm new to watching the "live" chase cams, is it normal to see the same bit of footage over & over again?

I'm watching Chris' & even with hitting refresh often I've seen him come up over those railroad tracks for & stop for that car for the past 2 minutes.

Didn't know if that was usual, if they pause their cameras or not.  I can tell I'll get addicted to watching these chase cams!

RDub, no the local offices do not issue the watches, but they influence heavily where they are issued. The NWS offices and the SPC confer before issuing watches. Ever notice when the watches seem to fallow the CWA for certain offices, even taking weird turns? If TOP did not want Douglas in the watch, it wouldn't be.

The reason that Leavenworth county appears to  be split is because you are looking at the polygon watch box. That is just an approximation of the actual watch area. Leavenworth county is completely included. Here is the link: http://www.spc.noaa.gov/products/watch/wou0395.html

It's a "poof" thing unless you blog from the east side of Missouri like Moberly.
Expect a good chance for severe weather in KC next Thursday, if not late Wednesday night.
If you live on a raft on the MO River or own land beside it...be warned the River will have the first of many crests on Tuesday below flood level, but close (in KC)  expect that trend to continue through mid to late July.
